  1. Burlington, Vermont is a neat little town. Lots of pretty scenery and a lot of outstanding microbreweries!
  2. Iraq won the Asian Cup! A huge and historical victory for them. Congrats to the Lions of the Two Rivers.
  3. Really? I've never heard anybody suggest this. Guy Pardon my phrasing...over-recorded is not what I meant to say. I've heard some small gripes from fellow jazz lovers that although everyone loves this group, they wish that some live recordings of other Mingus groups would surface as opposed to just this group, who already has many recordings availiable. I'd like to hear more live material from other phases of Mingus' life as well, but don't get me wrong....I think this was his best group and I hope they continue to find/release more! This new release is wonderful...an incredible discovery.
  4. I finally stopped. I probably buy 1 or 2 CDs a month now, as opposed to the 10-20 I used to buy. Its great not only on my wallet, but learning more about the music I already own actually brings me much more pleasure than buying so much new stuff did. It really is something like an addiction, and it pays (in many ways) to get the monkey off your back.
  5. It sounds very spiritual to me. To me, it sounds like he has tapped into a higher spiritual stream of consciousness and is making an attempt at delivering the sounds of his universe to the listener. There is no other jazz musician that I've heard that that has had this effect on me. I have never heard any anger in this music.....to me, it sounds he is experiencing the sheer joy of some sort of enlightenment, and is attempting to share this joy with the world. I hope this isn't a clichéd answer. Its just that I remember the first time I heard "Meditations", I got this sensation that this would be music that would be played in Sunday morning mass in some sort of alternate universe. And this was before I knew anything about Coltrane's religious convictions. It was just something I heard, and continue to hear, in this music. For me, as a person of little faith in the conventional sense, it gives me a feeling of peace. On the flipside, I can completely see how that if I wasn't able to hear the music in this light, it would sound like random noise. I don't try to sell anyone on this stuff. As far as the moods go, I'm not sure if I can identify what particular moods I'm in when I listen to this music. I seem to have these strong random desires to pull out these recordings and listen. I can tell you though, that I have never listened to these recordings on a Sunday morning or when I'm angry. I simply follow the voices that tell me to listen to them!
  6. Watched it in college for a film class about 8 years ago. A a very decent flick with amazing music. Be sure to turn on the English subtitles!
  7. Probably one of these: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas The Life Aquatic The Royal Tenenbaubs Chasing Amy I've seen them at Target before.
  8. I just wrote ESPN a nasty letter expressing my displeasure at their presentation of the LA Galaxy/ Chelsea match last Saturday (David Beckham's premiere). I felt like I was watching a sports tabloid show rather than a soccer match.
  9. Not sure if its my favorite, but I've listened to "Leave My Woman Alone" probably 50 times since I got the set. Something about that song is very addictive.

    100

I'll spin some of the Mosaic small group session tonight. I'm not a big fan of pre-bop jazz, but something about Johnny Hodges just does it for me!
  11. Yes, all of Birth of Soul is in this. There are some of us who are really tempted to answer "all the other material is essential." I'd have a hard time saying . . . "Well, you don't really need. . . " I'd say about 80% of the jazz sides and pretty much all the live stuff in the set is essential. This is one of the best music purchases I've ever made.
  12. I've listened to my copy just once. I'm very impressed. Its much more "fun" than the other releases from this group. I know some people have had some gripes about this group being over recorded, but this release presents the group in a different perspective than previous releases have, which is a great thing. Not sure whether I'd say its better or worse than any of their previously released work, but its still a must own if you are a fan of this group.

    Prince

I understand that copies of Prince's new album were distributed in the UK inside a newspaper. Have any of our friends across the pond gotten the chance to hear it yet? I've heard that there's lots of guitar on this new album...can never be a bad thing! I've enjoyed his two previous releases quite a bit and am looking forward to hearing this.
  14. David Beckham might not play Saturday against Chelsea due to his ankle acting up again.
  15. Lance Briggs' agent said that they are working towards a deal that will keep both sides happy. Great news for Bears fans....losing Briggs would be a huge, possibly season-altering loss.
  16. I love Trader Joes, but I can't stand two buck chuck.
  17. I only applaud if I really liked the solo.
  18. Unfortunately, my being out of town prevented me from seeing my beloved Mexico fall at the hands of Argentina, as well as the final game. Good call Van Basten II, on the Brazil win! I would have never called that. Speaking of Argentina, looks like Manchester United is finally sealing the deal on Carlos Tevez.
  19. Not sure if I've ever heard these words uttered by a jazz fan before!
  20. Picked up the new release by Spoon titled "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga". Very nice recording! I actually like it better than "Gimmie Fiction", which is the only other Spoon recording I've heard. What's cool about the new release is that it contains a bonus CD that is a 20 something minute mini album of songs between 1:30 - 2 minutes long. Its actually really cool to listen to, and was a nice surprise.
  21. Same here. I'll be getting them both.
  22. Yeah, one of them is this guy named chewy.
  23. That was my first one too! I still think its the finest music I've heard from him.
  24. Not around here.
  25. Didn't know there were wineries in that area. I've been to the wineries in the Finger Lakes region though. Excellent Rieslings.
