  1. Little "buzzy pad" stylus cleaners were popular circa 1980. I still have mine, virtually unused.
  2. English language newspapers overseas (in places where adherence to copyright laws is "flexible") have had Bloom County and Calvin and Hobbes in print since US print publication ceased.
  3. wishing you all the happiest, Tom!
  4. Complete Remastered Black Saint/Soul Note on sale again at importcds.com
  5. another sale on BS/SN at importcds.com not on the newest batch
  6. Not really meaningful, but I was in a completely mainstream, chain store last weekend, a place that mainly stocks used stuff. They seemed to have the whole set in stock, new. I guess I hope they're right in thinking there's a market for these.
  7. As Tim mentioned, we've had a little offline dialogue. I initiated it based on some stuff I went through (indirectly), just to see if I could offer any help. I don't know what collective or individual sentiment is toward Tim. He's a brave guy facing tough challenges. It's up to him what details he wants to reveal. If you can't overcome "petty squabbles", as impossible puts it, tune out. Please. This is bigger stuff. The rest of us should be thinking of, supporting, and rooting for a human being/jazz lover/friend. I'm inclined to start a support thread, but harbor some small fear that it will devolve. (The advantage would be that knowledge of Tim's challenge and expressions of support don't get buried here.) So join in reminding a friend that he isn't alone.
  8. My problem? My problems? Where to begin... And with my memory what it's become, how will I know when I'm done with the list? Now why'd I come into the bedroom?

    Kenny G

Don't blame the performer. In my conversations with him , I can't recall one where he drew links between his music and mainstream jazz or claimed to be a jazz performer*. He plays where he's invited (and wants to play). Many "mostly jazz" venues on that list. Heck, Yoshi's in Oakland used to be mostly jazz. Now it's Kenny G, Najee, Ohio Players. They present what sells. * That said, some of his "pairings" with Louis Armstrong and others are in questionable taste.
  10. I think so. I'd actually forgotten. I've got the LPs in storage. For me, better than a download. setting aside, for the moment, Mr. Lowe's legal/ethical questions.
  11. I'd love to have this (and Vol 1), but download only. Maybe someday I'll be able, but, for now, no.
  12. This is my first post. Richie is AMAZING - I'm the only jazz singer that's ever recorded with him and we have a second record coming out in 4 weeks - the name of it is "Varuna." There are 3 brand new Beirach compositions (w/my lyrics) and you'll find 2 of his songs (Elm and Nightlake) on our first recording "The Duo Session." (recorded 1993) I had to post because on your list I also recorded with Joe Bonner in the 80's on his "New Beginnings" album! I had the good fortune of sitting in with Joe Henderson when Joanne Brakeen was playing as well! All 3 are incredible musicians and certainly deserve more recognition. Laurie Antonioli I'll add a quick "welcome". I think I saw you/met you with Pony at the Keystone, a few (ahem) years back. I was something of a friend of Pony's during his final Bay Area years. Good old days indeed.
  13. All the best, Lon!
  14. ...and the duets with Tommy Flanagan are nice.
  15. Perhaps unmentioned because he isn't overlooked: Richie Kamuca Overlooked, in my opinion: Nino Tempo. Not so much the stuff with April Stevens, but with Maynard's Dream Band.
  16. I saw her at the Lycee Francais Cultural Center last January or February (2014). It was kind of an accident, since I don't generally care for vocalists. The tickets found their way into my possession, so... No surprise (knowing me), I didn't care for her. Too - I'm trying to think of a good word - flamboyant? Whatever; it says more about me than her. About that time the hype machine started spinning, with features in every magazine and newspaper and regular (presumably paid) radio features. Big turn-off. blind-blake's mention of "handlers" strikes me as the off-putting phenomenon I was dealing with.
  17. Brother, can you spare 1,690 dimes? I'm a little surprised that no one has "reviewed" it on Mosaic's website yet.
  18. I hope it's a great one, md
  19. I honestly can't think of anything that would tempt me more (within the realm of "I have most of the material already, but want the rest".) Comprehensive Pres at his peak (IMO). The three-CD Basie Decca set is a treasure within my collection.
  20. Thanks for the birthday wishes. I'm 30 floors above downtown LA, with a five minute "commute" to my hotel, walking in that nice Los Angeles sunshine. It doesn't get much better than that! (...and I've got internet radio, so I'm not "stuck with" KKJZ - I think locals will know what I'm talking about)
  21. Happy Birthday, fasstrack!
  22. Another I like: Rein deGraff.
  23. Happy Birthday, Tom!
  24. Thanks. I'm not a shopper, but the reaction is interesting. All about expectations, I think. The hype machine.
  25. If Hampton Hawes is overlooked (doesn't seem that way to me, but he's been mentioned) then he deserves to be on the list. Another one that I don't think of as overlooked is Herbie Nichols. A pianist I do think of as overlooked and underrated is Dodo Marmarosa.
