  1. Had to think about this one for a while. Its an excellent album! I went with side 1.

    Dewey and Joshua Redman

Can't answer your question, JazzKat, but "Beyond" is my favorite of Joshua's recordings.
  3. I don't know what it is about those JJ sessions, but they are just really special. I never knew I could enjoy a trombone quartet so much!
  4. Just don't sleep through the good shows this year, and wake up for the likes of artists like Marcus Strickland!
  5. Unfortunately, I'll be working on Friday while Organissimo is tearing it up on Jackson, but I hope to see everyone on Saturday. I'll be hanging around Grant Park pretty much all day.
  6. Billy Cox was definitely a better fit, IMO. Love "Mabry" and the whole Files album. One of my favorites!
  7. I find Ralph Alessi to be an interesting player. Of the players mentioned, I probably enjoy Ron Horton, Dave Douglas, Terel Stafford and Jeremy Pelt the most.
  8. My booklet doesn't have this error, but it does credit Donald Byrd with writing "Mamacita".... Meanwhile, this might be my favorite Kenny Dorham session. Tommy Flanagan sounds great, and Joe Henderson plays his ass off as usual. The proceedings seem to inspire Kenny's playing quite a bit.
  9. Amazingly, this sale provided me with my first listen ever to Wes Montgomery's "Full House". I never really got into Wes' music, but this record was a revelation. Really excellent stuff! Some of the best Johnny Griffin I've ever heard on record.
  10. I have no idea, but the K2 sounds great!
  11. This is so sad. He was such a kind, knowledgeable guy. I always enjoyed engaging in good discussions with him over at AAJ. This is terrible. Condolences to his family & friends. My god....
  12. Thelonious Alone in San Francisco is another one that was not in the sale.
  13. Looks like I need to go back and check out those early studio releases. I thought that "Hot Rocks" pretty much had the essential material from that period covered. Looks like I was wrong!
  14. I think "A Bigger Bang" is vastly superior to "Bridges to Babylon" and "Voodoo Lounge", which are the only two post-Tattoo You albums I've heard. But I don't think its on the level of their great early seventies albums. But then again, not much is.
  15. Am I missing any essential Rolling Stones studio albums? Below is my list: Hot Rocks Between the Buttons Beggars Banquet Let it Bleed Sticky Fingers Exile on Main Street Some Girls Tattoo You A Bigger Bang Thanks for your feedback.
  16. You didn't imagine it....Wallace Rooney sometimes plays a trumpet that Miles gave him. I don't know the first thing about trumpets, but do remember that part of the trumpet is blue.
  17. I don't care much for the Bad Plus. But I've heard some recordings with him in a more conventional jazz setting, and he strikes me as a really creative player. This one should be good....the idea of younger, more creative players like Iverson and Turner playing with a master drummer like Billy Hart sounds appealing.
  18. Yeah, I thought so too when I read the lineup. I guess that the group was originally billed as the Mark Turner/Ethan Iverson Quartet, but after 1 night playing with Billy, they immediately turned over the leadership role and renamed the group after him.
  19. Anyone heard this yet? Features Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson and Ben Street. Sounds like an excellent band, and the disc got a glowing review over at AAJ. On my short list. Any feedback?
  20. 9 for me. Only regret buying one of them.
  21. Is it really spamming? I just see it as an album review. And he's not exactly praising the new Stanko album either....sounds like a 5 out of 10 review to me.
  22. I've enjoyed the last two discs he's put out with his new band. They sound really good together. I'm looking forward to seeing him play in Chicago this October.
  23. I've dabbled in Paul's music from time to time, but never really got into his post "Graceland" stuff. However, I picked up his new album based on all the positive press its been getting, and after one spin, I can say that its one of the best non-jazz CD's I've purchased in quite some time. Need to give it some more spins, but what caught my ear right away is how musicialy diverse it is, yet each song sounded very interesting and held my interest the whole way tough. Has anyone heard this? I'd be interested to hear some feedback on this one.
  24. My reaction to his music is similar to when I first heard Johnny Lang about 10 years ago. Definitely some talent there, but not much to say....at least not yet.
  25. Yeah, if anyone has any thoughts on "The Source", please post. The sound clips sound facinating.
