  1. In the words of Andy Kaufman, tank you vedy much!
  2. Hi David, yes I mentioned the smaller cd's, Phillips made a device just for them called the Philips Pocket Expanium Mini Disc Player.
  3. I recently picked up a Philips Pocket Expanium Mini Disc Player. It uses the smaller sized cdr's (3 inch) and can play mp3's (up to 3 hours depending on compression) and PCM (only 21 minutes). This is different from minidiscs, a format that had great potential but was suffocated by Sony and their obsession with DRM. I have several minidisc players which I still use (most models can be found pretty cheap on ebay).
  4. Dan, is it the Texas Rangers you are worried about? While I think a division title is still an attainable goal for the Bosox, I can't see them not getting in as a wild card if they don't get the division (whoa, too many negatives). I thought this kind of negativity died after 2004, 2007. Or is this just the mark of a longtime fan who can't forget 67, 75, 78, 86 ect. (I've gotten over it myself).

    Tiny Grimes

Like Big Beat Steve I like his RnB sides from the late 40's. Another date he is on that I like is the Coleman Hawkins record, Blues Groove on Swingville. Not sure what its current status is but I would imagine it has been reissued in some by Prestige and is probably available cheap somewhere. Edit: I see the post above mine notes that Blue Groove is now out under Tiny Grimes name, the lp issue I have has Coleman Haqwkins as the leader.
  6. Regarding LaRoche v. Kochman it was noted somewhere today that LaRoche is more of a free swinger and Kochman is more in line with the organizational approach of grinding at bats and generating a better OBP. I should think the Martinez trade will be good for Masterson since starters make more money than relievers, still Masterson needs to develop a better approach to left handers. From what I hear and read Victor Martinez is not a long term solution at catcher. Tito will have his hands full getting everyone playing time. Still, the Yankees are not going to keep up their current pace. I believe the Sox are in good position to get to the post season.
  7. Joshua Breakstone did a cd of Monk tunes for guitar trio called Let's Call This Monk! on Double-Time Records which is pretty good. He tackles some of what I imagine are some of the less generally covered Monk tunes such as Brilliant Corners, Eronel, Humph, Work, and Let's Call This among others.
  8. If Allmusic can be believed, Pat Martino appears on 8 different Willis Jackson releases. I have some of them, Martino is credited as Pat Azzara on the original pressing of Jackson's Action.
  9. If you are in Providence you must check out Round Again Records on Wickenden St., the last man standing for RI record stores. Still manages to keep a decent selection of jazz and at quite reasonable prices. They have been at it since 1980 and still doing the job. Especially appreciated, not every rare item gets the Ebay treatment. Like all good record stores, you need to be a regular to get the good stuff, not because he's holding records for regulars but because Steve prices stuff to sell.
  10. I am an Adams Pullen fanatic. Glad to say also that I got to see them 3 times, 2 at the 1369 Jazz Club in Inman Square (is that Cambridge?) and once at a noon time concert in Providence. Favorite studio recording for me would be Life Line on Timeless. Also, from one of the Palcoscenico lp's is a stunning version of God Bless the Child, a big favorite. I don't think any of the studio recordings approach the level of excitement generated at the live performances I saw (excepting the mid day concert held at a building in Providence with terrible boomy sound, I have some pictures I'll try and post later). With the advent of file sharing there are quite a few broadcast performances of this group available in pretty good sound, even a video or two. I was poking through Brian Priestley's Mingus biography the other day and was checking out the discography. Has there ever been any talk of issuing the rest of the Carnegie Hall date from the early 70's where Rahsaan Roland Kirk guests?
  11. Hey Cary, it's on the Skipstone label. When I picked it up I really wasn't sure what to expect But I am happy to say it maintained my attention for all 49:09. So, do you miss RI?
  12. This is the 1st recording by Erik Friedlander as a leader that I have heard. It's cello, bass and drums. A quirky setup but the music is very accessible and swings and grooves. His website has some more coherent reviews than I can give and I think there are some samples also. Liked it so much I am now ordering a couple of things from Friedlander's previous efforts.
  13. I ended up with two copies. The disc is open but minty fresh in every aspect, $8 including shipping to a US address.
  14. Tyner sold to the man with the voracious musical appetite from King of Prussia!
  15. McCoy Tyner - Guitars - cd+dvd, $7.50 SOLD Pony Poindexter & Rene Thomas Quintet at the Blue Note, Gambit Records, $6.50 SOLD $1.50 for shipping in US, actual cost for international. Thanks for looking. Now I have to figure out how to delete this thread....
  16. Little Lee, I agree, these are some of my favorite Paul Motian releases. There is at least one good sounding fm performance that also circulates.
  17. A Riddle Song Fred Hersch Trio + 2
  18. I referenced Blue Chopsticks in one of the 1st responses in this thread, a good date. Yes, it is a memorably awkward cover.

    Charles Davis

Davis plays well alongside Clifford Jordan on Dizzy Reese's date on Beehive Records. Has anyone heard this? http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1931
  20. Since I ordered this last year I moved my office. I just received a notice from UPS about a package they couldn't deliver because of the address change. I picked it up the package this afternoon and there it was, I had forgotten about it. Ended up being 25 and change with shipping.
  21. Count me guilty also, maybe I just haven't heard the right Armstrong recordings.
  22. Hoyt, you didn't care for the Study in Frustration box?
  23. I suggested a George Adams Don Pullen set in the mid 80's and I remember being told by Michael Cuscuna (well, it may have been Charlie Lourie) that they were a better band live, that their recorded material to date didn't really do them justice. This was before most of the titles on Blue Note had been made. I knew there were some titles out I hadn't heard (Horo, Palcoscenico, possibly some dates released in Japan). Having acquired the Horos and the Palcoscenicos subsequently I do see they would make a pretty uneven set. Really I can't argue that they were a band best experienced live. I also suggested Serge Chaloff but I am sure I wasn't alone there. I think they got a lot of calls for that set.
  24. Love the Buellgrass dates, particularly Big Day at Ojai. That's the stuff. Also some love for Blue Chopsticks, Buell's take on Herbie Nichols and featuring the fabulous Richard Greene.
  25. You might like this Okeh compilation which I have had since it came out: http://www.amazon.com/OKeh-Rhythm-Blues-St...3049&sr=1-1 In the same vein is the Fire and Fury Records Story: http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Records-Story-V...3245&sr=1-2
