  1. Willard Robinson songs done by Big Tea is a winning combination!
  2. Most days I actively enjoy her choices-particularly when we listen to Mississippi Fred McDowel, R.L. Burnside, or Mississipi John Hurt. But on the very rare occasion I will be exposed to the Beastie Boys, the Black Crows, or Pearl Jam and then I switch from appreciation to endurance.
  3. I was compiling a Calvin Massey playlist but stopped to listen to this in its entirety.
  4. A long time favorite-I spent close listening time with this one last week.
  5. Mrs. Duckworth likes some singers like Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Slim Gaillard and a few others. Her favorites are Matana Roberts, Alice Coltrane, Albert Ayler, and Jimmy Smith. When we first got together, she listened to every Miles Davis Columbia record in order which impressed me as I had never thought to do that. During pandemic I've leaned heavily on the "with strings" records (especially Ben Webster), ballad heavy records, and pianists like John Taylor so as to not to overwhelm the poor woman. She does tend to be pretty open to what I listen to and lets me know when she does not care for something.
  6. Thank you, Mr. Felser, I'm in. While I find the combination of Calvin Massey, Joe Lee Wilson, and Mr. Shepp very powerful on the trilogy-this later edition retains Joe Lee Wilson and Charles Greenlee and adds Malachi Thompson, Marion Brown, Steve Turre, and Shorty Jarvis's son Clifford on drums.
  7. So, I've been listening to these three records as a trilogy as suggested by Bill Shoemaker in his Jazz in the 1970's book. As a youngster, I didn't full appreciate the range of styles that Mr. Shepp employs on these records. I love gospel and R and B but wanted Fire Music from Archie. I now find these records engaging and very timely.
  8. This is an all-time favorite! Love the Leo Parker/Bill Jennings pairing.
  9. For some reason I find myself alternating between Ike Quebec and Archie Shepp this week.
  10. I had to listen to it again this morning and it is even better.
  11. Loving Hobart Dotson, and really getting with the hard boppin' John Gilmore!
  12. There are some stretches of solo work in the set, but what I tend to do is make playlists (e.g. The Early 40's Sextet). At any rate, it was through making a playlist that I was able to listen to that aspect of the set.
  13. Thank you so much for posting this-I was completely unfamiliar with this but was able to locate it for free online. This one is shaping up to be an all time favorite.
  14. Listened to the solo piano music from this box this morning.
  15. The four band tracks from Paris 1945 are here in good sound.
  16. I asked a friend who owned a record store, "how do you classify Joe Turner?" He replied, "Jump Blues." We both laughed at the silliness of shoehorning Big Joe Turner into a relatively restrictive category.
  17. The Great 16 and the Sidney Bechet/Muggsy Spanier 4 on one cd! Yeah!
  18. I've had this one for a while, but hadn't listened to it recently. Taft Jordan had a great tone! Thanks for posting this.
