ECM switch from WB to Polydor in the U.S., When?
JSngry replied to six string's topic in Discography
That was my experience as well...the next best think to silence was apparently the sound bacon frying on a campfire with firecrackers going off all around! -
Ben Webster's is far from the only countenance on which I have seen that expression, nor his the only head on which I've seen a hat worn with such an attitude, nor his body the only one one which I've seen that language. Although to be fair, the ones one which such things have been encountered are not all that many! Point just being that CT's appearance and body language "speaks with authority", if you know what I mean. I'd say that Julius Watkins is almost pulling his look off with equal authority, but the French Horn kinda causes a disconnect... otoh, Butter looks like a photo of a photo. Perfect!

I would disagree with this...so musc as to say that the live shows after Jaco left were "better" than the ones from during his last year or so. Thye were certainly more focused on group playing than on individual star trips...although I once saw Wayne drive Jaco so hard that it was funny...Jaco was doing his shit and Wayne suddenly looked straight at him, bumped everythig up several notches and RAN with it. Jaco kept up, but it was obvious who was driving that bus! I heard the band 8-9 times between 1974 and 1982, and although the presentation certainly evolved, the music never deteriorated, even when the egos were on full display. These were all egos with some really vast skill sets, ya' know? The closest anybody came to outright vapidity was Jaco, once that solo bass thing took root with the echoplex and all that. That was a drag after the first time. But that was it! As for Live and Unreleased itself, again, all I can say is that that was one helluva band.

If years of buying from Dusty Groove have taught me nothing else, it's that as long as you have a reliable baseline, any review system works! -
Helluva band, that's all I can say.

Sometimes looking is better than talking. It's definitely a different mode of communication. Just as the best way to experience music is to hear it, perhaps the best way to experience an album cover is by viewing it. If nothing else, I find it entertaining and/or amusing how many "themes" cover designers have worked with, and how it can be broken down into a lot of variations on not all that many themes...just like music, literature, or anything else, really!

I have a promo of a Pee Well Ellis Savoy album, but that's several decades and label-owners later. -
Congratulations to Michael Weiss, on his 500 gig with the VV Orchestra

I have reasonably good luck with Yelp reviews when I travel...here's the results for "Oakland Soul Food": http://www.yelp.com/c/oakland/soulfood -
Something I wonder about, not just with Armstrong, but with athletes in general - if everybody's juiced, then nobody's juiced, right? More or less. I know, personal honor and honest endeavor and all that, but...tell it to Wall Street, tell it to Main Street, tell it to everybody who knows good and goddamned well that cheating sucks and destroys your soul, but unless and until you get caught, it also puts money in your bank, prestige on your profile, and power in your aura. What's a little lost soul relative to all THAT? Tell that, and also that very, very few cheaters who get caught actually get outright ruined by it. Those who are are more often than not plagued by dumbness more than by the cheating impulse. For everybody else, they expeirince setbacks of one degree or another, but keep going. Cheaters, the odds are in your favor over the long haul. Definitely. But fuck you anyway.

As well as why Max idolized Big Sid...talk about a deft touch on the drums!

At this point, all I really want to know is who produced this session originally (if not Granz), who own(s)(ed) the masters, and why it never got a real reissue by "Verve" anywhere but Japan. Were there estate issues, as with Sweet Rain, or what, exactly. That, and wtf is the deal with that Memphis company...do they know that their physical address is being used as the "company" address for an EU PD release operation, or are they in on it, and if so, where does organized crime come in?
-
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/lede I guess it's a rebellion against the overarching tyranny of typesetting in the modern world. 'Bout time!

For Big Sid, indeed! And that Charlie Shavers is one tough customer his own self (as is that Billy Kyle, eh?).

I never heard anybody say anything really bad about Stan Musial as a ballplayer or as a human. To me, that's the ultimate championship.

I'd been a listener since 1974 or so. Of course, back then a lot of the songs they played in 2012 were brand new. But yeah, when I played regularly on the local chitlin' circuit, you really saw first-hand how community-rooted that station was. It's not really funny, but in a way it is...legendary local DJ Cousin Linnie used to have the afternoon drive-time slot, and he had a thing called Round Up The Posse, which was where if you got jacked or something while he was on the air, you could call it in right there and he'd put out the word. Supposedly it was quite effective, with one tale being told of a car thief actually abandoning the car just a few blocks from where he had stolen if because he had the car radio on and Linnie came on with Round Up The Posse and people started pointing to the car as it was driving by them. No idea how true that story really is, but no matter, it's true in essence. And that's just one angle.
