  1. RIP Tony. Maybe five or six years ago I saw him at njpac in Newark in a stage presentation of Some Like It Hot. Tony played the Joe E. Brown role in this production and was terrific.
  2. There were at least 2 or 3 by the odjb. Clarinet Marmalade, Darktown Strutters Ball for two and the "live " band played "Livery stable Blues."
  3. I think not. i.e. For one example - iirc there are NO tracks on this lp where Pee Wee and Cutty appear together. It would have been better listed not as a lineup but rather "Musicians include....".
  4. I have an unsigned copy. I bought it online new just a few years ago. It's just a grab bag of previous sessions. IIRC The Royal Garden is from a mgm 10' lp, When The Saints Go Marching In. Quite a few tracks are from Kapp MS 7520 The Battle Of the Dixieland bands. This has Doc Cheatham, Red Richards, Vic Dickenson, etc. There's the session with Miff and Pee Wee that was on Jazztone. Susie is from Bud Freeman's Summa Cum Luade Bix album. Apologies for being vague - I haven't a chance to listen all the way through now, but I think that covers much of it. Edit to add: By the time I posted I saw Jazztrain's post. I think what he says plus the Kapp lp and the MGM lp pretty much cover things.
  5. 78 rpm albums were common. Jazz albums were common after 1940 or so. I think the first jazz issue was Chicago Jazz on Decca Followed by Kansas City Jazz and New Orleans . All George Avakian productions. Many 10" lps were issued with the same cover as the 78 issues.
  6. Reading Jack Finney's About Time. It's a collection of short stories about time travel by a master of that genre. Time travel has been a favorite of mine since I could understand the concept.
  7. Since this turned out to be a mention of SO many clarinetists - Let's put Tony Parenti in honorable mention. He had it going on.
  8. I'm a big fan of Jack McDuff's bass lines in addition to Jimmy Smith.
  9. ....And you can get those via download on Amazon.
  10. Hey Lon....Hey Lon, Hey Lon...................... HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!!
  11. I find that some of the pop music that I've listened to in the past bores me now. I've od'd on them and can play the record back in my head. This doesn't happen so much with jazz and I think it has to do with the amount of improvisation on the recording. When a tune is arranged and the rhythm section is restricted a pattern after awhile there is no more "surprise" to it. At that point I find myself getting bored with it. For me this really happens with "iconic" pop tunes that you hear everyplace. On tv commercials, movie soundtracks, radio etc etc.
  12. The sound on the Archeophone Caberet Echoes is noticeably better than other issues I've heard of this material - even JRT Davies issues. It's a great disc to have.
  13. Yeah...how many times can you listen to a commentary - even a good one. My solution was to burn just the music to a cdr,
  14. It starts right at 2:07 and it's definitely not Red. At 2:13 he doees a little rip that is a Bunny trademark. BUT imho it's a Bunny influenced horn, not Bunny - the rest of the solo isn't up to Bunny's talent.
  15. There's an Art Hodes Blue Note date with Ray Coniff blowing some solid tailgate. IIRC Max Kaminsky and Rod Cless complete the front line. Good stuff! It's on the Mosaic Hodes set and I have a blue note 45 that came in a cardboard jacket with a session photo as the cover. Coniff is a fine musician - he just took the commercial route when it became an option. An option that many musicians wish they could have.
  16. RIP Paulo. All I can add to the above is I've always enjoyed his music.
  17. I think Billy Butterfield was in a Muggsy Spanier state of mind on Summit Ridge Drive.
  18. Good interview! Bettye Interview
  19. Doctor's get emergencies. IF that was the case the office personnel should of informed you asap and you could have made an informed decision whether to stay or leave.
  20. I pretty much stuck with Firesign. The only related recording I bought was this:
  21. Nat Adderley "In The Bag" w. Cannon, Ellis Marsalis, James Black, Same Jones..
