    Herbie Hancock

He may be an egotistical prick but that "prick" has got some serious skills; and let's face it, he influenced an entire generation of drummers that came after him. Some of which that may even be associated with the operators of this fine board. B-)
  2. Guinness & Guinness of course....
  3. This one.... ...with this one being a close second On the Jazz tip it's gotta be this one....
  4. Jim, Thanks for explaining. It all makes perfect sense. I couldn't tell you the number of times in the past that I held off buying an album because of the price only to find out after finally relenting that the album was very good and I wished I had bought it sooner ....live and learn. I have made a concerted effort this year to support new artists and buy new releases much more than I have in the past. I'm always looking for the absolute best prices on the select reissues that I want so I can spend more money on new releases which tend to cost more. I agree that paying a bit of a premium for new jazz releases (especially those of the caliber of Danilo Perez' latest) is more than reasonable. I happened to benefit this time from procrastination; however $18-25 seems reasonable for low volume high quality releases. P.S. Looking forward to the new Organissimo album.
  5. Care to elaborate? I'm slow that way, sometimes I need things spelled out? B-) I prefer to be part of the solution not the problem when it comes to supporting jazz. Just curious to know exactly where your coming from.
  6. Maybe so. But their heart was in the right place. (Tribute to Duane)

    Kenny Garrett

Yeah, that's what I saw. My bad.

    Kenny Garrett

Thought I saw somewhere that Kenny has been working with Archie Shepp lately? Can't place the source though. Probably this board. B-)
  9. Why don't you buy Solid if you don't already have it. B-) Some of Grant's finest playing. He is really being pushed on this date and he responds to the challenge.

    Herbie Hancock

Patiently awaiting the arrival of Flood, Thrust, and Complete WB Sessions. Should have them by the end of the week with a little luck.

    Buddy Guy

Yeah, last time I saw him it was a bit frustrating. Although he played well, the showmanship was a bit distracting at times. That said, I will put up with quite a bit of "showmanship" when it's Buddy. A national treasure....

The Complete WB Sessions is available at YourMusic.com. That one is a no brainer considering the price. Thrust and Flood, got it!

    Herbie Hancock

Over the last few weeks I've rediscovered the album Headhunters. It's an album that I must of listened to hundreds of times back in the day. However, until this month I probably hadn't listened to it for 6 or 7 years. Something struck a nerve and now I've been on a serious Herbie kick. Especially the funky stuff. I recently bought Sextant and Man-Child and really enjoy both. Those two albums plus Headhunters represent my exposure to Herbie's funky side. My limited perspective tells me that these three albums represent a real nice overview of the many shades of funk that Herbie has made. Sextant being maybe the most challenging. Then Headhunters which I see as an impressive balance of commercialism and boundry-pushing. Then, finally Man-Child, a little more slick of a production, however very engaging and enjoyable. Would appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, and welcome general discussion about this somewhat maligned period of Herbie's career. TIA.

    Buddy Guy

Check out Buddy's 2001 release Sweet Tea. There is some extremely aggressive metallic playing on this one. All of it very soulful and bluesy. Young metalheads and blues-rockers would do well to study this album. The tones he gets are incredible! The album opens with a solo acoustic blues called "Done Got Old". The song finds Buddy talking about not being able to do the things that he used to do. Well, that's just a setup (at least from a musical stand point). Buddy is very much alive and kicking. Damn Right, he still got the blues....
  15. I have a 314 and a 355. Both rock solid, very well made guitars. I'm curious to see what these sound like myself. They say coming this spring, isn't spring tomorrow? B-)
  16. Taylor's got something new up their sleeve... ????
  17. I doubt you'll be disappointed. My favorite purchase of 2005 so far.
  18. You probably mean About Face (1984)? Pretty respectable if not essential album.
  19. About two weeks ago I listened to a number of B&W speakers in the new redesigned 800 series including the "D" models with diamond tweeters. Phenomenal! Unless you have 5-7K laying around, do yourself a favor and don't audition them. B-)
  20. I have a number of "doubles" even some "triples" for a rainy day.
  21. I have a real aversion to using picks in general, however when I do use a pick it's a Herco combination flat/thumbpick (medium gauge).

One word for you "wanker", GROOVE
  23. Yeah, I've spent time learning Miles' solo from Green Dolphin Street. One of the best things I've ever done.
