  1. I am an Adams Pullen fanatic. Glad to say also that I got to see them 3 times, 2 at the 1369 Jazz Club in Inman Square (is that Cambridge?) and once at a noon time concert in Providence. Favorite studio recording for me would be Life Line on Timeless. Also, from one of the Palcoscenico lp's is a stunning version of God Bless the Child, a big favorite. I don't think any of the studio recordings approach the level of excitement generated at the live performances I saw (excepting the mid day concert held at a building in Providence with terrible boomy sound, I have some pictures I'll try and post later). With the advent of file sharing there are quite a few broadcast performances of this group available in pretty good sound, even a video or two. I was poking through Brian Priestley's Mingus biography the other day and was checking out the discography. Has there ever been any talk of issuing the rest of the Carnegie Hall date from the early 70's where Rahsaan Roland Kirk guests?
  2. Hey Cary, it's on the Skipstone label. When I picked it up I really wasn't sure what to expect But I am happy to say it maintained my attention for all 49:09. So, do you miss RI?
  3. This is the 1st recording by Erik Friedlander as a leader that I have heard. It's cello, bass and drums. A quirky setup but the music is very accessible and swings and grooves. His website has some more coherent reviews than I can give and I think there are some samples also. Liked it so much I am now ordering a couple of things from Friedlander's previous efforts.
  4. I ended up with two copies. The disc is open but minty fresh in every aspect, $8 including shipping to a US address.
  5. Tyner sold to the man with the voracious musical appetite from King of Prussia!
  6. McCoy Tyner - Guitars - cd+dvd, $7.50 SOLD Pony Poindexter & Rene Thomas Quintet at the Blue Note, Gambit Records, $6.50 SOLD $1.50 for shipping in US, actual cost for international. Thanks for looking. Now I have to figure out how to delete this thread....
  7. Little Lee, I agree, these are some of my favorite Paul Motian releases. There is at least one good sounding fm performance that also circulates.
  8. A Riddle Song Fred Hersch Trio + 2
  9. I referenced Blue Chopsticks in one of the 1st responses in this thread, a good date. Yes, it is a memorably awkward cover.

    Charles Davis

Davis plays well alongside Clifford Jordan on Dizzy Reese's date on Beehive Records. Has anyone heard this? http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1931
  11. Since I ordered this last year I moved my office. I just received a notice from UPS about a package they couldn't deliver because of the address change. I picked it up the package this afternoon and there it was, I had forgotten about it. Ended up being 25 and change with shipping.
  12. Count me guilty also, maybe I just haven't heard the right Armstrong recordings.
  13. Hoyt, you didn't care for the Study in Frustration box?
  14. I suggested a George Adams Don Pullen set in the mid 80's and I remember being told by Michael Cuscuna (well, it may have been Charlie Lourie) that they were a better band live, that their recorded material to date didn't really do them justice. This was before most of the titles on Blue Note had been made. I knew there were some titles out I hadn't heard (Horo, Palcoscenico, possibly some dates released in Japan). Having acquired the Horos and the Palcoscenicos subsequently I do see they would make a pretty uneven set. Really I can't argue that they were a band best experienced live. I also suggested Serge Chaloff but I am sure I wasn't alone there. I think they got a lot of calls for that set.
  15. Love the Buellgrass dates, particularly Big Day at Ojai. That's the stuff. Also some love for Blue Chopsticks, Buell's take on Herbie Nichols and featuring the fabulous Richard Greene.
  16. You might like this Okeh compilation which I have had since it came out: http://www.amazon.com/OKeh-Rhythm-Blues-St...3049&sr=1-1 In the same vein is the Fire and Fury Records Story: http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Records-Story-V...3245&sr=1-2
  17. Chewy fell asleep in mid post.
  18. Thanks all for the feedback. I did pick up the 4 volumes of DB Record Reviews and also ended up with Hendersonia although I will be passing that along to a friend. Now, where can I find volumes 1-4....
  19. I ran across 4 volumes of Down Beat's Record Reviews yesterday, volumes V - VIII (1961-1964). I am not finding much info in a short online search other than that there is a Volume V available at Amazon for $50. Does $50/volume seem reasonable or can these be typically found for less? In the same stack I saw a copy of Hendersonia, does anyone know if that book was issued with a dust jacket (there isn't one on the book)? Thanks.
  20. Dan, I'd love to see RI native Rocco Baldelli with the Red Sox, but, while I think he'd be fine as a 4th out fielder, he clearly couldn't step in on an everyday basis when (not if) JD Drew needs a few weeks off. Then they would have to bring someone up or get a body in trade. As far as Coco Crisp, he never lived up to the promise but he really wasn't cut out for leadoff either. I will say that of all the Sox outfielders I've seen since the 60's he was the most breath taking, although he has no arm. Can John Farrell help Dontrelle Willis if the Tigers trade him for Lugo?
  21. Just picked up a copy of SF Jazz Collective Live 2006, the two disc limited edition for 7.99.
  22. There is a Benny Carter date on Modern from May 1949 that has dubbed in applause. I have it on an lp on the Official label. Curiously, the 4 tunes, Cottontail, Time Out for The Blues, Surf Board, and You Are Too Beautiful, feature Ben Webster, no Carter solos. The applause is annoying in the extreme particularly on Cottontail. Anyone know if these tunes were ever issued without the faux audience?
  23. I hate Manute Bol, too tall. Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar and Danny Kortchmar were James Taylor's frequent studio guys, they recorded several lps in the 1970's as The Section. I think Kunkel and Sklar in particular did a crapload of session work in Los Angeles.
  24. I just today listened to a guitarist new to me playing in a classic jazz style, Greg Chako. His story is fascinating and, at points, tragic. He's had long spells away from music due to carpal tunnel syndrome. He currently lives, as far as I can tell, in Japan, where he moved with his wife. Shortly after relocating from Singapore to Japan his wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The cd, Everyone's Got a Name, is his 6th or 7th. I thought the playing was very strong and engaging. His website, gregchako.com has lots of sound clips and lots of information on his personal story.
  25. Going by allmusic (not always the last word, I know) I don't think there has been a straight reissue of this record. I think it is available in pieces on cd.
