Favorite pizza places (past, present)
sal replied to jazzbo's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My favorite Chicago pizza was Giordianos for a long time, but it has now been bumped down in favor of Lou Malnati's. I love Chicago style stuffed/deep dish pizza, but I must admit I'm a sucker for the thin crust. I don't remember names, but I do know that the best pizza I've ever had has been in New York. -
Thanks Big Al!!

It is interesting to listen to Roy Haynes with this group. His style is so different from Elvin's, and his relationship with Trane such a sharp contrast. The duet he goes into with Trane on "Impressions" is really cool, but seems almost surreal to me. Trane always seemed to be most responsive to the drummer more than the other instrumentalists, and his stuff with Roy Haynes (both on these Newport sides and the studio stuff) brings out a different side to him. It reminds me a bit of the first time I heard the Miles Davis Quintet sides with Sam Rivers....a unusually welcome change from the norm, but not something I'd want to keep permanent. Similar to when Miles finally finds Wayne Shorter, its like returning home after a long trip to hear the 1965 show with Elvin. Everything is right and perfect again, yet you can't forget the change you just experienced. I'm loving this reissue!

Transformers, with a real live dinobot!
sal replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My family spent about a year and a half in the States in the mid 80s. During this period I became a Transformers fan. We moved back to Israel in the summer of '86. I was extremely pumped when, shortly thereafter, Israeli TV started airing the show. Better yet, it was translated with subtitles rather than overdubbing. Guy Guy, being familiar with the voices, you'll be pleased to hear Peter Cullen reprising his role as the voice of Optimus Prime. It was a great choice by the movie producers and really provided a nice tangible link to the original cartoon. -
Can anyone give me information about Lee Morgan's "Indeed" session? Is this early or late Lee? Sideman? Is it an exceptional session or is it sort of run-of-the-mill hard bop? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Transformers, with a real live dinobot!
sal replied to Guy Berger's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
As a child of the 80's and a diehard Transformers fan, I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. I could have easily cut a few characters out of the mix, and shed about 20 minutes from the film, but overall I was satisfied and entertained. The human element was weak at times, but whenever the Transformers were on the screen, it was magic. -
Great to hear from you again, Eric! I e-mailed you about a month or two ago to your jazzbrew e-mail....not sure if you still check that. Hope all is well!

what was the finest period in your life

Right now, without a doubt. As I approach the age of 30, I've got a great job, alot of good friends, and my own home. I date alot, get to travel, and live in a place where I have access to great art, entertainment, and food. I'm healthy and happy. Life has never been better! -
Looks my original post got deleted with the upgrade, but I've listened to this one several times and I'm REALLY digging it. I love this band....they keep evolving and growing, yet they keep that same down home grittiness that they've had since their first album. This is a fine album. I think I like it more than Get Behind Me Satan, which I loved.

I remember hearing alot of this music when I was younger, but unfortunatley I never got the original CD issues of these that went out of print so quickly. Its really nice to hear this music again, and discovering so much that I've never heard before. Upon reading reviews for these, so many of the critics make it seem like "Vol. 3" is some kind of sub par follow up, but I quite enjoy Vol 3 very much, although maybe not quite as much as Vol. 1. I love the loose, laid back feel of these masters making music together. The new reissue also has a DVD that I've not watched yet. Anyone pick this up?

I dig the new look of the board. Not having the peach color will make it look much more discrete as I cruise the board at work.

Thierry Henry will play in Barcelona next season

Wow....if Eto'o stays with them, that team will be tough to beat. -
skeith, wait a few months. The "definitive cut" of Blade Runner is hitting theaters this summer, followed by a DVD package that will include the original theatrical version, the directors cut, and this new definitive version that Ridley Scott says is they way the film was supposed to be. I have seen the directors cut, but I never saw the theatrical version so I have nothing to compare it to. I like the film just fine, but I'm not fanatical about it like many people are. Regarding Apocalypse Now Redux, its interesting to see and if you love the film its worth owning both versions. There's a DVD package out there called "The Complete Dossier" that can be obtained for about $12 that has both films. I still prefer the original myself, but Redux is definitely worth a viewing.

He played in what was arguably Miles' greatest group, and was a crucial part of that sound. Just because of the fact that those records exist renders me incapable of saying anything bad about the guy. I even found myself a couple weeks back defending his cello playing on "The Quest", which isn't an easy thing to do.

DEFINITELY worth seeing. He's funny too.

Glad you're doing well! -
Its OK. If you're a completist you should get it, but I don't think your life will be lacking in any way if you don't.

Tennis is another fun one on Wii. Good workout too!
