  1. Those drawings are very cool. A lot of history packed into each drawing.
  2. Baker Bowl was a bit before my time but I went to Shibe Park a few times; my cousin is a Philly fan. My first baseball game and first Mets game was at the Polo Grounds. It was huge!
  3. I believe it was poorly maintained but that's just a guess. I wonder how much money owners invested in maintenance and upkeep in those days.
  4. Excellent article that hits it in a nutshell. As Robert Caro pointed out in his great book, Moses did more to negatively impact NY than any other person of the last 100 years. However, Brooklyn was changing as a lot of people were leaving for the suburbs and the borough just couldn’t sustain the team anymore.
  5. An under appreciated artist. Junior Mance Happy Time (Jazzland)
  6. No doubt about it. O’Malley was seriously hated for years, probably until his son sold the team. However, Ebbets Field was falling apart. He had to do something. In addition, the demographics of Brooklyn were changing and the crowds weren’t what whey they used to be. The halcyon days were over.
  7. I have the Japanese mini lp version and it’s odd because the sessions as compared to the liner notes are in inverse order. Sonny Stitt and the New Yorkers (from the Mosaic set)
  8. Crest or Colgate? Jim, I essentially agree with your points. He’s a nice player but no Sonny, etc. but how many people are. It’s like saying so and so is no Mays or Mantle. No kidding. Guys like that and players like Sonny or Hank come along a generation. However, there’s a place for others too without inviting comparisons to people in the pantheon.
  9. I, too, get tired of the criticisms of Alexander. I enjoy his playing. Does every artist have to be inventing or expanding the musical universe to be deemed praiseworthy?
  10. They’re considered classic cards in the pantheon of baseball cards.
  11. Too bad for the Brewers. If they win the second game, who knows?
  12. I hate to say it but Jeffress strikes again. Brewers have their work cut out for them.
  13. Bill Evans Another Time
  14. Real Madrid are in a horrible slump and haven’t won in a month or so. They aren’t scoring although they finally scored one in a loss at home today to Levante. The manager is not long for this world.
  15. I think tonight will be the Brewers' night. Even though the networks would love to see LA, the Brewers would be a great story, plus they were the best team in the NL this year.
  16. Fascinating essay in Believer Magazine about Bill Evans and “Nardis.” It may take awhile to load but it’s worth the wait. Broken Time
  17. Based on a couple of the above photos, Prestige was a distributor for Mercer but a distributorship doesn't necessarily mean ownership. Based on what I’ve been able to find it was a short lived label (about two years, 1950-1952) with a small output.
  18. Cora singled out a commentator on MLB Network for ripping David Price as a terrible post-season pitcher. That person was Evan Roberts of WFAN in NY, who co-hosts a daily show between 10-1. He’s trying to get Cora to come on this morning. He’s talking about it on Twitter, @EvanRobertsWFAN, and fans of other teams are asking him to rip some of their players.
  19. In my opinion, he wasn’t sounding good when he performed at Citifield a few years back.
  20. It’s one of the few Marianos I have. Need to pull it out.
  21. Pretty soon both teams will have been in California longer than in NY. Both teams were established in 1883 so they played 75 years in NY and have played 61 years so far in California. The people who remember them playing in NY is dwindling. Although my Mother was a Giants fan and my Father a Dodger fan and I was born in 1950, because we lived overseas in the 50s I never saw them play in NY, except against the Mets in the 60s.
  22. I think a 78 era set would be great but I can’t see Concord doing it or their licensing Mosaic to do it.
  23. Initially, yes. People hated O’Malley and the Dodgers because they left but over time it became obvious that they had no choice; the city didn’t believe them and didn’t offer them attractive stadium options. Some poor souls became Yankee fans but most continued to follow the Giants and Dodgers from afar until the Mets came into being and most became Mets fans. The heritage of the Dodgers and the Giants are reflected in the Mets caps: Dodger Blue and the Giants “NY” logo The Giants also have a following as well and after recent Giants WS championships, some of the Giants have come to NY to meet with old followers.
