Thank you all for your help. I forwarded this thread to my friend to send on. Thanks again for taking the time to help out.

Last night, after seeing some references to Tubby Hayes, I pulled out a Tubby Hayes and Dizzy Reece cd on Savoy, which I have to admit I had never listened to. I thought the tone was very similar to the New York Sessions. I plan on listening to this one closely tonight and have to see if I can pick the New York Sessions up as well as the ones Tony mentions. Well, I was half right on the Stuff Smith. I like this album and want to get it. Almost more so than Stuff, I was impressed with Rene Urtreger. Reminds me of Kenny Drew. I will look for this one. I have an Eddy Louiss on the Jazz in Paris series and since the theme was international players I wondered if it was him. I actually pulled it out but didn't play it. I found something offputting about it when I first listened to the cd I have and this cut. It's not like the organ players I'm used to hearing, John Patton, Baby Face, Larry Young, etc. Well, I have to listen to it again. I did not get Ponomarev. I have heard some of his stuff on the radio awhile ago and wanted to pick some up. But never got around to it. Beautifuly hard bop tone. Time to check it out. As with the others, Thanks Tony.

Somebody has put in bids for these. I recall he had a buy it now for $200 for the Basie. Too me, that's dumb. $200 is a great price for that set. He's also just put a couple of Davis sets (not Mosaic), In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew.

I emailed the seller and he says it includes everything and it's going so cheaply because he needs the money. If I didn't have them, I'd bite.

I voted for the Ford since I've never heard him but I'm ok with the Dickinson.

Tony, $74 is a good deal. I like the strings material, not all the time but mostly. There's no one who can liven up strings material like Bird. That tone just flows through the material to really liven it up. Plus, I love the JATP material, although that material's available elsewhere too. I especially like the material with Benny Carter in addition. Good discograpy although the notes aren't overwhelming.

The only problem with your request is that Kevin is boycotting this board so Michael may not get the request in time -
Very nice collection of jazz LP's on ebay

Noted but still concerned. It didn't stop me from bidding however. -
Like Relyes, I have beeen humbled. But that's ok, you can only learn when you realize when you know what you don't. Anyway, here goes: Track 1 - Don't really know. I'd guess Django, just because the recording sounds a little old. Track 2 - Only one I figured out on my own. Once again, thanks to Jim Rowan, he knows what I mean. Track 3 - Since you guys dropped so many clues, I was able to figure out. I have the cd. Now, that's embarassing. I know Lon and Tod Irzyk are big fans of this guy, especially Tod. He probably has all there is from him as a leader. Really enjoyed this. Track 4 - This must be a Gil Evans production. Just sounds like that to me. I certainly heard Miles in there, as well as Cannonball. Very unusual arrangement I have to say but liked it very much. Track 5 - My favorite on the whole disc. I have to have this. This stuff swings incredibly and his solo is out of this world. Be embarrasing if I have this. I'll bet I probably do. Track 6, 7 - No idea. Track 8 - I don't really care for violins but if ever an arrangement would change my mind, this is it. Really nicely done. I've got a sneaking suspicion that this is Stuff Smith's Hot Violins. Track 9 - No guess here. Track 10, 11 - I really love these Big Band arrangements. I don't know who it is however. I want to say Gerald Wilson on Track 10. If it is and it's from the Mosaic, that's on my Christmas wish list. Track 12 and 13 - Don't care for this. Found it annoying actually. Track 14 - No idea who this was until Daniel A made the posting. I'd like to get this cd. Really very nice. Again this is a great idea.

This should prove interesting

I voted for the second Yes. How do you say Yes in Russian? -

This looks like it bears some close inspection. The only thing that puts me off is that this seller seems to have a lot of high negatives. -
That's probably a good idea because for the most part I'm stumped. I have some guesses as to what some things are but don't have the same knowledge or level of experience as others. Plus, some of these tests I've seen in jazz mags usually have a before or after (altho I don't know if that after takes place after each song or after all of the songs).

A friend of a friend is going to London next week and has asked my friend for some recommendations of places to go. I can only think of Ronnie Scott although my friend mentioned that there's some pizza place that has live jazz. The person who's going is a piano student who has studied under Bruce Barth. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, I just received the cd today. Thanks Dan and Dr. J. I've only listened to the first 4. Have to say I'm pretty clueless. #2 I think is Curtis Fuller but it does have a hint of West Coast as somebody mentioned. #3 Don't believe it's Sonny or Stanley. Other than that, no ideas. However, I will study all posts seriously tonight. Whatever the result, it's fun.

Check out this Jazz Factory (Definitive Disconforme) rip off of the RVG: Horace Silver Trio.

I called Mosaic this morning to ask about these and the person I talked to said that they are now available for ordering (by telephone) and that they would up on the web site in the next few days. Shipment should be by the end of the month, just in time for my birthday

It's been years since I heard this and I actually don't have a copy (borrowed it from the local library at the time) but I'd give it a solid .

Sent you one also.

Anybody pick this up yet? I did on Friday and have enjoyed it tremendously, more so than I did in the theatre. They have previews of the expanded edition of the movie that's coming out in November as well as Return of the King, which I am really looking forward to. Speaking of these previews, if you plan on picking up the expanded edition, I'd probably not buy, but rent this DVD. Anyway, Wal Mart has it at a great price $15. Not bad.

I recently picked up the DVD of the Great Escape and put in a vote for his role as Danny, the claustrophobic tunnel digger, as one of his good, if not altogether major role.

I posted this over in the Reissues forum in the September thread but in case you didn't see it, CD Universe has this available for preorder, with a September 23 release date.

The Basie called America's Number One Band is now available for ordering at CD Universe, at a good price. Release date is September 23. Looks like September could shape up as a pretty cruel (cool?) month.

NO!!!!!! Grant Green's "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is absolute wonder. A lone Beatles cover done BEAUTIFULLY!!! Other than that, the titles are all straight ahead. One of the best organ albums ever made. GET THIS CD NOW!!!! Or forget about enjoying life. I actually have Grant's I Want to Hold Your Hand and agree with everything Soul Stream said. More so than Grant or Mobley, it's the playing of Larry Young on this album that grabs me. It's Reach Out that I was trying to see if it could be compared to, since I don't have that one. BTW, I wouldn't consider myself one of the "uninitiated", just wanted to know how Reach Out compares to it.
