Hmm, Lee sort of looks different

I'm a day late and a dollar short (many actually) but happy birthday to a great person from somebody who's almost got 5 years on you.

At the Organ is a great cd except for Slightly Monkish. I don't think it works and it certainly doesn't fit in with most of the songs on the record, which is why I think Alfred probably left it off the original issue.

Tell me why I should get the Buddy Rich set?
Brad replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I have to agree with Hans on this one, probably backtracking on what I said before, but of the records I've heard of his, he just dominates the session, ruining them. The liner notes for the last Diz Bird date are revealing because they talk about how Rich was a curious choice for that session since he didn't fit in at all with the rest of the musicians. This is an odd choice for a Mosaic, in retrospect. -
I plead guilty to not having Volumes 1 and 2

Been listening to the Jimmy Smith. Now, I've never heard any prior version but it sounds good to these ears, plus great music (my first time hearing it).

It's the first time I looked at any blog but this looks interesting, sort of musings. I will check it daily from now on.

Apple sells this little base that you plug the ipod into and then the speakers go into the base. It sounds good to me and works just fine.

As far as I'm concerned quite a lot, actually, like for instance the Rich, Tyner, the Jazz Crusaders, and one or two others. ← I can see your perspective, although not necessarily agreeing. I would probably wait on the Williams, possibly the Tyner but might give the Rich a ride although the problem is his domination of sessions. I'll probably hold on the Crusaders until I hear a few cuts of the web site but everything else looks pretty interesting and all in all it's a very compelling group of releases coming out. Top of the list for me will be the Berry, the Mulligan and the Jazz Trios.

No hope for this one, Brownie unless Martha Glaser has either a change of heart or a change of address. Jaffa might update us on the next Classics release- 1953. ← Let's not hold our breath on this one, unless you want to do it for several years.

Got four of them today: Jimmy Smith, Oblique, Time for Tyner and Think. Listening to 'em later.

As Mr. Jones might have said, it's not unusual to love Dizzy or Lorraine

What forecast? That just went out the window, man. Now, I don't feel so bad about passing up the O'Day set because there are some serious sets that I will be picking up or getting as presents. At the top of my list in the scheduled releases will be the Jazz Piano Trios although if truth be told I'll want to buy everything else. Not sure about the Rich, but what the hell, I'll probably ante up. On the future projects, what is there not to buy?

Lex is in for the royal "welcome" Organissimo treatment

I saw Stealth this weekend and it's not that good or believable about a runaway jet fighter that is run by a computer where the Navy Brass calls the computer's inventor and you see him putting down an lp of Monk Alone. I think I was the only one in the theater to see that and get excited. My son and nephew looked at me like I was nuts.

I'd like to get the Anita (and I've been mulling this over) but I am not a huge vocals fan. Now, if somebody said I had to have a cd or two, I could probably buy those but 9 cds, that's just too much. I may regret it but we have to make choices sometimes and I'll just have to pass.

I may be in the same box money wise with all you guys. I may miss out on this one. -
July '05 Mosaic Running Low & Last Chance
Brad replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Wow, only 100 left, that's pretty amazing. That means they sold 120 in a day. Mosaic must like when it's last chance. That's when they sell a lot. -

Which set?? I'm losing track! ← O'Day Set. -
Six hours is incredible but I can't believe that could happen. It has to go to a central facility in the state from where it's being shipped to another where it's being received and then out to you. For adjoining states, one day is the norm. 6 hours, I find hard to believe.

That pickin' up Nomo has gotta to be the dregs. What's his ERA? 6.5. Sheesh.

July '05 Mosaic Running Low & Last Chance
Brad replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I just called Mosaic and they said there are 220 sets left. They figured (with the usual disclaimers ) that this supply should be good for a couple of weeks. -
Anybody seen that Amy/Bolton? Would love to see/hear that one! How ironic that this gets mentioned. Just last night I started to do some audio transfers of videos borrowed from a board member, and the first one I wanted to hear was the Amy/Bolton tape. I was doing it into the computer so I wasn't even looking at the video (yet) but judging from the audio signal, the source was in pretty good shape. Here are the details: 1) Summertime 2) Katanga 3) Laura (Bolton feature) 4) Blues for Amy 5) theme Curtis Amy, tenor sax Dupree Bolton, trumpet Dolo Coker, piano Ray Crawford, guitar Victor Gaskin, bass Ronnie Selico, drums Date is given as the 60s, but I noticed that the host mentioned that "Tippin on Through" was the current release by Curtis Amy, so that would help narrow the date down (not sure but I think that was about 1966?). ← If anybody's looking for this, why not get the Amy Select; it's got that and a lot of other great music.

I can't say I'm all that familiar with them so before I invest $100, how would you describe their sound, especially as it evolved in this set until 1970? Is it soul jazz or more geared toward lighter, breezier stuff?
