  1. i always thought of the roll eyes's "smile" as more of a smirk. as such, it lets other people know i think the person i'm referring to is an idiot. at the same time, it elicits feelings of self-satisfaction that reinforce my underlying sense of superiority. naturally, i like it! B-) while we're on the subject, why do we have an angry black smilie with a 70's 'fro?
  2. mike, have you learned anything more about this show? last i heard, the date had not been finalized. thanks, rob
  3. WOW! thanks so much for the birthday wishes. i just got back from a family celebration. it was fun and all, but it's also nice to receive good vibes from people i have something in common with besides blood and intergenerational neuroses. happy new year to you all. and as far as analysis is concerned, freud, like most of us, had one thing on his mind.
  4. that's an understatement. i see copies of this title in every used cd store i visit.
  5. very sad news. i had the pleasure of buying cds from ken on many occasions. in fact, there are still a few 60-cent stamps on my bulletin board, stamps i used specifically to sent my payment to him in canada. one of the things i'll remember is feeling frustrated and disappointed when i "missed out" to another member on a title i wanted from him. i'd gladly feel those emotions again if it meant he were still here with us. rest in peace ken.
  6. not me. like my jazz collection, i seem to be constantly expanding!
  7. i really don't have a problem buying from another retailer. i trust that mosaic has received an acceptable wholesale price from them. my comment was prompted by the idea of saving only a couple of dollars by buying a used copy. again, i'd rather give mosaic my money. for me, it's an investment in mosaic's future, and in my future enjoyment.
  8. no thanks. for only a couple of bucks more, i can support mosaic by buying from them directly.

    Jay Thomas

you can purchase six of thomas's cds directly from the artist on his website. here's the link: jaythomasjazz. just click on "recordings" and choose from the titles on the left. unfortunately, the discovery disc is not one of the cds he has for sale. to get a used copy of that disc for between $5.75 to $8, go to: amazon
  11. in the judaochristian tradition that believes anything else is nonreligious and devoid of faith.
  12. hey, it's his prerogative!
  13. mike, do you have a link to this event? thanks, rob
  14. imo, he has a very small point, and the way it's expressed is over the top.
  15. is it me, or does anyone else prefer jazz t-shirts that don't have the artist's name emblazoned on the front? i know who kenny dorham is, and if someone doesn't, i'd rather they approach me and say, "cool shirt, who is that?" rather than seeing the name and say, "who is kenny dorham?" it's a small point i'll admit, it's just my preference. of course, the big reason (literally) i'll never order from these guys is that they don't carry size xxl. like my music, i like a little free space in my clothing. if i was into narrow constriction, i'd listen to pop. btw, who the hell buys a small?
  16. i think it depends on your definition of spiritual. a love supreme was coltrane's "gift to god." as such, it fits neatly within the narrow definition that something "concerned with sacred matters or religion or the church" is spiritual. i don't know if any of jugs's work was so explicitly spiritual in this sense. personally, it doesn't matter to me, because ammons was one of the most soulful tenor players i've ever heard, and that means a lot in my book.
  17. i have this on cd. it's excellent.
  18. there's a lot of talent in the steig family. their father is william steig, a best-selling author who one of the main cartoonists for the new yorker magazine. jeremy's two sisters are an artist and an actress. here's one of the father's cartoons. fyi, that's not jeremy playing the flute.
  19. mike, you might be interested to know that a good friend of mine is dating jeremy steig's sister. i've forwarded this thread to him. i think jeremy will feel good to know there are fans like you out there trying to get his recordings reissued.
  20. here's another for uptown christmas. i've enjoyed it for years and it makes an excellent holiday present.
  21. i'm sorry, but i can't condone this kind of meaningless violence. what we should do is take him out front and beat the crap out of him as lesson to others who might think likewise. now that would be meaningful!
  22. thanks to chuck and brownie for the info. and hans, thanks for just being you. B-)
  23. Can anyone help me with some details about the recording described below? Most importantly, there reportedly are three different band configurations on this record. I want to know who plays on which tracks. Also, if anyone has the recording dates (AMG says May 14-Jun 15, 1956), location, studio, engineer, etc., that would be great too. Thanks in advance. Jimmy Raney In Three Attitudes Paramount 167 Produced by Creed Taylor Partial list of Personnel: Al Cohn - tenor sax Bob Brookmeyer - trombone Jimmy Raney - guitar Hal Overton - piano Red Mitchell - bass Osie Johnson -drums (I believe the recording also includes Johnny Williams on piano, Whitey Mitchell on bass, and Jack Edie on drums) Tracks: so in love indian summer fanfare last night when we were young on the rocks passport to pimlico strike up the band up in quincy's room
  24. when i ask patients (both kids and adults) why they are prone to yell, most often they reply, "it's the only way they'll listen" or "it's either that, or i don't get heard." what i find interesting is the board's response (or lack of) to what is generally considered unacceptable internet behavior. in most porn chat rooms, a person gets booted for typing in caps. at least that's what i've heard. er, um...heh heh.
