Mel was originally scheduled to play in Indy tonight with the Dixon/Rhyne project and got the Small's gig. He'll be back home tomorrow for a gig here in Indy at Oranje http://www.oranjeindy.com/ . I think they take the stage at 1:00 a.m. I have some nice casual photos of Mel with Dr. Lonnie Smith as well as a shot of him with Joey D and Tony Monaco. m

Thanks for posting Jim. I shot the recording session for this cd and the line up is correct...I'm also spacing the tabla player's name as well. I do a lot of work for Owl Studios as well and see Mel on a regular basis. I'll see him tomorrow night as well...probably with Fareed, Rob and Kenny. Mel is a great musician as many have suggested and a great guy to talk with...I see him weekly at one place or another and one of my best friends is his brother in law. I think he did tell me at one time he did not like the JazzLand recording mentioned earlier. m~

His last post dates from January 12, 2006. I've talked with AB in the past 30 days. He has just moved on with his life....new city, new job and appears to be settling in fine. He's a good man!!! m~

Caught Organissimo there a while back. Nice club. Got you penciled in for the 20th. We haven't played there since early November last year. As of now there are no Chicago gigs in sight.. ...on the bright side, the Jazz Showcase will re-open soon

I attended this show with another board member (Blake). Sat in the middle of the front row on a picture perfect night.....went to the jazz showcase after it ended to see Charles McPherson and then to the new Velvet lounge to catch Vandermark again....fun night! m~

Jon Faddis w/Moody, Rubalcaba on Tuesday night @ the Harris Theater, Bobby Broom Trio on Wednesday night @ Pete Millers, Herbie Hancock @ Symphony Center followed by the Dana Hall Quartet @ the Velvet Lounge Thursday night and the Chicago Jazz Fest....Friday through Sunday....with at least one afterfest show per night....not gonna get much sleep for the balance of this week! m~

...saw him last night in Indy and had dinner with him. Great guy and a blast to talk to. He was telling me he lived in Indy for a very short time in the early 70s....but didn't recall the exact year. He shared some stories with me about some of the Indy players he work with back in the day. Great show~ Although I've only begun the editing process of my shoot, here is a photo of the good Doctor and one with him and Mel Rhyne. m ....drummer was Anthony Penciotti.

I was wondering who would bring this up. There may always be debate about whether he belongs in the Hall (Marty will tell you many reasons why he should) there is no way in hell he belongs in the broadcaster's area of the Hall. I mean, that's ludicrous. I've never been sure about his qualifications as a player but there's no doubt it didn't hurt that he had friends on the Veteran's Committee. Oh, I totally agree with you; it was a facetious comment. I don't think he belongs in the Hall under any guise. I think people who obsess about who deserves or doesn't deserve to be in HOF are the kind of people who make listening to sports talk radio such an ordeal. ...amen brother!
