    Henry Red Allen

I like the RCA recording from the 50s with Coleman Hawkins, Cozy Cole, etc. It swings and the sound his good so you get to hear Red's sound. It came out on cd as "World On A String." It shouldn't be too hard to find. On RCA vinyl it was "Ride, Red, Ride." Also the 1932 sides with Billy Banks Rythmakers are very hot. Red, Fats, Waller, PeeWee Russell, Eddie Condon, Gene Krupa...........!!! There's a classics cd with all of them on it. Under Billy Banks name. Really, just start getting whatever you can find. The JSP set is definitely another one to get. Red is one of those people that If I see something I don't have - I get it.

    Jimmy Dorsey

Lots of love and respect for Jimmy Dorsey's playing here. I think he's one of the unsung heroes of Jazz and I believe his influence is much more pervasive than most realize. I was only 10 when he died but I remember him as a star. I remember the Dorsey Brothers TV show and it seemed to me Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey were household names as I was growing up. I also remember him more as an alto player than clarinetist, although "Dixie By Dorsey", an album where Jimmy plays clarinet exclusively was among the first jazz I ever heard. A favorite Uncle had it on 78 and played it often. The point I'm trying to make is that perhaps he was so pervasive, so "in the air", that his playing was a very big influence, but in a sense he was taken for granted. He had chops galore and a great sound - I'm sure the musicians of the time were listening and digging him - they had to be. I think Bird is one of the few who acknlowedged Jimmy and I think that speaks well to Bird's candor and honesty.
  3. Yeah...the compression has really made some stations unlistenable for me. Not all stations use it but it seems to be the way pop, oldies and rock fm has gone. Sucks. It does seem to me that AM did sound better back in the day. Not sure if I'm right, but I think I have a pretty good memory for things like that. No question FM sounded better (sans all this compression bullshit).
  4. Because this is "complete" it has A LOT of things I have never heard before. It has all the flops, many of which are comparable to the tunes that made it. You would never hear them if not for this box. My intention would be to eventually distill what's here into my own compilation.
  5. I have the first three boxes and hope to acquire at least four and five. I still have quite a few of the original 45s and pretty much think the sound is accurate. Motown ususally used different mixes for the lps. Less bass on the lps. For my money this stuff is worth it for James Jamerson's bass alone. edit to add: There's lots of other good stuff here too. Jr. Walker, Gladys Knight, Marvin, Stevie.......etc.
  6. Great record. I saw Curtis and this rhythm section perform this music live at the "Other End" on Bleeker Street right after the lp came out. Smokin' !!
  7. Happy Birthday and many many more!
  8. Intimidade is GREAT !
  9. Titus Pullo is a bad mother........
  10. I've been enjoying this whole season, but it has been pointed out to me by more than one person that if I wanted to see the real deal I should get "I, Claudius." Opinions?
  11. Dan is right - It IS really tough to go wrong with Lock and Griff Here's another to add to those already posted. I like it a lot.
  12. I have this record and I can't remember exactly when I got it, but it's the late 50s or early 60s. Mine has the numbers as you describe, but is a black label and there is no encryption in the vinyl.
  13. Don't overlook the Specialty cds. They're pretty good too, although I love the Rhino.
  14. That's great news. Congratulations !
  15. Same here.
  16. Jim, I remember sending a taste to you guys a while back -I don't remember how! Can we send thru paypal or directly via credit card?
  17. There's two labels that I think are being confused here. There is Document and (this Teddy Wilson issue) Documents.
  18. I found both discs to be highly enjoyable. Listening to these made me realize (again - as BFTs usually do) how much I DON'T know. I enjoyed it alot....and didn't know WHO I was listening to most of the time. There weren't many people I recognized (and that's good - that's what this is really about). I got Zoot and I almost got Oscar Aleman. I had to compare my Django to realize it wasn't the record I first thought. THEN I figured Aleman. Thanks Durium..It's a nice set of discs. Not an unintersting track on there.
  19. Copeland:Miles [Davis], mostly crap. Some of his early records where he had Tony Williams, great, I love those. That's early Miles? WTF is Birth Of The Cool ?
  20. I have the 1987 CD and am happy with it. Same here. The thing is...this is a great opportunity for those that don't it have to GET IT ! Straight out - This is essential jazz.
  21. Yeah..."Lola" is a gas! These guys were in prime form when they recorded this. It's probably been "anthologized" a lot and shouldn't be too hard to come across. It's almost always on discs dedicated to early Condon or early Bean. Also..be on the lookout for further incarnations of this. I'm not checking my self on this but I think it's "Life Spears a Jitterbug" on Commodore that is the same changes and has Eddie Condon and Pee Wee on board. There is at least one more tune which title escapes my memory at the moment. Another Condon thing, probably another Commodore recording.
  22. I'm already sick of the media frenzy. Yeah...it's great for the shithead politicians. It gets them off the front burner. But then the corporations all own the network media. Hmmmmm.
  23. ...but sad none the less.

    SOUL STATION

I think when you hear somebody you dig, you tend to like the first few recordings you hear by them.
  25. The thing is....whatever direction he went in, the musicality of it is of a high quality. AND that's an understatement. I've been revisiting some of the fusion things from 70s and 80s and finding that often I dig them a whole lot more now then. So I guess I'm mainly talking Weather Report, Mahavishnu and Chick's RTF. Then I dug them "Up to a point". Now I'm digging it right thru.
