    RIP Johnny Winter

Like Hendrix, he was the next generation, JW wasn't just a blues man. I don't love everything. When he left Columbia/Blue Sky Records for Alligator and started playing a different guitar, his sound changed and I lost interest for a long time.

    RIP Johnny Winter

JW was really hyper for a blues guy. He reminded me of the English blues/rock guys like Beck and Page. The blues had a baby and they called it rock and roll.

    RIP Johnny Winter

I saw him about a dozen times, mostly between 1978-84. He had Bobby Torello on drums, double bass mayhem...a real power trio. Yes, he helped bring Muddy Waters to a new level of recognition and popularity, with a minimum of commercial concessions or false steps. He could have spent those years on his own career--the "Captured Live" album from just before that time, is quite energetic and good--or sitting on a veranda drinking cool beverages. Instead he helped out Muddy Waters, and didn't get much recognition for it for himself, outside of a small blues fanatic circle. from Wiki: "Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues legend Muddy Waters. After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums. '

    RIP Johnny Winter

He was a bit guitar hero of mine when I was learning guitar. Sad news indeed, RIP JW!

  14. playing vinyl...complete with the snaps and pops.
  15. That's what I was thinking, Charlie had drug problems when he was younger. I wonder if he was a bigger jerk than Ginger Baker or less of a bigger jerk than Ginger Baker? Doesn't matter, because I love the music.
  16. The golden age was when I was discovering music. It's a subjective, personal thang. By the '80s there's a bunch of bands where I only like the first or second albums. Right now, it sucks having to drive a car that only has a working radio. I need tires first.
  17. I miss Sam Rivers too. Charlie isn't on this album, but it's a great album.
  18. Another strong point, but one where we might diverge slightly. It wasn't until Echoes that I thought they competently established a sense of mood. Pretty much all of the extended workouts before that seemed to meander to their detriment. I'm willing to review and reconsider, but the live stuff on Umma Gumma, for example, just seemed like a band lost in the wilderness desperately searching for a way out. I don't think the live album on Ummagumma is necessarily the band playing at its best; listen to the Fillmore West concert from April 1970 or one of The Man & The Journey concerts, this was definitely not "a band lost in the wilderness desperately searching for a way out." But after 1973 the concerts gradually became more scripted, predictable affairs. And by the time you got to Animals, the magic was rapidly draining from the studio work too. I think so too.
  19. I know where Chuck is coming from. I was never a record store employee, but I listened to a lot of radio until the mid-'80s and got really burned out of a lot of classic rock. I just get sick of hearing the same shit over and over again
  20. There's a DownBeat interview from 2008 that's been floating around my apt the last few weeks, I've been reading it here and there, two or three times. So this is shock, I know he hasn't been in good health the last few years. I expected him to be around a while, even if he wasn't playing much anymore. RIP.
  21. For some people, it's much more than that. It's called energy.
