  1. Just added two Thelonious Monk Cds and a John Hicks Trio cd. Let me know if interested.
  2. The Jazz Review, the British jazz journal which I think is the best magazine around has been having a special offer for several months (it changes each month) for new and current subscribers. This month you can buy two proper sets for 25 Pounds, which is not a great savings, but it's ok. It translates into about $42. I'm not sure how much shipping is to the US but it's probably not extravagant. The number to call is 0131 467 34660. If interested in subscribing, you can email them at jazzreview@excite.com No, I don't work for them. But it's a very good magazine and this is a good offer. This applies to 49 proper boxes, like the new Stitt, Beiderbecke, Slim Gaillard that Lon recently reviewed, Johnny Hodges, Bebop Spoken Here, Charlie Ventura, Illinois Jacquet, etc.
  3. If you like Byrd and Pepper, you might enjoy Pepper's 10 to 4 at the Five Spot, which is easily available as an OJC. It an often complaint, but Pepper doesn't get enough attention. There's a reissue on Quicksilver, which you can obtain directly from their web site, which is really vintage Pepper called Urban Dreams. Any Pepper in my book is worthing checking out. And if you can also get your hands on the Pepper Adams Quartet on Mode, that's a definite keeper as well.
  4. I have all of his BN stuff except Preach Brother, and also have Texas Twister. Shoutin is my favorite of the BN stuff. The reason I don't have Preach Brother is just that it did nothing for me. I thought it was the weakest of his output and Sonny Clark seemed out of place to me. The best, but not BN, is Texas Twister. Great cd.
  5. Get this box! You'll never regret it. There are sessions with Bill Watrous that I love, as well as a session with Milcho Leviev and Jack Sheldon where they do Night and Day that is just superb; I've never heard it better. Plus there are two sessions with Sonny Stitt. The only downer were the liner notes by Art's wife. I didn't think they were very informative. But that's a really minor complaint. There is really some great music here.
  6. I think their necessity to sign the free agents you mentioned is probably the reason they did it. But I'm wondering if they did it to send a message to Manny. I mean they could have told teams, GM to GM, that they'd like to do a deal, without doing it so publicly. I mean how many teams are going to submit a waiver claim. The amount of teams who could do are very small. Whereas, if they trade him, they'll probably have to eat some salary. Ghost, I think the Yankees probably need a lot. They're going to have to get a couple of starting pitchers, a third baseman (Boone's awful, in my book; I'd send him packing), a right fielder and relief help to get them to Mariano (of course, everybody needs that). There's been some talk around of moving Boone to second and signing Tejada or getting ARod for third and moving Soriano to right field or center field. They probably won't get ARod; the Rangers are looking for pitching and Yanks have none to give. As for my team, the Mets, on second thought, let's not go there . Their needs are great and I don't see any quick fixesl, although Fred Wilpon says he wants to be a playoff contender next year. Yeah, and I'd love to play like Bird
  7. All I can say to that is "Damn, you did have a hell of a day." Way to go
  8. Today: Yeah, let's all drive to Chuck's House! Tomorrow: Chuck, you home? Chuck, aren't you going to answer the door. Strange, the place looks like Chuck went on vacation.
  9. Bud Powell - Scene Changes Presenting Ernie Henry Junior Mance - Blues Groove Shelley Manne and His Men - Yesterdays Wes Montgomery Boss Guitar
  10. What Kenny said but when you order that box, you might also want to get the Proper box Bebop Spoken Here, since if you like the Bird box, you'll want to know more about that era.
  11. So far, it looks like I'm the one from the forties. I didn't get hit with the bug until 4 years ago. When I was a kid back in the 60s, I listened of course to a lot of Stones, Beatles, etc., anybody who was popular at the time. At the same time, becuase we lived overseas and I didn't have access (or the money) to a lot of records, I listened to a lot of my parent's records, which was lot of Broadway material, tin pan alley and of course classical. I knew the show tunes (Pajama Game, West Side Story) backwards and forwards. Anyways, as the 70s approached and I went to college, I was getting bored with some of the 70s stuff I was hearing. Rock was losing a bit of meaning for me and because I loved some of the early Stones (their later stuff didn't do that much for me), I started looking into the blues. Fast forward into the 80s I was listening more heavily into the blues but by the time the mid 90s came around I was getting bored with its sameness although I still loved Howlin' Wolf. One day I was reading a magazine article about Duke and I had never really listened to jazz and since I was bored with the blues, I bought a couple of things: Duke, Bird and maybe something else. I liked it and one day went to the local record store and picked up the RVG of Moanin'. When I heard Moanin' it was like my head exploded and the rest is history.
