  1. It so happens that I bought the CD only version from Eremite just a few months ago (figuring the box would be too rare/pricey), so I'm out on this. It deserves attention, though.
  2. More funny stuff: Sent from the Midwest (Ohio) to upstate NY, took five days to get to Washington State??! Odds against this one ever arriving... 3. Will have to seriously consider this. Little or no duplication for me, since the non-Bird Savoys I own are pretty much all from the "hard bop era".
  4. I guess it's not a great Ellington tribute, but I rather enjoy it. Let's throw in
  5. [Emphasis added] I don't think so, either...that is, not unless "Turtlehead" was a term of endearment.
  6. PM sent on Frank Wright -- Blues for Albert Ayler (ESP) $8
  7. More on the "Patterns of Plants": there's a solo piano double CD with Sarah Cahill . I noticed this a couple of years ago, but forgot... [Usual disclaimers: I have no relationship whatsoever with composer, performers, labels, vendors, etc.]
  8. Not quite the same (plants rather than trees), but Mamoru Fujieda released a couple of "Patterns of Plants" CDs on Tzadik: Vol. 1 Vol. 2 I've heard Vol. 1, and it's pretty good.
  9. Phil Jackson doesn't exactly seem to be knocking the cover off the ball as Knicks general manager (IMO of course). Continuing the mixed sports metaphors, if not for the Porzingis draft pick, the "Zen Master" would damn near qualify as the Mike Milbury* of the NBA. (* "Mad Mike", one-time NY Islanders GM, was the worst professional sports executive I've ever seen. But he'll always live on in my memory as the dude who climbed into the MSG seats in 1979 and beat a rowdy fan with the fan's own shoe - )
  10. Cliff, I think you're right re. the CD...my ears were ringing* through much of the first set. Agreed on the concert and Scott's volume. Good experience for my first time at the Falcon - may go to see Pete Malinverni on July 13, although that's not the most convenient date for me. * Not only did Scott play very loud, but the club messed up the sound system/amplification. In the front of the room, drums were overwhelming and bass line inaudible. Sound was much better toward the back.
  11. Sunday night, BH said something onstage to the effect that he had bought back rights to some recordings from the record company, motivated by lack of support. No details. My take is that there will be some reissues, but he'll release them himself. Depending on what recordings, label(s?), company(ies?), etc., a Mosaic licensing deal could be possible, but it's just speculation. (Dunno how this all relates to the fact that Amazon.com has been selling CDRs of Black Saint and In Europe.)

  13. Strangely enough, a group with Billy Harper and Tanksley is playing this Sunday not outrageously far from me: http://www.liveatthefalcon.com/#!160619/ccde Never been to the venue, but may have to check this one out.
  14. If you like Renaissance music, Berkshire usually has lots of good titles on Hyperion/Helios, e.g. currently 6 discs with the Binchois Consort, 11 with The Cardinall's Musick, and 9 with the Brabant Ensemble. Hyperion is a good label to peruse, as Berkshire carries loads of titles (659 by my count; they must have a relationship with the company). Another label to pick through is Regis, which appears to be a legitimate company licensing and reissuing well-known recordings dropped from major label catalogs.
  15. Thanks, very nice video. Good footage of Stan Levey as well. Bassist Buddy Woodson was unknown to me.
  16. An idea I got from a "what are you listening to..." thread. Own a few Ewell recordings, but wasn't aware of this one!
  17. Thanks to clifford, very generous deal, I'd certainly go back for something similar.
  18. My experience much the same. Discovered Billy Bang and Harry Beckett (his dub album "Modern Sound of H B" was shockingly cool), and there are some other interesting items. Need more time/evaluation before proposing further swaps.
  19. This just in: Judge finds enough evidence for Cosby to go to trial on sex assault https://www.yahoo.com/news/cosby-return-court-criminal-sexual-assault-case-100217668.html

    Jessica Williams

Jim, I could of course be wrong, because it was a long time ago. But the memory is pretty strong, since I was a newbie to this board, owned some Williams recordings, and was really surprised. I'm pretty sure there was more than one post (though on different threads), though maybe the reference was offhand. If it was an arbitrary poster rather than a seasoned and knowledgeable veteran like yourself, I wouldn't have bothered to Google. OTOH, I just searched and couldn't find anything, so maybe I'm out to lunch on this.

    Jessica Williams

Jim S. has alluded to the matter on this forum several times in the past (though years ago iirc). I got the impression it was fairly widely known, Googled a few times (also years ago) but couldn't find anything significant, so thought no further of it. I enjoy Williams's pianism and own several recordings, and none of the liner notes even hint at the trans-gender issue.
  22. RIP. "...Paul had serious heart troubles years ago and overcame them? https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/cardiology/patient-care/patient-stories/paul.aspx ..." Interesting. My brother is a cardiologist at URMC. He once mentioned that one of his patients was "an avant-garde jazz trumpeter". I didn't ask the name (for ethical reasons), but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Paul Smoker.
