  1. Discs 1-3. Hope to get through the whole box the next couple of days.
  2. Will do, but it will take a while, possibly 2 weeks or so. In the meantime, I see that you heard the Goldbergs on Opus 111. Hope you enjoyed them.
  3. These were both well-done, though somewhat predictable.
  4. It arrived, but was defective and I've already packed it up to return tomorrow. I very much liked disc 1, which was done in a lively style, but track #8 consisted of static (though all others were fine). That pissed me off so much that I couldn't form serious impressions of discs 2 and 3 (though I listened). My erudition in the area of harpsichord recordings is insufficient to make significant recommendations. I definitely enjoy Hantai's Goldbergs (older release on Opus 111), and he's long been well-regarded. The reviews I've read of his Scarlatti are excellent. I will almost certainly order a replacement set. In purely economic terms, the big complete box by Scott Ross (34 discs for $54 + S/H from Amazon sellers) has a good reputation and is a far better deal than $22 + S/H for this one. But I avoid mega-boxes (most of the discs never get played), and 34 CDs is serious overkill for me in this repertory.
  5. (best image I could find)
  6. Happy birthday! And the Browns won!
  7. I read a lot of the books on "behavioral economics" and this is a new one (about the Kahneman/Tversky collaboration, if that helps).
  8. Happy birthday! Sorry I'm late. Interesting, but will pass on the mathletics.
  9. Happy belated birthday!
  10. Can't comment on Kenton/Neophonic, but a couple of Euro serialists I find enjoyable are Barraqué and Dallapiccola. The "Complete Barraqué " on cpo is very good except for a horrible performance of the Piano Sonata (Woodward and Henck are in-print alternatives; I like the OOP Chen). There's a good recording of D's Il prigionero by Salonen on Sony (haven't heard the obscure Ulisse).
  11. I'll Remember April (feat. Bud Powell) from this:
  12. My collection of Bethlehem titles is not extensive, but I agree 100% with the above!
  13. I recall there used to be occasional concerts at her "Deep Listening Space" in Kingston. I meant to go, but never did...not sure if there have been many recently.
  14. RIP. Very sad and a surprise to me. Hadn't seen news reports, but Rod S. posted something on another thread last night. Agreed.
  15. Happy birthday! Happiest of returns, old bean! However, being an abstemious cove, I can't have a drink in your honour. [Couple of my favourite phrases gleaned from reading all the P.G. Wodehouse novels, so thus adopting Anglicised spelling.]
  16. Calgary 45. Earliest I've ever managed to enter!
  17. Damn...I was happy to see O'Brien's book come out, but now I think it was somewhat of a final statement. [The post quoted above referred to H O'B's recent book. Hod looks rather ill in the 80th birthday photo on his website.]
  18. Very sad news. RIP. When I bought my first O'Brien recording on Reservoir, I was pleasantly shocked to see it was the same guy I recalled from "Three Trumpets", "J R Monterose" and "Guitar Groove", after a long recording hiatus. He became one of my favorite pianists.
  19. I once saw Eighth Blackbird live, and they're a terrific ensemble. Their repertoire can be rather, let's say, variable, but it is adventurous.
  20. I can't make this, but FYI if you're near the Mid-Hudson Valley, NY: Roswell Rudd's 81st birthday celebration, Marlboro, NY
  21. Damn. RIP. Mose was a favorite because of his lyrics before I became a jazz enthusiast. I once saw him live at the now-defunct Bradley's in NYC (iirc).
