I recently picked up Hot House and think it is very strong. Wonderful selection of tunes and good performances. I always liked Crystal Silence... so I was inclined.

I was at a Gap clothing store at lunch... the store was playing this cd and selling the T shirt.

Thanks Lon.... I keep forgetting that.

Thanks Sidewinder, JSngry, felser.... I guess I am going to purchase Knucklebean

FS: Take Five: The Public and Private Lives of Paul Desmond
skeith replied to skeith's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Price reduced to $55 delivered to a US address. This book is a large "coffee table" style book with lots of large pictures and about a dozen transcriptions of Desmond's most famous solos with analysis by noted sax players. The list price on the book is $45 and I believe it is out of print. -
I have Blues Is King and like it very much...but don't think it matches Live at the Regal. As you say, one problem on Blues Is King is the sound quality and IIRC the audience is much more participatory on Live at the Regal (check out the climactic moment on "How Blue Can You Get" .... I get goose bumps/ cold chills up and down my spine every time.

THanks Lon and JAW!

Does anyone know much about Hutcherson's "Knucklebean" cd?

This would be myl first recommendation for an electric blues album to anyone just getting into the blues. This one has never been surpassed.
-
A lot of the Capitol and Imperial sides of T-Bone are included in a 2 cd best of on Rockbeat Records for a good price and excellent sound which I pointed out in a thread here on Recommendations some time ago. No electric blues collection would be complete without B.B. King and Muddy Waters - stick to the earlier stuff

This post is still here. The moderator must be making a cofee. Wynton is using too. Freelancer, Brad's past use of heroin - apparently he no longer does it - is no secret to anyone who has even a minimal familiarity with the guy. He has talked about it in interviews. I was being flip about him denying what many perceive as a definite Bill Evans influence on his music and I was making a silly aside about the influence on his personal life. Sorry if I offended you or any of his fans.
-
If Evans isn't an influence on the Bradster, then why is the Bradster doin' heroin? Just askin'

thanks guys... wow that is really unfortunate... the look is very cheap.

I have not purchased an OJC cd in a while, but did so yesterday to replace a damaged "The Kicker" by Joe Henderson. I was surprised after opening the jewel box to see the disc.... rather than the usual dark yellow printed on a mirror-like background... I was surprised to see a rather cheap looking gaudy bright yellow printed on a white background....looking much like a cdr. To be clear... I am talking about the disc, not the booklet. I bought this in the store at J&R.... but it looked fake.... is that what OJCs look like now?
-
Got it now, thanks!!!

for those who shop Academy in NYC, they have two copies of this box, one in the front window $25.96 and one in the glass case inside for $35, both appear to be sealed copies.

I think reverb was added in the mastering of the Japanese cd. And it muddies things up for me, and makes bass and drums sound thicker, slower, maybe "pretiier," but not "prettier" to me on my system. The new one is a definite upgrade for me. Lon, I ultimately have to agree with you that I prefer the Bootleg box, but not sure what you are saying in the second sentence... unless it's just that I can't spell ... which I can be guilty of. Lon, I think I get it now, you were not trying to reference any mispelling on my part, but I assume you accidentally spelled prettier differently?

Who said Bill Evans couldn't play the Blues?
skeith replied to skeith's topic in Miscellaneous Music
BillF I listened to my copy of that disc last night and you are correct, those are two great blues tracks by Evans... I would even say those tracks are more adventurous in terms of the notes he plays, whereas Bass Face just swings harder. -

Dan He certainly does on this track!!! -
I guess they haven't heard the tune "Bass Face" on the album "Quintessence" - a blues, with blues licks and the solo swings like crazy.... look out Wynton Kelly!!!
-
When I did my comparison to the Japanese single disc, I definitely hear the greater clarity that Lon refers to on the new Bootleg 2 box. On the other hand, I felt that the bass and drums were louder/higher up in the mix on the Japanese version and that the tone of the bass more prettier on the Japanese - that may reflect the "drier" sound on the Bootleg 2 box that ShowsOn refers to. My two cents.

I really love the version of Nefertiti on Disc 3 which starts with a lovely piano intro by Chick and then just gets better...this is perhaps the one of a few versions where they actually take solos on the tune... which they did not do on the original studio version IIRC.

Watched the DVD last night and loved it ...no distortion whatsoever... the venue is a bit weird though ... the band seems to be at the bottom of a pit.... Also listened to disc 3 the stockholm concert... appears to have the best sound of the cds and while I was apprehensive that Corea's switch to acoustic piano was going to sound wrong for that material ... it was great to hear him on acoustic piano and gave a whole different dimension to those tunes and that band.... not better just different.
