  1. This is a serious rec, btw. A Johnny Otis project No YouTube links will be posted because of the lyrical content. But Shugie Otis plays some serious guitar on there.
  2. The Whirled - You Are The Children
  3. O. V. Wright Laura Lee Denise LaSalle Millie Jackson James Carr, definitely Clarence Carter Johnnie Taylor Little Milton The list goes on.
  4. Looking serious. Bill Barron is.
  5. Computerized inventory controls reduced overstock of all but really "bad" products. Chuck pointed this out while it was happening and I was asking where all the cutouts had gone.
  6. Budd Krakke - Call The Plumber!!!
  7. They're all good, so go with the ones that you think you'll like most.
  8. Dude.. when I discovered cutout bins, which was a few weeks after discovering jazz, the bottom of the barrell was the 3/0.99 bin. I always looked, and always found. But those were cutout bins, totally different supply chain. Cutouts hardly still exist. Today, the dollar bin is not something towards which I gravitate. Once a year per store, generally. And as the "vinyl revival" goes in and prices continue getting batshit crazy, the less incentized I am to play that game

  10. Those were "reissues' in only the most literal sense. They were Kenton issuing his old records on his own label, on his own dime. He bought(?) his old masters from Capitol to get them back in the market again. At the time, all that reminded in print was a Duophonic repackaging of Artistry In Rhythm and a Greatest Hits package. Do yeah, those Creative World reissue covers were ugly/generic but as tangible statements of an artist's self-determination, they were a real statement. The whole Creative World enterprise was, really.

    Charlie Mariano

Toshiko experienced a forced exile from her birth country into a land held my an occupational force, with a family stripped of all of their material possessions. https://www.womenshistory.org/education-resources/biographies/toshiko-akiyoshi Hey, that's pretty darn American too!
  12. Not sure I understand why I would want to spend time with some that's worse than something I already don't spend time with?
  13. Did Jaws have some sort sort of unofficial production deal with Prestige?
  14. Kitty Dixon - The Two Sides of Kitty!!!
  15. My son has advised me that there might be big league caliber baseball in Arlington again. When did this happen, assuming that it in fact has?

    Charlie Mariano

For anybody who wants to hear the elder Mariano play standards again, here it is. It's superb. Oh, not that it matters, but the grumpy old fact-checker in me feels a compulsion to point out that although Toshiko was born to Japanese parentage, she herself was actually born in China.
  17. I wonder how much 1944 Basie with Lester there really is... It's all airshots, it's all bootleg, and its all pretty frisky. The gold standard is still this one, but any and all additions are welcome here.
  18. I seem to keep getting Gerry Mulligan records, long after I really cared about Gerry Mulligan. Seems like he often had interesting bands and made interesting records even if he himself was not a particularly interesting player!
