  1. How did I miss this? Bookmarked.
  2. He lectures at Princeton too.
  3. Nice thread drift.
  4. My thoughts also, don't want to be in a movie theater with a bunch of people trying to recapture the supposed feel of a Zep concert -- been there, done that, back in the 70s. No way that feel will ever come back, it was almost an act of rebellion to attend one of their concerts back then (well, as teenagers, at least we thought it was). Will by the DVD though.... I literally don't have the time. Anyway, I saw the the original Song Remains the Same at the Zigfield Theatre in NYC when it came out. It was a party.
  5. Isn't Chick on this also?
  6. I'm looking forward to a DVD, no time for the movie house.

    John Abercrombie

I agree, that's four albums with Feldman on 'em.

    John Abercrombie

My favourite Abercrombie in a while. I have mixed thoughts about the new one. It's a retrospective and he didn't write the tunes, so it's really different from a typical ECM album by Abercrombie. He's quite a prolific composer.
  9. That's what I thought, both bands were happening at the same time.
  10. The big rumor going around is that this concert is finally going to be released. It HAS to be true! the Led Zeppelin Facebook page is counting down each day right now, with two more days to go. If it's on the internet, it has to be true, right? Maybe Jimmy "Mr-take-all-the-freakin'-time-to-remaster-anything-to-your-insane-standards-until-no-one-gives-a-darn-anymore-that-it's-coming-out" Page is finally happy with the DVD quality. It's about fucking time. Actually it's in time for the holidays.

    Ralph Towner

I heard Oregon play@Birdland, NYC last week. It's the first time I've heard Towner play live and I was pretty thrilled, I wish I stayed for the second set. I wish he played more guitar, he also plays keyboards. I enjoyed myself anyway, the band was great. It was first time I’d heard Towner live. If only he’d perform more solo gigs in the states!

    John Abercrombie

I heard Abercrombie play with Lavano, Gress and Nussbaum at Birdland, NYC a few weeks ago and I'm glad I did. I keep up with the albums but it's been years since I've been out to hear the man. Great show, they were playing tunes from his latest ECM album Within A Song.
  13. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just have a couple that I never play.
  14. I've been there, now I have too many guitars.
  15. There were a lot of live broadcasts from My Father's Place. The Bruford Tapes was recorded there.
  16. Indeed. I work pretty frequently at 49th and 6th; if I have 15 minutes to kill, where am I going to kill 'em now? (reference: my 300 visits to Colony) Rudy's? Manny's? S'pose. Manny's has been owned by Sam Ash for years, I think they're going with the other Sam Ash stores to one big store a few blocks (10?) south. The neighborhood's going to hell, are there even any live sex shows left in Times Square any more?
  17. I wonder where that stockpile of more than 1 million vinyl records is going. Maybe Princeton Record Exchange will buy it. I'll miss this store, after Sam Ash moves out, I guess that's the end of the neighborhood.
  18. Exactly what I was thinking.
  19. Sept 17? I guess we'll find out soon enough.

    Anthony Braxton

I believe there were three box sets released eventually - 2 4-disc sets, and a 6-disc one. That's a whole lot of standards! I enjoy them all immensely though, and I rate Kevin O'Neill very highly as a guitarist. Some of Braxton's horn choices don't quite come off in my book as the intonation is a little off pitch - most noticeable in the heads. YEAH! Makes for a very twisted interpretation of the material, reminds me of Sun Ra or Marshall Allen. I think it's intentionally microtonal. I dunno m'man. Have you ever read the comments on an Indian Classical Music video on Youtube? You'll have somebody arguing that Ravi always played out of key, then someone else saying 'but ICM operates under the sruti (22 notes to the octave) system, so it's not your standard tuning, and the response to that is - No, you don't understand - he's not doing it right.' Much as I love these sets - and I do, listen to them frequently in fact - but he's sloppy on several. E.g. on Blue Turk A La Ronda (20 Standards) he is just totally out of step with Kevin. Having said that I love this stuff. Kevin may repeat some ideas and whatnot, but they're great ideas. Also - @craig - you have to remember these were played live, not in the studio - i.e. not initially intended for release. In a live setting a lot of musicians (even the great ones) will resort to favourite licks. To be honest I think you're being a bit harsh on him. Me???

  22. Don't know, I'm wondering myself. I can't even find anything on Amazon about this release!
  23. I love the Solstice album, one of my first ECM purchases. Back to our Sleeper, these quotes are from the ECM page.
  24. According to this link, it's the same as the Ryko version. http://www.gandsmusic.com/ZappaCD1.htm So I found out. I'll probably give it away to a friend.
