  1. I can resist them just fine, but I must admit, a Hellblazer movie would get me out of the house...
  2. Wow! I've got to get the book now! Hell, I've already got enough entertainment out of it to cover the price just reading that thread! You'd think Hardbop would get tired of making stupid comments to Chris and embarrassing himself publicly. I know I did...
  3. Whatever, dude. I suppose you've added me to your enemies list now. Oh well; such is life...
  4. WHAT????? I demand a recount!!
  5. I guess I didn't make my point very well (and my apologies to those frightened by words like "bullshit"; I didn't realize that I was "ranting"...), as I really don't see what your response has to do with my post. My point was that sports is set up as a simplified version of life, where clear-cut winners and losers are easily determined. Any use of sports as an analogy for life is doomed to failure; it's going to be even more simplistic than other analogies because of that simplicity.
  6. Sorry, but this is absolute, complete bullshit. These "number one at all costs" and "there is no second place" thoughts are fine for sports, but only for sports. Applying this reasoning in any form to music, or any other serious effort is absurd. Sports are one of the few areas in life where there is a clearly defined winner and loser. The only point to a sporting event is to determine who wins and who loses. Other than that, it's a totally meaningless event. To apply this kind of thinking to music, or any other endeavor just doesn't work.
  7. I picked it up when it came out, but to be honest I never warmed to it. Unfortunately, I no longer have it, so who knows how I'd react now...
  8. Why, that's the most ignorant thing I've ever....oh, wait; wrong board...
  9. It seems while Psychologists and Psychiatrists are turning their back on Freud that Lit Critics seem to be even more influenced with every passing year. I think it has more to do with the Sexual problems of the Critics.
  10. First of all, these stories weren't created for children. Secondly, the versions we currently have are nothing like the original versions (if the originals can even be found).
  11. Winning 50% of the races he entered? Driver A is the greatest race car driver who ever lived! Driver B is an interesting curiousity, and worthy of respect (finishing no lower than 3rd would be impossible if he wasn't a great driver), but Driver A gets the nod. Hey, this isn't jazz. I can enjoy Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge, but there's no second in sports.
  12. I don't know if anyone else here is a fan of this pianist, but I picked this up this week and I love it. The strange thing is, my wife loves it too. It reminds of of those weird "rate this record" things on the AMG website. She describes it as "nice and relaxing". I describe it as "hot and exciting". One of us is nuts; I wonder which one? It's on the Maxjazz label, one of their few (at this time) nonvocal discs. I must admit, this label is showing up on my shelves more and more... Anyway, I recommend this disc, and I'm wondering if anyone else here has given it a try.
  13. I just got this yesterday, and it gets a BIG thumbs up from me and my wife. Believe me, that's a rare thing! I don't think it will become my favorite Metheny disc, but I think it's going to be up there pretty high. (Just for the record, Offramp gets the honors...)
  14. This time, I'm speechless, Dan...
  15. Okay, I'm over a week late, but what can I say? I was diggin' around at Borders with CD fever and decided to grab a copy. Excellent stuff! I must admit, I'm completely unfamiliar with most of Armstrong's career. I remember the "Hello, Dolly" and "Wonderful World" period from my childhood, and have had a few versions of the Hot Fives/Hot Sevens stuff (including the fantastic boxed set *shameless plug*). However, I had no way of knowing when the early Armstrong became the final Armstrong and was afraid to find out. Now, I'm not going to kid myself or anyone else and say this disc reminds me of the Hot Five stuff; it doesn't. Obviously, it couldn't. An artist that doesn't change over time isn't an artist, he's an oldies act. But damn; he sure had it still on this one! In addition to Armstrong, I must confess to having absolutely no exposure whatsoever (that I can recall at least) to Trummy Young. I like!!! You know, even those of us that aren't participating in the AOTW threads actively are really benefiting from this idea. Thanks for this week's version, JIm!
  16. You don't eat a "plate" of greens; you eat a "mess" of greens!
  17. Jesus Jumpin' Christ! You mean people who are young enough to have had cable when they were kids are posting here???? Damn little punk whippersnapper mumble grrrrr.....
  18. Personally, I'm not sure mine is "age activated", but often times I'll be trying to acomplish something and just dart off in the mid
  19. Well, at least they're still there and getting the CDs out fast; I placed my order Wednesday and the discs are loaded and playing as I type. (Rene Marie's Vertigo, Dave Ellis' State of Mind and finally Andrew Hill's A Beautiful Day for the curious...)
  20. I wish PFunk (if I'm remembering the handle right) was still around myself...
  21. Actually, I think the problem has more to do with me searching before finishing a decent cup of coffee; thanks guys!
  22. One thing I really liked about the BNBB was that I could (with a lot of effort!) usually find a thread that had info even though it hadn't been active for ages. I just tried that here, and I can't find the darn thread! Grrrr... Anyway, can one of you please tell me the name of the bookdealing with free jazz that was recommended to me (and author, of course!)? I didn't write it down, as I assumed I could always look it up when I was ready to buy...
  23. Sigh. Well, so much for good intentions. I caught the first act (the SFJazz All-Star High School Ensemble; pretty neat stuff!) and the first song by the Michael O'Neill Quintet (nice, but a bit too laid back for me...) before a serious disagreement (quaintly known as a "domestic dispute") broke out between me and my wife. Nothing really serious; we've patched up the damage, but unfortunately it cost me the rest of the show. Like I told her, maybe next year I can not only attend, but actually hear the music... On the plus side, a CD vendor there had Snurdy McGurdy and her Dancin' Shoes, so I can finally catch up with the rest of you on that one!
  24. I confess to not keeping up with this thread, so I'm not sure if this band has been mentioned or not, but I just remembered another "recent" band represented on my shelves: The Offspring. Sort of revisionist punk with a sense of humor. (I'll admit, it's the humor that gets me! If I want punk, I'll dig out the Ramones...)
