  1. My better half hit a deer a month before Christmas. She said one minute it wasn't there, the next it was. It was at night on country road she didn't know the name of (don't ask me why), so when she called to tell me she hit a deer, it took a while to find out exactly where she was. She had just taken a new job about an hour away from our home and was trying a "new" way home but didn't know the street names (you know how the country roads are all 250 S and 420 W, none of which make any sense to me). The car had about $3500.00 worth of damage but she was ok. The deer actually got up and ran off into the woods, I'm sure it must have been pretty banged up also! Mark
  2. Not necessarily the best but James Moody has a great presence on stage. I just saw Tom Harrell, not great stage presence but a presence none the less. Mark
  3. Hell....I'd pay them more than that to stop by my house and play a solo for me B) ! Mark
  4. uuummmm.....goose tuna I think Ghost sent me a big list about a year ago of many mis-pronounced names of Jazz musicians. Not sure if I still have it but I'll look. Mark
  5. I've never been in a club (anywhere) that provides more for the money than the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. You can see all the tops names in jazz for $20.00 six nights a week and you can always stay for the second show at no cost. There are no other charges, no drink minimum and no pushy waitresses. Randissimo pointed out that Joe Segal tells it like it is. He is correct, Joe tells you to shut your phones off and shut up during the show. It's very rare if you hear a word from the audience during the show other than applause (not out of fear but out of respect for the musicians). Most of the musicians stick around for a bit after the show to B.S. or sign CD's. I've probably been there a couple hundred times and it's always much fun, as there are many regulars (as well as Joe and his son's) that I've become friends with. Our illustrious Sal is one of them, also Jim Neumann has become a very good friend over the years. Jim is the owner of Beehive Records and has a pretty good catalog of jazz in his possession. I'm on him weekly to put them out on cd, I can tell it's going to take a little more arm twisting !!! Mark
  6. The museum is pretty cool, I stopped in to check it out about a year ago as well as the Negro League Baseball Museum in the same complex; both are very nice! It seems as though the area is going through some renovations. I think I remember seeing some nice condos going up in the neighborhood. Mark
  7. Sal, I'd love to make the show but can't get to Chicago in the middle of the week. It sounds like a good one, have a great time! I'll be in town in a couple weeks for Joey DeFrancesco, will you make that one? Mark
  8. 7/4, You actually have a budget for CD purchases, how did you come up with that? By that, I mean how did you determine what you would spend each month or year (or day) on music! Mark
  9. There is actually a new (re-release???) recording out called "Herbie Hancock: Blow Up-Extra Sessions" but I don't think it is from the movie , although I think the label wants us to think it is. I haven't heard it but it's on the Warwick label (before Herbie was on BN). Mark

  11. The Terra is on Michigan Avenue (follow the smell of Garrett's Carmelcorn ), a little north of Erie!
  12. Jazz, Thanks for your service and good luck!!! Mark
  13. Cyrus Chestnut at the Jazz Showcase ($20.00), Jazz Record Mart, Dusty Groove, Art Museum, Man Ray exhibit at the Terra Museum, yummy food!!!! Mark
  14. I picked up this book a few month ago, very nice with lots of great photographs and details on many landmark recordings. I think I saw several used copies on abebooks.com but the book has not been out that long as is still in print. Mark
  15. Bol, I believe the guitarist was Mark Whitfield.. Mark
  16. I wouldn't necessarily assume that every jazz musician that is still playing at 80 is doing it solely for the money......well we all need money but I'm sure some of them continue to play because the love the music, love recording and love playing for people. I would have to say that many of these artists are not even selling out small clubs (although Jimmy still seems to pack them in) and should be greatful that people with so many options are spending their time and hard earned cash to see them. While I hope I'm not "forced" to work when I'm 80, a certain amount of respect should be expected....just my opinion. Mark
  17. I've seen Jimmy a few times. At one show he did with Jimmy McGriff and Melvin Rhyne, he was actually pretty well behaved, but at another in St. Louis he was pretty pissed off all night. There were a small group of college aged kids sitting close to the stage in a pretty small club, he was on them much of the night; just being a smart ass. He asked if any of them played music and one replied that he played guitar, he then walked off the stage and said "listen to this guy, he'll teach you how to play" referring to his guitarist at the time. He left a stage a couple of times and let the band play for 15 minutes at time. When the show is only 60-90 minutes total, this is a long time. I tried to strike up a conversation after the show and while he did sign an original Francis Wolff photograph for me, he was in no mood to chat! ......and that growling he does throughout his tunes are annoying!!! That said, I would probably still go to see him as he is a living legend; but than again he didn't really tear into me! I think I remember someone on the BNBB said that Jimmy walked out of the club after a song or two because he thought the rent-an-organ sounded like shit. Mark
  18. I was in a used bookstore near my home this morning and spotted the following for sale: ~The Cover Art of Blue Note Volume 1 ($12.00) ~50 Years of Atlantic Records (very thick, lots of jazz, hardback, about $38.00) ~Black Beauty, White Heat (7 copies, $10.00) ~William Claxton, Jazz (softcover with Chet Baker on the cover) $12.00 ~Dennis Stock, Made in the USA (Has many nice b+w jazz photographs $15.00). ~Roy DeCarava, The sounds I saw (Hardback, $35.00) In the event anyone is interested or can't find them elsewhere, I'd be glad to pick one (or two) up for you. Mark
  19. Medjuck, The portfolio you are speaking of is a very nice collection of Herman's work and was quite pricing and limited in quantity. I believe that Quincy Jones literally bought about 1/3 of the available sets to give as gifts. I believe you can still get a print of Coltrane that you are referring to, through Mosaic; I bought one several years ago. I think each of the images they are selling are limited to 50 copies, but I don't believe any of them have actually sold that many. Mark
