what cant you skimp on?
sheldonm replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Contrary to others here, I tend to buy cheap sunglasses because I'm always losing/breaking them. aloc skimps on reading glasses. dollar tree sells them for a dollar each in whatever strength works best for one. no more losing/breaking/laundering $100 reading specs. aloc has a dozen or so pair in a drawer and has received a compliment or two on some of them. even the most expensive specs cost $2 per pair to manufacture. ...hell, I wish I could find good ones for $100.00! -

I would agree with Joe on eye glasses....no skimping on camera gear as well.....although I could be spending a hell of a lot more than I am! m~ -
I was in NYC to see vision fest several weeks ago and ran into Laurie Pepper at the Jazz Record Center. I had met her last year in LA while she was discussing her movie about Art and stuck up a conversation with her in NYC. She told me was in town to be interviewed for the story with Sue. She was also hitting some record stores to stock them up on her latest release of Art's work. It was good to see her out there keeping Art and (art) in the public eye. Nice lady and lots of energy! BTW, Laurie has a newly revampted Art Pepper website...although I had some issues accessing some of the links on it today. Met Sue Mingus as well, last year and have traded some emails with her.....very nice as well and doing a great job of getting some of Charles long lost or undiscovered works out there! m~

Thanks for adding the rainbow picture last. Otherwise I couldn't help thinking about how I had to mow the lawn, and what a pathetic job I do compared to those who cut the grass at Busch. Great pictures of course, and thank you so much for sharing. Having watched Lou Piniella's head almost explode several times earlier this season, it's something else to see the Cubs getting so close. I hope that every 25 years thing keeps working for Milwaukee though. Of course being a Cardinal fan since almost birth, I have never been a Cubs fan (though I have fond memories of many of their great players). Many of my friends (my work HQ is in Chicago) are lifelong fans. Of course I hope for their collapse (if only to see Lou have a melt down); this year has been interesting. I have no illusions of winning anything this year (without any pitching) but the (almost) sweep this past weekend gives the Cards a little life. Win or lose, a tremendous baseball town! m~

Great photos Mark!!! It would be so very weird to see a ballgame in St. Louis, and it not be the ol' generic (yet somehow loveable to me) Busch stadium. Didn't know you could see the "old" Courthouse from the stadium, very cool! Thanks! Yes, it is kind of strange. As a small child, I made it into the old Sportsman park a few times in it's last year of existence and I must have seen a couple hundred games in the recently retired Busch Stadium....always a great way to spend an afternoon! My oldest sister has lived there since 1965 so I spent much of my summer vacations in STL. They are in the process of building a ballpark village beyond the left center field area that will have retail/restuarants and so on...may still be a year or two away. Also hosting the 09 All-Star game there...looking forward to that. m~

...on a non-Barry Bonds story....I went to the four game series between the Cards/Brewers this weekend at the new (last year) Busch Stadium. After getting pasted on Friday night...the Cards went on to beat the Brewers the next three games. I took my 15 year old nephew to the games; he's a very good baseball player at t his stage of his life. Their were two big rain storms on Friday night before they threw out the first pitch, then hot and humid for the balance of the weekend. Here are a few photos from the weekend.

Henry's is a book of poetry reflecting on his thoughts over a long period of time including the time he was off the music scene. It was supposed to include some of his drawings as well but for some reason they were not included. I am not a poet....and I know it.......... but as I've had a chance to spend a little time with Henry over the past couple years, I think it's quite interesting. I did not pick up the Parker book but the publisher sent me a copy even thought I did not contribute to it. I have not read this one yet...only paged through it a bit but it appears to be interesting as it's William's take on music, the players, the industry and so on. Hope to read it in the next week. m~

I picked up a couple of these from the Bastards this weekend....Dr. Lonnie Smith's "Keep on Lovin'" and Lucky Thompson's "Illuminations". The Thompson disc is pretty staight forward playing by Lucky...Walton's electric piano gives it a trippy feel. I really like Lonnie's disc as well with the exception of his singing on the title track. He sings on at least one other track that I can get into. Overall, I'll pick up others from this batch of releases. Note.... the liner notes leave a LOT to be desired. Nothing there but the song titles and a few credits. m~

What live music are you going to see tonight?
sheldonm replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Phil's a great guy. He just sent me an LA newspaper with an article about him. He played in Indy (his hometown) with Slide Hampton and Steve Davis a couple months ago and I sent him some photos of the three of them. Belgrave will be here in the near future...would be good to see Phil show up to play. m~ -
Yes, I was at one of those shows with you--thanks for holding the great seats! Definitely go see Benny; it's incredible, if nothing else, simply to hear him perform something like "I Remember Clifford" or "Along Came Betty" live. ....and one from that show! m~
