  1. Just heard this sad news. No other info so far.
  2. RIP James. He was a very nice man.
  3. Awful news! Nothing to say but to hope and pray for the best.
  4. The MP3s at 256 aren't too bad but I DO prefer cds or(gasp!) vinyl. What I find myself doing a lot of is buying or downloading MP3s of things that I already have on lp. Just to save the time of burning it to cd and separating the tracks etc etc. I've found quite a few items on Amazon at a price low enough for me to say "Hey - for a few bucks I don't have to spend over an hour going through that rigamarole." What really bugs me is the lack of documentation on this stuff. No notes - no personnel listing. How difficult would it be to attach an pdf with liner notes, etc? One example - Amazon actually has the Dixiecats session that was on Roulette available but with no personnel listed. there is just an album called "Dixiecats" with the standard repertoire dixieland tunes. Who are the players? Red Allen, Willie "The Lion", Buster Bailey, Zutty, Milt Hinton, Tyree Glenn and Boomie Richman. Don't you think listing the players might sell more albums? That's just one example - there are a lot more. Usually I recognize them from the tune configurations.
  5. RIP Leslie - he always made me laugh. I remember seeing him on some late night talk shows and he always seemed like a wacky (in the positive sense)character to me. Going way back - and I may be mistaken here - but was he Mr. Sands on the Ann Southern show?
  6. Is this available? Edit: I just check out amazon and ordered it. I know I'll dig this!
  7. My sincere condolences. I'm so sorry to hear this news. My sympathies and prayers are with you.
  8. I'm with Lon on this. That's pretty much exactly as I have them. If I don't count my vinyl, which is great soundwise but not in any sort of chronological or discographical configuration at all. Capitol Stampede is a gas! Also on vinyl is an Italian Giants of Jazz lp (I like their vinyl and despise their cds) called simply "Coleman Hawkins". It's a great overview of Hawk. I think you both mean the Capitol CD Hollywood Stampede Correct!

  10. Yeah! Kinda the way I see it too.
  11. I have the Mosaic set and love it! You can count me as a fan.
  12. IIRC the lyrics to this were written by Abel Meropool - who also wrote the lyric to Strange Fruit. After the execution of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg he adopted and raised their children.
  13. I agree about the key change. I wonder if that was a point of contention between Ike and Spector ...or if the track was already in the can before it was given to Tina.
  14. Yeah - imho - a power play by Spector in order to be viewed as the omniscient producer and to continue to promote his public perception as such. You know the scene - Spector is the guy who knows how to get Tina a hit and Ike is the guy holding her back with his "fixed" ideas. A scenario that can work for those inclined to buy it but my viewpoint is that Spector's production was another take on Tina and the response is subjective as to whether you like Spector's Tina or Ike's Tina. In my case I'm glad Spector's record is around - and I dig it - but I give the edge to Ike's funk over Spector's wall of sound. Once the record was done Spector was out of the picture and Ike was again in the driver's seat. He's the musical director for the live show and he's going to do what he likes - which happens to be funky, smokin' R&B with great visual impact. Same approach for Honky Tonk Woman and Proud Mary.
  15. Burnin'! Ike and Tina did some of the cookinest greatest 60s soul stuff and quite a few live albums that I haven't seen pop up much on cd. There was one cd reissue of 2 great lps from Warner and Loma, but I can think of at least a couple of other live lps that afik haven't resurfaced. Tina may have gone on to greater success and she may have had good reason to leave Ike, but the music never burned as much when Ike wasn't around.
  16. For those that haven't seen The Rat Race - Gerry Mulligan, Sam Butera and Joe Bushkin all had speaking as well as playing roles.
