WAAAAY many surprises!

Had two memorable Salsa Meets Jazz nights there in 1980 One was Lou Donaldson/Ray Baretto (w/ the great Sal Cuevas on bass, whatever happened to him?), & some just-into-the-city Cuban boat refugee drummers, two of whom turned out to be Daniel Ponce & Ignacio Berroa, playing an intermission set that freaked everybody out. I didn't realize until recently, but the influx of the Mariel refugees really upset (in several ways) the then predominantly Puerto Rican NYC Salsa scene. The other one was Charlie Rouse/Conjunto Libre, w/some really hot charanga band alternating sets. Those were great nights, great music, great crowds, great vibes, great club (huge, but great). Anybody who did it like that is ok by me. RIP, and thank you.

Slow is not more work than fast, but it's a helluva lot more challenging...

Relaquering is asking for trouble... And those crummy black mouthpieces are actually quite good if you get an older, short-shanked one & hollow out the chamber just so to free up the bottom end. Joe played a 4*, slightly more open than the stock 3*. You don't get a buttload of volume with that, but you can get beaucoups tone, and if you learn the diaphragm control incumbent with a smaller tip opening, you can project just fine. I used to play a wide-open metal Berg (120/0) until I found an old short-shanked C* in my closet about 10 years ago (had it since high school, had totally forgotten about it). Pulled it out on a whim, and have been on it ever since. No desire to go back to a loud, bright, metal ever again!
