Berigan, Manny will almost certainly get a ring from the Sox if the Red Sox get there. It's conceivable he will get both a winners and a losers share if both teams get in. It has been quite awhile and all the personnel has changed (except maybe Wakefield) but as I recall the Red Sox pitchers in the 90's handled Manny pretty well. What I wonder is if both Sox and Dodgers get to the series, how many times will Sox pitchers put it on his hip.

Obscure, In Print Gems In Your Collection

Simone Guiducci's Django's Jungle on the Splasc(h) label. I was sold by a review in Cadence and bought the disc some years ago. Italian guitarist with several European musicians and Americans Chris Speed and Kyle Gregory. There's a review at Allaboutjazz but no listing for this date on Allmusic. Maybe this isn't obscure in Italy but I think everything on the Spasc(h) label is obscure. -
The growth of Jon Lester is very impressive. Last year he likely wouldn't have gone back for the 7th (or even the 6th) but he has stopped nibbling. I thought there was a chance that Tito wouldn't let him come out for the 7th due to pitch count which would have driven me up a wall. I agree the commentators were not bad last night, they get points right off the baT for not being Joe Morgan or Tim McCarver. The talk here in New England on sports talk radio is that Beckett is still iffy for Sunday. On another matter, I was just watching ESPN and a commentator, Rob Parker, made reference to Boston running Manny Ramirez out of town. How can someone accept a paycheck for commenting on sports and have such a wrong headed notion. I will never believe anything else this guy says, ever.

I know people jump on new comers who post with stuff to sell as their 1st post. However, at least this guy has reasonably interesting stuff, reasonably priced and seemingly described and graded appropriately. For the record I don't know and have no connection with the seller. Personally, I'd have a problem with the guy if he misrepresented his stuff or if every piece was graded NM.

I was looking at Seamus Blake releases at Amazon yesterday and came across this new release w/Blake, Sam Yahel, Ari Hoenig and others. Seems like an inspired marketing decision anyway. Has anyone here heard it and care to comment?

Man, I hate it when I confuse my Alomars.

Belle had better stats but his supporting cast looks like a Fantasy Team now. He had Carlos Baerga (.314, 90 RBI), Jim Thome (.314, 73 RBI), Kenny Lofton (.310), some guy named Ramirez who batted 7th I believe (.308, 107 RBI), and Eddy Murray (.323, 82 RBI). The Sox had Tim Naehring, Jose Canseco and Troy O'Leary just over .300 but O'Leary and Canseco didn't crack 400 at bats, Mike Greenwell and John Valentin were also very close to .300. Still, that Cleveland lineup was historic, and that's with Sandy Alomar (maybe the best 2nd baseman ever) playing only 66 games. So, while I can see your argument that writers didn't want to vote for the "bad guy", I think an argument could be made that Vaughn was more important to the Sox lineup than Belle was to the Indians. Mind you I'm not saying its a no brainer.

Not to incite Thom on Tom violence, but, I don't see how Albert Belle v. Mo Vaughn supports the "Most Valuable Player" with "Greatest Offensive Season" confusion. Belle had better stats than Vaughn in every major offensive category except stolen bases (Vaughn had 11, those runnin' Red Sox!) and RBI, which was tied at 126. But Vaughn won the award. I do agree about Youk taking some votes from Pedroia, specially if Youk has a big September. Now rooting for the Yankees (hurts to say that).

Cadence Magazine
Tom in RI replied to JohnS's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I have been a loyal Cadence subscriber since the mid '80's. I like the new format (its like a paperback book now Dan). One gripe I have is that they insert pictures of musicians who are mentioned in the text but never on the same page. It could be my imagination but I see fewer dismissive reviews which makes me wonder. Also, I miss the center section sale, even if it was tough on the eyes. Cadence is the only magazine I continue to have a subscription to. -
I missed this thread each other time it has been up, look forward to hearing Mr. Galliano. Another accordion player I've heard to good effect is Sonny Barbato as a sideman on George Schuller's Round About Now on Playscape. Barbato is only on one or two cuts as I recall.

Evidently Yaz had triple bypass. He and I share a birthday (this Friday).

Its a case of Upton being Manny. Hey Dan, if the Sox make a play for Texeira in the off season can you see any way they can keep him and Youkillis and Lowell? Personally, I think we coming up on Youk's best 3-4 seasons and I really want to keep him around for his hitting and versatility.
-
I'd be real surprised if the Sox made a serious pitch for Sabathia. They have 3 guys at the front end now who are all under their control for at least 2-3 years. If they look for starting pitching outside of their system it would be for an end of rotation guy.

I was a little surprised that the Rays didn't make a deal before the trading deadline. From what I read and hear they have one of the best collections of prospects in baseball. There's no way they could have anticipated the injuries they have. OTOH, you have to plan for surprises and get a little extra if you think you are close. I'm glad to see the Bosox on a little run post-Manny. Still, I have to believe that the Twins will be breathing down their necks for the wild card if the Sox can't overtake Tampa.

Additionally, it appears Carter may be injured as he hasn't played since August 7th, Joe Thurston, who has also had a very good year in triple A, has assumed left field in the meantime.
-
Thom, I have seen Chris Carter several times this year in Pawtucket. He has had a pretty good season offensively but he is not a major league 1st baseman, hasn't looked to good in left field either.

What's your favorite Stanley Turrentine session?

For a later date try More Than a Mood on Musicmasters, a quartet date from 1992 with Cedar Walton, Ron Carter and Billy Higgins. Freddie Hubbard sits in on a couple of cuts also. -
Anyone have a copy of this cd they are willing to part with? Thanks.

Advice Sought on Disposing of Recordings
Tom in RI replied to Mystery's topic in Miscellaneous Music
One avenue I haven't seen mentioned is selling to Cadence. I have had no problem selling common cd's to them for what I felt was a fair price. I have sent cds through the mail and gotten credit for future purchases. I don't know how much they would reduce the rate for cash. They will let you know they don't want compilations and any other parameters. They might travel for a collection of your size, I don't know. In any event, I think it would make sense to list the more collectible stuff yourself or look for someone already running lots of auctions and work out a split. -
For awhile my local used record dealer sold a unite made of two round pieces of plexiglass with rubber beads on the edge and a clamp that ran through a hole in the middle. This was to put over record labels while cleaning with water so as not to get the label wet. Pretty low tech but I am told it worked petty well. I don't know if he still sells them.

A couple other sideman dates for Coleman that really stand out for me are Hilton Ruiz, A Moment's Notice and Mario Rivera, El Commandante (that one may be a little hard to find).
