Couldn't ignore the trade deadline BS. I am done but reserve the right to return solely to talk about the Cubs. That ought to annoy you even more. I'm not annoyed; just having some fun! Glad to be of service. Three in the loss column to the Cubbies! ...oops...looks like the Cubs lost again tonight...and the cards won!

Giving up Masterson is giving up a lot of flexibility, as someone that could be an eighth inning guy (last year) or a long man/starter (this year - and he didn't do it very well this year either). In all seriousness Masterson slipped significantly in my eyes this year. V-Mart is a very good hitter with no real position, though he can play 1B and he catches. He's a substantial offensive weapon, the problem is that there is no place for him to play without sitting a regular everyday starter. What do they plan to do, sit Youkilis, Varitek, Lowell and Papi once a week? That's not a full week from Martinez, who is used to being a starter. I'd love to find out that since they didn't give up Clay or Bard that somehow they are going to pull of Halladay, but the reality is that they have less than an hour to deal poor Adam LaRoche, who came to Fenway, looked at the Monster, and smiled, and now is going to end up somewhere else less than 10 days later. Unless of course he is going to Cleveland since I am pretty sure they need a 1B now - weren't Garko and V-Mart sharing the position? I will say this - with V-Mart signed for next year, they will either ease him in as primary catcher over 'Tek (because even if they don't exercise the team option on Varitek, Varitek has a player option) or else look seriously at sending Lowell away in a Lugo-style 100% salary dump, as no one will take Lowell with his bad hip. The Phils must be ecstatic that Lowell didn't take their offer in 2007, or they'd be on the hook to him for two more years. ....is it 2010 already ?

I liked him a lot too. I think Cardinal fans did too as the team got him back from SF after just one year away. As far as his "speed" it was too bad he never raced Brooks Robinson. Cardinal announcers loved to compare the two (range factor didn't exist back in those innocent days. ) I too remember him being hot in April, and what do you know, for once the memory wasn't made up! Batting Average for April (courtesy of retrosheet.org) 1974 - .417 1975 - .369 1976 - .369 (his season w/ the Giants) 1977 - .211 (oops, back w/ STL. Hits .366 in May.) 1978 - .315 1979 - .324 1980 - .397 (batted .195 for June & July) 1981 - .192 (now w/ Cubs) 1982 - w/ Pirates, does not bat in April, gets 10 AB in May & June and is out of baseball. Lifetime he was a .260 hitter who hit .314 in April. His worst month was September .243. Oh I don't know, the average March temp is 73. Oh wait, that's Egypt. Having spent some August days in Little Egypt (Southern Illinois' nickname) I just assumed that summer heat & humidity was still hanging around to keep you warm in the winter. (I know better, but that summer weather is so wicked that I still have flashbacks.) Regarding ruined arms it must have been bad, look at Pete Gray. IMO too. Sorry all for passing on the Rose rumor. Dan Patrick sounded very convincing that day. ...loved Reitz back in the day!

I'm putting on a panel discussion this coming Sunday at the Jazz Kitchen with several of the legends of Indiana Avenue.....bassist Mingo Jones, Al Coleman (owned a club and was a drummer), trombonist Reggie DuValle (his grandfather let the first band to play at the famed Madame Walker Theatre) and Dr. David Baker. They will discuss the scene in the late 40s, 50, and beyond. I've invited Ghost to moderate this discussion. If any of you are in the Indy area this coming Sunday, it discussion starts at 4:30....followed by the Kenny Phelps trio and then Deep Blue Organ Trio....! m~

....hey Bobby; I like the new cd . See you a week from Sunday in Indy! I may be in Chicago this Sunday so maybe I'll see you at South Shore as well. m~

...Holliday with four hits tonight....Lugo with a triple and HR.

...the Cards pick up Matt Holliday from the A's for several prospects....will be a pretty nice improvement over Duncan! m Yowsa! And to think they were looking to trade him. He's thrown a "regular" no-hitter before as well so he's in some interesting company. Like Steve Busby. (No perfect for Steve, but 2 no hitters.) Hey, why no love for Bob Forsch??? He had 2 no-no's and he didn't exactly have Nolan Ryan's fastball either! ...and a great catch by center fielder DeWayne Wise in the 9th inning to save a hit/homerun.... he had just entered the game for defensive purposes...what a catch! m My favorite highlight from yesterday(Well, next to the catch itself) was the reaction of the Phillies clubhouse after the catch...cameraman caught them hopping, and hollering, so excited, very cool! Hope you can get still get tickets this late! ...loved Bob Forsch back in the day! Probably saw him pitch a dozen times. m

...don't think I ever saw this thread before....love wine as does my better half. We've spent a lot of time in Napa/Sonoma as well as some vineyards in France/Italy. I'll post some vineyard photos some time...not that anyone necessarily cares....though many of them are beautiful. m

What live music are you going to see tonight?
sheldonm replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Derrick Gardner @ the Jazz Kitchen in Indy (this weekend). Oliver Nelson Jr (yes, Oliver's son) @ the Chatterbox in Indy (next weekend) Mel Rhyne @ the Chatterbox in Indy (next weekend as well) -
...have also slowed down on cd buying. Probably picking up more books these days and picking up some new camera equipment is taking it's toll. I probably go to more shows/festivals now than ever before and I've always gone to a lot of them. The expenses associated with going out of town to festivals (hotels/food/flights/cds) are out of hand and I guess the money has to come from somewhere and much of it has come out of cd purchases. I've also put on a couple events to benefit local Indy musicians and some of those funds come out of my pocket.

.....wow, you guys actually look at the notes...I'm impressed. The shoot was fun; I tried to get Bobby into the wagon if only for one shot but he wasn't buying it. He was sure I was going to use it for evil .....not that I would consider doing that . Resident jazz shrink Rob Viti attended the shoot last August and assisted; it was a makeshift studio in one of the rooms at Pete Millers during the off hours. I think Bobby has a nice distinctive sound that I like it alot. I've had the opportunity to see/hear/photograph the band lots of times and they are always a joy to see; a pretty tight unit. Dennis and Kobie are great guys as well. Apparently Sonny thinks a lot of Kobie having now played with him for a couple years and Dennis is a first call bass player around Chicago and the midwest...have caught him with a ton of players..saw him recently with McPherson as well. m
-
...the music is back at Pete Millers. If you were listening to these guys, you were probably the only one. This is one noisy place most nights with diners talking over the music all night....but at least they feature live jazz almost every night of the week which is great. m~

...not as long as you're still wearing a mullett.

Art liked playing, period. Anywhere, anytime. He just wanted a crowd, because he worried about the club owner losing money and not having him back. He sometimes scolded crowds for being so small. Seriously. I had to remind him that the people he was scolding actually DID show up.

Man, I really like that set! m
