  1. I hate to quantify such a thing as "soul"...no good outcomes there....but maybe Dexter projected more....vulnerability, perhaps? Subjectively?
  2. No, just always interested when his name pops up. Not at all a "familiar" name in the history books. He came back off the road (after Maynard, I think?) and lived out his life in Houston, only sometimes being seen there. And I had just listened to him on a locally recorded Arnette Cobb record, literally a day before seeing the reference here. The guy played with Tadd Dameron for crying out loud, he was more than just a name!!!!
  3. Must be 18+ to order?
  4. Obviously!
  5. Do it!
  6. I am critical the culture at large, jazz and otherwise. It is not healthy, it is not aware, it is not anything except obsessed with one form or another of participation trophies, including those that are self-created.
  7. Yeah, that's it!
  8. I think the first live one on Elektra/ Musician was exquisite. But next one was not Also, those last Muse records, good as they are on their own terms, were a little depressing. Just "soloist with rhythm section" records, and Woody looked more dissipated on every cover. Details that came out posthumously confirmed why all this was happening, but even in real time, one could sense that things weren't what they had been just a few years ago.
  9. Not much...but privileged stiffass middle school kids are being taught that this is their music. Like everything else is theirs. Stay in school, stay off the street, and play your jazz.
  10. The new narrative will be that it's everybody's music now!!!

  12. Photo, yes. Design, not so much?
  13. I think I'd keep a dog that bit Joan Crawford!
  14. But that Don Schlitten cover ain't no delight either...
  15. That dog looks like it could wag!

    RIP Timmy Thomas

My hunch is that it was fill-in work, not permanent band membership. Did Byrd have a working band before the group with Pepper Adams? But you never know!
  19. Another thing about those trees (the ones that I knew about any way), was that there was a code of honor, like you had to "agree" that if ANYTHING you got from them came out legitimately, you were honor bound to buy it. Another code was that you were not to share anything with anybody who didn't clearly understand and agree to the code. Now how much that was adhered to after some point...maybe not so much, because shit ended up on dime and finally, for sale by all these "collector" labels. Say what you will about labels like Moon (or in the LP era, a personal favorite, Alamac), they were filling a vacuum in the market. These days...what vacuum? I will take your word on that one...I avoid anything associated with them like the plague. and it's not like I don't know what I'm missing...I do, and that's why I'm making it a point to miss it!
