  1. Judging by the title, I thought this thread was about Gene Tierney. Oh well...
  2. Ah, the memories of that fine emporium . Picked up lots of Japanese import Blue Note titles there (including a rare sighting for the time of the Tyrone Washington). The range they had in the early to mid 1990s was pretty astonishing. Indeed. The Tower at Columbus and Bay streets here in town used to have a great jazz section. I bought loads of stuff there right up through the early 2000's. Used to be a great place to just browse too.
  3. I'm a big fan of the show. Recently I re-watched the whole series on DVD and it stands up quite well.
  4. Intriguing idea for a thread. I like a lot of Kyo's and TMG's suggestions. Right now all I can think of is Louis Smith's two BN albums on one disc: Here Comes Louis Smith/Smithville. Haven't computed playing times, but I'd be surprised if these added up to more than 80 minutes. As for "2 on 1" CD's that have already been done, I'm particularly thankful to 32 Jazz for 'single-discing' two of Sonny Stitt's best albums, Tune Up and Constellation. Of course, it's out of print now, but still... And perhaps my favorite Benny Carter CD (which is saying a lot) is the Verve reissue "3,4,5"---two albums and 3 bonus tracks. (The trio album has Carter playing with Teddy Wilson and Jo Jones; does it get any better than that?) Then there's the wonderful Stuff Smith double-disc set from a few years back that is in effect "3 LP's on 2CD's." For a while Verve was cranking out several of these "3 on 2" sets...And there's Sonny Criss: The Complete Imperial Sessions, an essential 3 on 2...but maybe we shouldn't get into that right now.
  5. Very, very sad news. RIP
  6. I totally agree with your assessment of the Parlan boxset. I've been listening to it alot lately. As I posted in the 10% off thread, this boxset is killer. It doesn't seem to get the kudos some of the other boxes get, although I really have never seen a bad thing said about it. The trios on the first couple of discs are outstanding. And the boxset really picks up when the Turrentines and Booker Ervin get involved. Definitely one to pick up before it disappears. Nice to see some others are digging this box too. I let it sit on the shelf for a long while before recently "rediscovering" it so to speak. Great music.
  7. Lately I've been listening to the Horace Parlan box over and over, particularly discs 3,4, and 5. Wonderful stuff.
  8. Same here; that's the issue I got, and still have. Great album, great choice. I'm going to give it a spin tonight. "Fleurette Africaine" is my favorite track on the album---just a masterpiece.
  9. Yes, and ones that haven't closed have slashed their jazz sections down to microscopic size. Sad.
  10. Thanks for the info, ghost. I've been curious about the Mr. Moto films for years, not least because the title character is played by a young Peter Lorre. Provided the name for a great surf-instrumental, too.
  11. ....And they don't even have to live there???
  12. I prefer his musical doodles. Slightly.
  13. I don't get the connection with the old New York airport.
  14. Pax is good. I've got to admit, I like it more than Point of Departure.
  15. A new routine for Letterman: "Is It Waterproof?"
  16. Wow, who would imagine that this guy could get violently drunk and spew crazy, hateful nonsense?
  17. It's Olive Oyl's mom! Why did they all have needle noses in Archie comics? Also, did anyone see Mad Magazine's parody of many years ago, "Starchie"? His gal pals, 'Biddy' and 'Salonica', had acne; 'Wedgie' shook down the weak at the cafeteria for lunch money; Starchie's dad was a drunken gypsy in a t-shirt who screamed 'who makes noise in mine teenage house?' Yeah, that was great! From the early, golden days of Mad.
  18. This sounds so damn cool....I'm sure it wouldn't work for me.
  19. Indeed, Our Dumb Century was and is great, the Onion equivalent of pitching a no-hitter. I remember buying it and bringing in to work and getting a few stares. "It's satire," I explained.
  20. Thanks couw, I'll have to look for these.
  21. As of last night: The Columbia Jazz Piano Moods Sessions.
  22. Look, STITT'S the one who's "bad," not me. I'm sure I barely qualify as mediocre.
  23. Thanks. Those samples sounded good to me.
  24. Wagner was really asking for it.
