Carla Bley in the New Yorker

Something he and Mozart may have had in common. -
Here’s another terrific article by Lewis Porter (with clips) that was on WBGO in April on his Deep Dive series how Walter Page wasn’t afraid to depart from the walking bass line. Walter Page

Disc 1. I found out about this great set through this thread.

That list from Edmund Wilson above reminds me of a letter I received in college from my Mother when I had not written in awhile. She sent me a checklist on how I was doing, asked me to check off the applicable box and return it. The point was made

There’s a moderately extended discussion about him in Talkbass.com. See Teddy Kotick

I hadn’t looked at Amazon Uk so will check it out. Thanks.

Great read. The Last Days of Time Inc. When I was growing up overseas, Time was my link home and I devoured it. Same for Sports Illustrated. Sadly, they're no longer vital in our Information Age. The account of they're being taken over by Meredith reminds me of when my company was taken over.

No basements in California (at least Orange County). Property is expensive enough.

Well, good luck. I’ve never been to an opera but should try it sometime (bucket list, I suppose). Hope it’s a great experience.

I thought I posted this last night but didn't see it. Anyway, you might find this a good read about Jimmie Lunceford: Jimmie Lunceford: A Musical World Unto Himself

LF Los Angeles Jazz Institute (LAJI) CD
Brad replied to Stonewall15's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I stand corrected! Do you have a complete list. -
Quicksilver, which I think is out of business now, issued a few great jazz records, this being among them, plus Mad About Tadd, by Continuum, which is a fabulous record.

It’s entirely up to you how you want to approach it and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that’s plan because it’s your plan. On the other hand, I’ve found that listening to one musician may lead you down a different path than you had planned. You might be on I 95 and all of a sudden you exit for a reason and next thing you know you’re on Route 301.

That's the issue, so to speak, you can't do it in one easy step. It's "paralysis by analysis."

LF Los Angeles Jazz Institute (LAJI) CD
Brad replied to Stonewall15's topic in Offering and Looking For...
From the LJI website, it looks like they've issued 10 CDs but only four of them are available. The $50 membership sounds like a good idea. Please let us know how you make out. -
As Big Beat Steve noted: "The inevitable fate of a recommendation thread like this where eventually every band imaginable will get mentioned." So many suggestions are noted that the information, although proferred in the desire to help, becomes useless. Sensory overload. It's comparable to searching the web for something and getting umpteen thousand hits, none of which answer the question. It's hand throwing up time.
