  1. Would this include Richard III's bones??
  2. That was wonderful Lon .... thanks for sharing that.
  3. Yes, the sound is on the bootleggy side - the liner notes say that there are "instances of distortion" I believe that is the phrase and it is an understatement. So like the Mingus Mosaic box the distortion is back, but the music is marvelous. SInce most of Disc 1 of Bootleg #2 was out before in the Japanese only cd (mispelled "Festiva Juan Pins") which I have, I plan to compare the sound to the new box. Has anyone done that?
  4. got mine with all discs included and good shape. Yes the liner notes are on the back of the poster - which I suppose is a dilemma if you want to put the poster up on your wall - but they are extensive, informative and unlike Bootleg #1 - they fit into the sleeve of the box (if that is the right way to say it?) so there is no problem about separation like there was with #1 ... now where is that damn booklet for #1.....
  5. Great remembrance Pete!
  6. I saw several musical events that he was involved in, but I also had a very pleasant nonmusical encounter with him about 10 years ago. I was entering a restaurant on the lower east side of Manhattan with my wife and young son and my eyes spied Butch at another table. It was clear to him that I knew who he was. Later he stopped by our table and said "I just wanted to tell you three what a beautiful family you are" - my mouth literally dropped open - I have never heard nicer words from a stranger in my entire life.
  7. Not sure why I bother to pre-order at Amazon US. I am still in "shipping soon" mode when J&R has it for the same price right now and it's just two blocks from me.
  8. Do you guys with acoustics do anything to humidify the guitars? Tell me what you use and your experiences. Thanks
  9. Thanks Lon
  10. I recently found a set of guitar strings (steel) for my acoustic which I had misplaced for 5 years. Can strings get too old in the package?
  11. The answer to that question is in the marvelous new film by Michael Apted entitled "56 Up"
  12. well I was there about 30 years ago and took in a lot of music, sightseeing, and food which others here are more up to date on. One thing that perhaps no one has mentioned are some of the easy day trips from NO - one we did was Oak Alley Plantation which is a beautiful place and the ride out there and back gave me some sense of the area around NO - not everyone's cup of tea but I rather enjoyed it.
  13. I think that the Allman Brothers could play and compose as well as Zep and I much preferred them. Opinion and reality rarely intersect. SO your statement above that "NO American rock band could touch them [Zep] with a ten foot pole" - is that reality or your opinion?
  14. I think that the Allman Brothers could play and compose as well as Zep and I much preferred them.
  15. My understanding of how this works at the Kennedy Center is that the Artist being honored is typically paid tribute by others influenced by him or her and generally they seem to be of a younger generation than the honoree. Given that Beck is rather more of a contemporary of Zep's and arguably as much as or more of an influence on Page than the other way around, then it would not make sense for Beck to be honoring Zep. That would be kind of like McCartney honoring Badfinger!
  16. Anyone see the show last night? I really enjoyed the Buddy Guy tribute and thought that Jeff Beck and a woman singer (Beth Hart?) blew the doors off the place and while I like Bonnie Raitt I would have hated to follow Beck and Hart as she did. The Zeppelin tribute was nice too and most shocking of all I even enjoyed Stairway to Heaven (a song I didn't much care for at the time) done by of all folks the girl duo band Heart... i was prepared to dislike it but I didn't. You could see Plant tearing up. Wonderful tributes also to Dustin Hoffman and David Letterman.
  17. I just love the stop-start way the group does the head to Peggy's Blue Skylight on Disc 7 - just brings out the beauty of this melody!!!
  18. Happy Birthday SS1 and remember Cleveland rocks!!
  19. All the best to you and your family!
  20. best wishes
  21. I hear Mingus's comment before Bird Preamble and then the subsquent performance as Mingus saying to the Avant-garde "I can do what you guys do, but you guys can't do what I can do."
  22. Interesting comments from everyone. And didn't you think the "Bird Preamble" was influenced by and sounded a bit like Ornette at times?
  23. what did you guys think about Mingus taking a swipe at the Avant garde in his stage announcement before "Bird Preamble" on Disc 7, then launching into a Parker medley that at times sounded like Bird Meets Ornette? Interesting from a guy who employed Eric Dolphy.
  24. the loss of a true giant and who opened up the world of Indian music to us.
  25. Mingus Jazz Workshop Concerts 64-65 - Discs 6 and 7. Wonderful music.
