What is this Blue Note Perfect Takes? I note it's not issued by Blue Note by Angel.

Do We Even Need Jazz Critics?
Brad replied to medjuck's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
As someone who has been listening to jazz for less than 10 years (which I guess makes me a newbie in this thread), I generally subscribe to what wolff generally said. I know what I like and I don't like. However, critics do help and have helped to guide me, as Dan Morgenstern said. What he said about guiding the listener and to make the listener aware of what to listen for and why they're listening to is the essence of it all. I would also what they're listening as well. To guide is the most important. I think Larry does this well in his job and that is why I find liner notes and analyses (esp. of the Mosaic type) important. That is why I pay special attention to what he, Allen Lowe, Chuck and Jim S. have to say. The most important thing is not the what (that I can figure out myself) but the why and the context. -
Mosaic Columbia Small Group Swing Sessions
Brad replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Do you think I'd get special mention if I say I bought some cds from you once? It may not be spectacular to you Reinier but I'm impressed . Preordered this one also. There's no way like an expensive Mosaic to bring in the new year -
I can actually almost visualize Jimmy Rushing saying that.

Yes, it's true that this could be said of many artists that after that intial burst of inventiveness they put it on automatic pilot or at least stopped taking chances. Not an apology but sometimes 85% of somebody (Bird, Bud, Sonny Stitt, etc.) is a lot better than 100% of others.

I have every one of these but this may as fine a reissue list as I've seen. I may upgrade on many of these however and ebay what I have.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
Brad replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Monk Black Lion/Vogue set. I've had this for years but barely listened to it (can't tell you why). -
Well, you only have to worry about the Mobley, Parlan, Joe Pass and Django sets since the rest are OOP and since only Mobley and Parlan are BN, you only have to worry about those two. I'd go for the Mobley if you don't have the individual albums.

Do you have the Donaldson Mosaic. You might want to think about that.

Nothing for me either but you know today is Monday and new material doesn't come out until Tuesday. There are a few things coming out in the next couple of weeks but Alan reports that the Mosaic Columbia Swing Sessions are coming out on January 18. Maybe we're all hiding out until then.

I've been listening to Boss Tenor and thought this would be a good time to resuscitate this thread.

Cab Calloway? It sounds like the kind of derogatory comment he'd make about bop. If not him, maybe Louis. He wasn't big on bop either. Didn't he call it "chinese music."

I'm a day late but hope it was good. A double for you every year. That's kind of cool.

Paul, The Junior Cook/Blue Mitchell cd has been one of my favorites for years. I highly recommend it. You can't get more hardbop than this album. It's just fantastic. The Barry Harris and the George Wallington cds on OJC are also can't misses. I'm less excited about the Walter Bishop but it's ok.

I've been selling a lot lately, mostly excess cds or things I probably won't listen to anymore, and other non-music items. As a seller, it is my job to post feedback before the seller although life being what it is sometimes this happens in reverse. However, I would never tell a buyer that I'll post it if you post it first. That's not the way it works. I've had sellers tell that to me and I won't leave them feedback. Besides letting other people know how a buyer pays or communicates, feedback also lets a buyer know when you shipped an item since I think most sellers usually post when they ship. That is what I try to do. I also use feedback to let other know if this person paid quickly for if you're a seller that's what you want to know.

I'm reading a whole bunch of things: Larry Kart's book Dan Morgenstern Living with Jazz The new annotated Sherlock Holmes collection John Le Carre's Absolute Friends Max Hasting's Armageddon. This is a continuation of Overlord, about D Day and looks at the war against Germany, 1944-1945. If you're at all interested in WWII, you should read this.

I believe the Parlan LP sold out because it was their last one. I have to Mosaic and it's relatively small. Most of the space is devoted to their warehousing and looks big to me. But there are carrying costs associated with carrying a large inventory and lets face it cds will move faster than lp so you want to move merchandise (whether its music, books, widgets, etc.) as quickly as possible to cut down on overhead. Mosaic is after all a profit enterprise. However, the Miles Davis material is still lps so they haven't given up on it completely. But then again Miles always sells.

Ditto on Stefan's question about a hard drive. Looking for recs here.

Skip the ASE. It doesn't, trust me.

I'd like to be able to buy less cds but I don't know if that's going to happen. However, I'd like to be more patient and calmer with my family since I'm not the most patient person in the world.

I can't remember everything that I got from him but it was one that I didn't get that was notable: The Montgomery Brothers' Groove Yard. I eventually managed to find a copy of this and it was worth it. One I did get was Bob Brookmeyer's the Ivory Hunters. Wonderful cd. Waiting for those Mondays or Tuesday for those offerings was a lot of fun. Better still was getting a cd he had. He sort of became an institution and as far as institutions go, you don't appreciate them until they're gone. He'll be missed for that as well as his presence of being part of this grand community.

Great article, especially the Pete Jolly cover. Another under appreciated talent like Reid Miles.

My thoughts exactly. Brings me back to my time there. You can really get into those photos.

Anyone heard of this station. I found it through iTunes and they've been playing some funky greazzzzy stuff.
