  1. Regarding Matthew's "rant", we should not bite the hand that figuratively feeds us and secondly we should give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure that many of us have listened to something at some point and called it garbage and when relistening to it later, said "hey's that pretty good stuff. What was I thinking?" I'm sure Michael's no different.
  2. F***ing Yankees is all I have to say. Sox better come back to Yankee Stadium up 3-2 or there's just no way they'll win. To live in the NY metro area and not to be a Yankee fan is no fun. The arrogance of the Yankee fan. They're all typical bullies. The really arrogant ones are nowhere to be found after a Yankee loss. They are the Evil Empire.
  3. This sounds like that theory years ago that you could get high by taking two aspirins with a coke (never actually tried it myself; that's the whole truth, dudes) .

    Don Lamphere RIP

I don't have a lot of his stuff, but check him out on one of those Prestige First Sessions. Not too many original beboppers left around. Very sorry to hear this.

    Carl Fontana RIP

I only have the Great Fontana and have, unfortunately, never checked out his other recordings. However, if that were the only thing he ever recorded, his reputation would have been cemented with just that one disc. The whole band is great on this date, especially Al Cohn and Richard Wyands. The first time I listened to this I couldn't believe how good this was. I believe this is hard to find but if you have the opportunity to get it, don't pass it up.
  6. Read it this morning. Very funny, especially about some of the incidents revealed on the tapes (he apparently made tapes of everything). Wonder what Chris thought about it. Didn't he know Mrs. Armstrong very well?
  7. I thought Moose was talking about me when he called me a pedophile. Or was that ax murderer? Or both
  8. I have the Sonic Boom TOCJ but to have a whole second session is worth picking up. I just haven't done it yet. The place I buy from which usually has them for $3 or $4 off didn't have them yet so I wasn't too happy. I wound up paying full price for Passing Ships and Mothership (not too happy, but got too much on my credit card; my wife might kill me).
  9. This was my first listen to it. Right now, I have a mixed review about it. But, I'll be listening to it again. It's probably one that requires repeated listening for appreciation.
  10. My point exactly.
  11. I'm not in the music business so perhaps the way music companies price things may make sense. I don't know. However, can somebody explain to me why a Blue Note sesssion that is reissued as a RVG is $11.98 while a connoisseur edition is $17.98. Yes, I know cd universe and others sell it cheaper. For example the RVG of Hank Mobley's Rollcall is $11.98 while the Flip is $17.98. Can somebody who's in the business explain this. To me, it makes no sense, unless Conns sell better than RVGs (although I think you'd be buying the artist and not the edition, if that's the case).
  12. Mr. Menace, Didn't see it but could double check. They said they might have more in the back.
  13. Rooster, It's Tuesday in the east. Just a few more hours to go!!
  14. Here's hoping the BoSox beat the Yanks (it's the only thing a Mets fan can look forward to at this point). I'd love to see those f'in arrogant Yankee fans eat a little crow.
  15. Jeff, Just sent you a PM. Brad
  16. That strikes me as a pretty lame excuse and now those 15 seconds are now apparently lost to history, which is a pity. On one level, 15 second out of a five album set would not that significant a loss. In my view, this is certainly not a reason not to buy the set. I don't have the TOCJ and frankly can't see buying it if I could for those 15 seconds. On another level, it's pretty lame that the master has that defect in it. As someone noted, this could be a problem for many masters in the future, with constant remastering for this edition or that edition. I wonder in what condtion Blue Trane is in.
  17. Thank you all again. It's really cool to see people you know do this. It's pretty heart warming, I've got to say. We have a great community here. I did get the Patton and only had time so far to listen to Along Came John. What a great session. Patton and Grant do seem to have a special thing together. Fred Jackson and Harold Vick are just the icing on the cake .
  18. Well, thank you very much everbody. I somehow never knew they put this at the bottom of the page. I guess I'm getting on but from a jazz point of view I'm still a babe in the woods. I'm hoping for the Patton Select later today and the trick, as Dan puts it, is to have the time to enjoy or listen to it. But thanks again and to all the great people on this Board and B-3er, a big thanks!
  19. Whereas some remastering might help some live music that is good in essence but just need some sprucing up to bring out, as Tony say, its nuances, the problem with the Cookers is that the music is not very good to begin with. That's why it's a stinker. In my view, no amount of remastering could help these records. I'm selling the copies I have now and have no interest in making the same mistake twice. For somewhat of an extended discussion, see this Forum.
  20. I tend to agree. The organ stuff is just fine however, I prefer Grant In A Ballad/Standards mode. Different strokes... Dude, try to listening to some albums and maybe you'll get an idea. Where should we start: how about the Complete Quartets with Sonny. It Ain't Necessarily is one the most incredible sounds I've ever heard. Where should we go next: Idle Moments, Street of Dreams, Talkin' About (those three just are out of this world), I Want to Hold Your Hand, Solid, Sunday Morning. Should we go on or is that enough. Taking nothing away from anybody else, but there's a reason people make a fuss about him, why people demanded (not asked) that his first session be issued.
  21. One more point. Do we really Night of the Cookers. This wasn't worth being issued, let alone reissued, in the first place. How about some of the older BN stuff. I recently picked up as a lucky find Sal Salvador Quintet/Quartet on JRVG. That's a great cd. Or even Wynton Kelly's Piano Interpretations. That hasn't seen the light of day in a loooooong time.
  22. This is truly a very nice list. There's at least half of them I don't probably have and a few like Sweet Honey Bee that could use a sonic upgrade (although that's less of a few priority). There's also a few like Prayer Meeting, the Half Notes and Going West that I expect to receive next week from Hiroshi. I guess the joke's on me in that regard. Looks like it could be the beginning of an expensive year.
  23. I came across a bunch of JRVGs yesterday in a local record shop that I sometimes go to. They are $19.99. If anybody is interested, I'll pick them up for you. Just PM me. Shipping is $1.75, plus 6% NJ sales tax. Total would be $22.94. They are not sealed. I'm not offering to do this to make any money, just a convenience for people who might want them. If there's interest I'll pick them all up at once and you can send me the money when I have them. These are the titles I remember seeing: XXXX = Reserved Fred Jackson Hootin and Tootin Horace Parlan Us Three Cannonball's Something Else Baby Face Willette Face to Face Arthur Taylor's A.T.'s Delight XXXX Dolphy's Out to Lunch Kenny Dorham's Cafe Bohemia (vol. 1, I believe) John Patton's Along Came John Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin Horace Silver's Doing the Thing XXXX Sonny Red's Out of the Blue Tina Brooks' True Blue XXXX Herbie Hancock's Empyrean Isles Jimmy Smith's Midnight Special Kenny Burrell On View at the Five Spot XXXX Grant Green's The Latin Bit Wayne Shorter's JuJu Lou Donaldson Wailin With Lou XXXX Freddie Hubbard Open Sesame Kenny Dorham Afro Cuban Freddie Redd's Shades of Redd They also had from the VICJ series Rollins Plays for Bird Roy Haynes We Three (I have this and it's great!) Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane And Sonny Stitt The Champ and John Hicks Trio
  24. I just took a look at all the JRVGs on Amazon. Man, those are some heavy duty price. The J.R. Monterose is almost $50! Damn. Thank god I have it.
  25. Lon, You're totally right about being a marvel. I'm not a guitarist but it sounded to me like he did things that are hard to surpass. I think it's about time that I pick up some of his recordings which I haven't listened to in a long time. What also struck me from the Cavett interview, aside from the points you mention, was how humble he was. That's one thing you don't usually get from rock stars. But no matter how Dick tried, Hendrix wouldn't take credit for being the best.