  12. I think you guys (except the former GHF, of course) are somewhat off base on this. This is a very good date. I'm glad to have gotten the 2 cd version. It's very mellow and bluesy but it is "the Blue Hour". I've played this over and over and have enjoyed the heck out of it. Even if you don't like the Sounds, Gene Harris is great here. I love GH Plus One but for my money this is a wee bit better. I had the old one cd version but go the 2 cd version as soon as it came out. Willow Weep for Me is to kill for .
  13. I, too, like this one. It seems that EMI is starting to slowly reissue what was on the Mosaic Basie Roulette studio. Here's a link to a discussion of the Count Basie reissue as well as some others from earlier this year.
  14. Happy Birthday from one nut to a bigger nut . What's on the Catesta wish list?
  15. Red, Does that mean you're a Liverpool fan. Did you see the article awhile ago in 442 that really is no rivalry between Man U and Arsenal because Arsenal is a johnny come lately but that the real rivalry is Liverpool and Man U?
  16. For me, whether it's Soul Jazz Lou or Hard Bop, it doesn't matter. He sounds great in any context, and I'm not sure he sounds all that different. You can tell it's Lou. I don't know about comparing Cannonball and Lou but comparing Lou with Jackie Mac just seems strange. They're totally different. Now if you want to say who do you prefer, that seems an ok question. But then again I like them both at different times.
  17. Hold on there double M. You misunderstood what I was saying. This was to Ghost's earlier point in which he more or less said that he didn't see the players as obnoxious and I agree with him. Torre seems like the manager any team would want to have and I wouldn't mind having him back. Doesn't mean I'm going out to try to buy him. I also happen to like Jeter and Bernie as players. However, they are Yankees and should stay as Yankees. I couldn't see them in any other uniform, frankly. However, pennants can be bought. George does a good job of that usually, although I would be less than objective if I didn't recognize that most of his important players are home grown. You can now return to your Yankee lovin's ways
  18. I finally got around to listening to this and, while the sound is very good, the music blows me away. Cleopatra's Dream is one of the more interesting melodies I've heard in a while and what he does with the improvisiations is just amazing to me. In similar vain is Duid Deed. One of the more unusual compositions is Comin Up. The way he sets it up with AT starting out and then Bud and Chambers adding layers, I found fascinating. And AT's work on this one piece is what makes the piece. Also, AT's work really drives Bud. This is my favorite out of this batch of RVGs. It's really a remarkable album.
  19. What about King Ubu
  20. Brad

    Jazz In Paris

I've got about 17 of these and ones I really enjoy consistently are the Don Byas ones, especially Bebop, and Sonny Criss. The sound, at least to me, is excellent, and the price darn reasonable. Amazon France ships reasonably quickly and has or has had these in stock (although shipping can be rather expensive). That is a very handy list to have. Thank you Roi Ubu
  21. I guess I'm with the King on this one as I didn't have any of these on vinyl previously. Just glad to have them, esp. the Sonny Stitt release. I know that Verve has recently released all of Bird's masters in a set but for those who might not want to buy a complete set, releasing a Verve LPR or digipack might be a neat idea.
  22. Just as a further aside, I'm also a soccer fan, especially of British football and I root for Arsenal which is a fierce competitor of Manchester United. This rivalry is akin to Red Sox-Yankees. While I enjoy British football, I don't begin to fully appreciate the deep rivalry that these two teams have. And it's deep and it's heated.
  23. Ghost, I respect your opinion in your musical matters. You're very knowledgeable there. But unless you've lived through these things like Dan has as a lifelong Red Sox fan or actually lived here in New York, I don't think you really understand the rivalry. Yes, the Yankees have some players that I like; I'd love to have Torre back as our manager and I like Jeter and what's not to like about Bernie. But there's a deep rivalry between the teams and the fans as well. And if you don't think Yankee haters aren't going to be gleeful about this loss, then you don't really understand what sports following is all about. Let me tell you, the glee that people feel about the Yankees losing is probably matched by the feeling that Cardinal fans have about the Cubs losing. That is a rivalry as intense as this one.
  24. Dude, most Yankee fans can't even tie their shoes or count to two
  25. Steinbrenner would never let the board operator post a congrats message. If that person did that, he'd be looking for work today. What conundrum. Of course success breeds contempt. Success also breeds arrogance. It's that arrogance that ticks off people. No kidding, they have their fans. I know a few nice ones but for the most part they're arrogant. That is why people delight in their losing. Steinbrenner only adds to this.
