That's nearly a century of playing drums from Charlie Parker to Andrew Hill and beyond. What a life!

Founded Quest Records, whose roster included Sonny Simmons and New Order. Wow. RIP.
-
Speaking of great runs, Joe Henderson's tenure at BN is an absolute treat. Think Dorham and Henderson had a great thing going on there.

I love that album cover! Don't have a record player though. Hence, waiting for the thrill of someone dumping one at a second-hand store (which is mostly where I found the lp covers on my walls).
-
Really, some pretty amazing records there. The Joe McPhee is a standout for me. Have it on cd, but if I came across the lp, that'd be on my wall the moment I got home.

Second to none, the coolest mancave ever.

Haven't been posting here in awhile (largely lurking) but I wanted to share what vinyl wall art I have on the wall: Some more.

Elvin Jones "Revival: Live at Pookie's Pub" 1967
Holy Ghost replied to Harbour's topic in New Releases
Just ordered, really looking forward to this set. -
Black Unity! Long live Pharoah!

I have one of those OJC limited editions, but its packed away. I was happy to see it (long out of print) and happy to have it. He's no Jackie, but I'm not arguing he is

Man, he just came up in my thoughts, miss this dude, big time.
-
Wow, what a loss, RIP

Just dreaming, but if I was independently wealthy, with a bottomless pit of cash, I'd just go ahead and order t-shirts of the entire BN 1500 and 4000 series, plus Patrick Roques Connoisseurs. Patterns would be pretty sweet.

Still confused. Huh? What does this suggest? Some sort of conformity on what we mean by "avant"?. I'm further confused. Sorry, admitting my ignorance; guess this is where my observations come and get back at me. I'm just a listener, not a musician; on the other hand, thanks for laying down some more artists to listen to! Yeah, thanks everyone for these posts! I really like how all of you phrased your thoughts on this! Sorry, JSngry for the confusion I started!

Still not following. Agree, about Gato in 66 and 76, apples and oranges is the talk to be had, but what Gato was in the 60's was certainly "reinvented" in the 70's. I mean there are a slew of players who did this: Ayler (in the 60's) Klemmer, Byrd, Miles even. I guess I just still don't understand your comment. All I'm pointing out is that this live Cherry set is awesome, is all. I never pin-pointed Gato at all. Special. Great record. Weirdly, Cherry and Blackwell had this bond much akin to Ornette and Haden's bond. That seemed to be the recording history after BN (still have a soft spot for the Empty Fox Hole) and the Impulse(s)! You get the sense these guys were going to play together in one format or another until they draw their last breaths. (and they all did) fascinating!

Woah. Sun Ra-ish sounding, I think I read here a thread/tie between Hill and Ra talking/collaborating in Chicago in the 50's (dunno who or where)
-
I'm not following a word you said here. Gato? 60's v. 70's? Why don't we talk about 60's v. 70's George Benson? Irrelevant.
-
Cherry's BN's are spectacular, and to think who he had as sideman....wow! We don't even need to rehearse the Atlantics with Ornette (beside the one will seemingly never hear) Wow!
-
About Patrick Roques, I believe he carried the Reid Miles torch very fine, and the Connoisseur series album covers he either designed or gave a "facelift" to were very fine indeed: Patterns, Medina, Jack Knife, Solid, Vertigo, Third Season, Thinking of Home, Dance with Death (all the Hills he designed) were awesome! Is he still active? Is he designing the Tone Poets covers now (that weren't originally issued?) What does he look like? Is he alive? Can't even find an image of this dude on Google even.

Curious what these are?

Since this is a Don Cherry corner, I'd like to add that I still think his three BN's are superb as well as the live set released by ESP (three volumes me thinks) Why not did ESP make this a boxset?
