  1. Yes, extremely satisfying to see Chelsea go out. He acted like a fool when they recently won - yawn - the League Cup.
  2. Just finished up watching Peaky Blinders, an outstanding series. My son and I are now watching The Strain.
  3. When I was in high school in Barcelona, there was a kid who used to open a coke bottle with his teeth. He wasn't the brightest guy around, to point out the obvious.
  4. That is a quote from one of those responding to the article. Just what the hell does the sentence I bolded mean? That it's not enough to go and listen to the music. If so, that's a commentary on the people of today who feel they need to be involved in the experience.
  5. RIP Anthony Mason, Mase. He was part of the heart and soul of the Knicks in the 90s, a scrappy, tenacious player who was a lot like the city he was from and played. He was a heck of a player in his five years with them. Only 48, too young to go.
  6. RIP, a legend, an iconoclast.
  7. Live Long and Prosper. Part of out youth is gone.
  8. Some guy who was complaining that he was tired of jazz. Didn't catch his name.
  9. I always liked Tuesdays as a release day, particularly as it coincided with the release day for books.
  10. I'd like to think that some of these non-jazz recordings helped pay the bills but I can't imagine Alice or Linus contributing to the bottom line, but what do I know.
  11. My first intro to Trane was My Favorite Things and I was hooked. As someone said, it depends on your target audience. If they don't like Favorite Things, they may not like Trane.
  12. I think some are over analyzing some of these songs, trying to see in them what they would like. In the case of It's My Party, a girl by the name of Judy Gottlieb (now Solash and living in NC), who was 16 and living in Brooklyn in 1963 , was having a Sweet 16 party. Her parents informed that her grandparents had to be invited. Judy Gottlieb burst into tears, and her father said, "Don't cry. " She, of course, answered: "It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to." Her father, Seymour, was a part time song writer and wrote the lyrics. He gave the lyrics to to his songwriting partner, Herbie Wiener, who in turn passed them onto someone else. He then heard Gore singing the song on the radio and contacted Weiner and they agreed to share Wiener's royalties from the song. From an article I read, the family is still receiving royalty checks. As to when she realized she was gay, I saw an article saying that she said it wasn't until her 20s.
  13. Unintentional or not, I think she was proud of You Don't Own Me and that it had been recorded by others. Some people here may not like Quincy Jones but she certainly did.
  14. Did you ever read his first one about the War in North Africa? That was quite good.
  15. Can't say that I did. Madrid won 2-0 and will probably advance as the first leg was in Germany. Marcelo hit a cracker of a goal to seal the victory.
  16. The Times had a nice article about her, how she was a feminist and how her songs or some of her songs reflected that point of view.
  17. It doesn't get much better than Live at the Blue Hour.
  18. Amen to that.
  19. If you haven't listened to any Three Sounds, well, those are a must, if you like Gene Harris. There's also Stanley Turrentine and The Three Sounds. Just great music. Dan Gould is the Gene Harris expert here. He can give you more recommendations than anybody else.
  20. He's an idiot. This is all par for the course.
  21. Time to get this thread going again. An absolutely appalling display of football today by Real Madrid against their cross town rivals. Admittedly, they have some major injuries but the result and effort was no excuse.
  22. He's a complete dope. I would trust the other three way before him.
  23. Reactions to antibiotics is possible as it was one of my contributing causes. I also recommend wearing ear muffs or other protective covering in extremely cold weather.
  24. I never listened to music particularly loud but I did get a lot of colds and one day the sound didn't go away. At first, I thought I was going to go out of my mind but over time, it both subsided a little bit and I got used to it so it's more like background noise for the most part. I don't hear as well as I used to, however. It seems to get worse when a new weather pressure system comes in, which also results in headaches (which seem to be a by product of tinnitus). Definitely avoid alcohol when you can, particularly when it's really bothering you. Otherwise, I drink in the same quantity as before. The best piece of advice is try to not to focus on it. When I first got it, my boss told me that his father had it as a result of being in WW II but that it became background noise over time. That was the best piece of news I had heard and so I pass it onto you in the hope that it helps a little bit.
  25. Maybe it's time has come
