In his Reddit AMA (http://www.reddit.com/comments/1n41x1) he mentioned that he listened to a lot of jazz and specifically mentioned solo Keith Jarrett.

I know... I think that may be one of the reasons I never got into him. I was probably right on the tail end of putting together my Coltrane collection of almost 100 discs... My wallet was already in ashes. I swear, when i look at my collection, there are so many artists that are under-represented (relative to how much i dig their music) due to the fact that i was low on cash at the time that i was going crazy for them (see John Butcher). The flip side is that there are artists that are over-represented due to the fact that i was flush at the time.

RIP, loved his playing with Lacy.

RIP. He was a wonderful actor, and i do think that there was something about him that touched a lot of people (the entirety of the front page of the national newspaper is dedicated to him over here today). So sad that he chose to take his own life.

That is truly rage inducing. When i read the subject title of this thread, i thought it was going to be that it was a fake grant that he was promised or something... but no, someone ripped off his roughly $500,000.00 Kyoto Prize. It was going to be money in Taylor's bank account. Does anyone know the ins or outs insurance/bank/legal/Inamori Foundation wise as to whether Taylor will get any of the money? It doesn't look likely.

I would have sprung for that but already have the first two (Parker and Butcher). Would like the other two eventually. I'm a huge Butcher fan but nobody else seems to be, or at least not hearing about it. Getting in to more John Butcher has long been on my to do list. I've been truly knocked out by what i've heard of him, and i'm not just saying that. I had a solo disc of his, Fixations (14), which i truly loved, but it was second hand and had some horrific skip-causing scratches on it that ultimately led me to throw it out (thinking i'd get a new copy some day but never did). He'd be pretty high up on any 'guys you dig but are drastically under-represented in your collection' list for me.

I still need to check out Orrin Evan's leader stuff... he's excellent on Bloom.

They're very interesting albums. Thoughts not gathered at the moment but yeah, outstanding.

Awesome, i wonder if Emanem will do more deals with Hat in the future.

Record Collections...and then there are Record Collections

I've wondered about this myself... i've always figured if the world gets to that stage music will probably be the least of my worries... it's a stangely comforting thought! -
The Farmers by Nature will be a shure shot for me. Really loved their previous album! I'm on the fence at the moment. Touching on what Steve said i think they are an oddly hard group to warm to. I dug them at the time but pretty much never revisit the two previous albums on Aum... have been trying to revisit them recently and just find them strangely hard to get through. There's definitely something there, but it's definitely 'have to be in the right mood' type stuff for me. Wishlisted for now, i need for something to come out on Aum that i can't live without and then i might add Love and Ghosts to my order. Funny how those things can differ so immensly. There's still tons of free/avantgarde stuff that (for now at least) I find hard to digest, but Farmers by Nature imediately hit me in the right spot when I first heard them. For some reason their interplay and use of rhythm conects with me on a very basic and instinctive level. Yeah, totally. Mileages vary! And moods too... just not feeling FBN at the mo but i'm sure it'll come back to me.

'Ruth' from Bobby Hutcherson's Spiral.

All i know is these new-to-me Bobby Hutcherson albums are kick arse, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Sun Ra's Supersonic Jazz this morning, the new Steve Lehman is awesome and i can't wait for Halvorson's Reverse Blue album to finally come out on Relative Pitch in the next couple of months. I couldn't care less what some random has to say, even less so for the ''jazz is all about freedom maaaaan" counter comments. Kill it all with fire. Reading comments on the internet should come with an official health warning. It is the worst possible constitutional on a Saturday morning, or any morning, or night. Please don't misconstrue this as outrage.

Digression thread: Coherence is overrated

Marge: Relax. Everyone knows that if you die in a dream you just wake up. Professor Frink: Oh, ah, actually because I neglected to install the latest Adobe Acrobat update if you die in the dream you die in real life. Incidentally, I've also proven that hell is real and everyone goes there. Frink out. -
As i said i don't think there's too much in it, but maybe there is a bit of general contrarian/backlash in there. When i was heavily in to hip hop i mostly listened to underground/alternative/avant garde (yup) stuff, and, you know, we generally thought it was the hip stuff to be in to as opposed to listening to Puff Daddy. At some point, i reckon around 2002/2003, i think the backlash started and people that only listened to underground stuff and thought that the mainstream was wack started to be looked down on. I think that all the overly earnest/overly sensitive rappers in the underground were starting to get a bit annoying/self parody-ish too, and i think there was a bit of reaction to that as you saw more overtly thuggish stuff start to gain populariity in the underground. Anyway, not sure if i'm making sense. Just saying that, if jazz was popular enough, i could liken what Freeman is saying to being indicative of a larger movement where it's no longer cool to be only in to the obviously cool stuff and look down on the less cool stuff. As it is it's probably just something that he's feeling.

All i'll say is that i'll miss Allen's posts if he is indeed gone for good. On a selfish level i'll miss the extremely generous deals that he offered to board members when he had a new release.

Ordered Medina, Patterns and Spiral... have wanted them for a while and the price is right. I dig the covers too! Might check out the Mobleys next.

Will try to check them out. I listened to some stuff on Spotify (not the albums mentioned) and quite liked what i heard.

I don't think it's a 'shots fire!' sort of thing where he's taking aim at the scene or whatever in earnest, more a bit of light ribbing, partly because i feel like Freeman has covered that sort of stuff favourably in the past (i could be wrong). I think Freeman is okay. I definitely sense some holes at times, but i don't hold him to a very high standard. He's like 'one of the guys' rather than 'insert name of universally revered and respected jazz critic here'. The J-Pop and K-Pop thing gets on my nerves though, i really don't get why otherwise sane people feign to sincerely dig that stuff (excuse me while i put on an Elektric Band CD).

Whoa, yeah i think jazz is fair game for a bit of piss taking but that was just... ugly. Was trying to put my finger on what it reminded me of... it actually reminds me of stuff i used to write for History class when i was 13 or 14... the exercise was to write from the point of view of someone who had 'been there when it happened' and were being interviewed after the fact... so, like, someone who was at Pompeii or Hiroshima or D-Day... anyway, my answers to all the interviewers questions were all like: "I don't know," "Because i'm stupid and everyone was stupid," "Who cares" etc. That's what this article reminded me of: a 13 year old having a perpetually bad day taking it out on his assignment in all his juvenile glory, knowing it's shit and not really funny but not really caring.

These are available to order but not coming out until October 22. Ah, i was all excited and didn't look at the release dates. Gives me time to save/convince the wife I like that one too. Always makes me think of Tim Burton films, for some reason; kind of a spooky/cartoonish vibe in places.

I was thinking something along these lines too. People publish collections of short stories, novellas, books of massively varying length, multiple volumes etc... there are still practicalities involved, and with music, even in the digital age, at least for the time being, there are still practicalities involved, but yeah, abandoning the 'album' as we know it definitely opens up the possibilities. Technical and practical limitations are massively tied in with the recentish history of music and how we consume it. Who knows what the future will bring! Next stop, Braxton's orchestra for multiple planets or whatever it is. For some it will be like this though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPc6qaEQ600
