    Freddie Gambrell

I've has success scanning the cover twice and using Paint Shop Pro to merge the two images. For cleaning up wave files I've been using CoolEdit v1.2 since the early 1990s :-) Good luck!
  8. Don't all the ice cream vans have a celeste player on board?
  9. Burton Greene says: Can you tell the people who are compiling this to add pianist Paul Bley, and David Wertman (a fine bass player based in Florida), Steve Tintweiss-- bassist who I worked with in the 60's and was Albert Ayler's last bass player, Shelly Rusten--drummer I worked with in the 60's and he played a lot with Sam Rivers. And certainly bassist Mark Dresser should be on the list as well as Perry Robinson (his mother was Jewish), and Ira Sullivan who is half Jewish. Aha.. two more.. cellists: Fred Katz (worked with Chico Hamilton), and Joel Freedman who I've worked with and he also recorded and played with Albert Ayler. And what about Bob James, Gato Barbieri and pianist Lowell Davidson? (They could be..?) Thought of one more.. trumpeter Mark Levin. He then adds in three posts: Jay Rosen (drums), Jay Rozen (tuba), Jane Getz (piano), Larry Fishkind, Roberto Haliffi, Bob Meyer (drums), Rozanne Levine (clarinet), Kali Zusann Fasteau (reeds) Annette Peacock (composer, vocals), Marilyn Crispell ?(pianist), 2 trombonists: Michael Zwerin and Glenn Ferris, and of course David Liebman. Add Dave Schnitzer to the list 3 Harvey's: Wainapel (saxophones), Sorgen (drums), Kaiser (saxophones) I've got to stop.. this is becoming an obsession..! Another Harvey! Bassist Harvey Swartz who among others has played with Sheila Jordan and Steve Kuhn.
  10. I always enjoyed the drumming on the Danny Thomas and Dick Van Dyke theme. Anybody know who they were? I enjoy playing the big band arrangment (solo alto part) of Harlem Nocturne but like to do it stealthily...like sneaking up on someone and then build the ending.

  13. He is in KU Medical Center with a serious heart condition since Monday. He is said to be in good spirits.
  14. Thank you for these BT's JSngry. I wonder what JS thought of Baby Face Willette.
  15. Not interesting, just promotional writing. I'd like to read the Sonny Stitt blindfold test again. What did Getz have to say? Desmond? I remember there were funny moments in Monk's BT, esp. concerning Oscar Peterson.
  16. "Nikoli Slonimsky: Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns" I studied it a little when I was 17 (1965). Slonimsky started as a mathematician. The patterns are mathematical. They divide a range (say an octave) into equal parts, and embellish using symmetry. It was not meant for diatonic harmony. "But isn't the Lexicon of Musical Invective just a colletion of other people bitching about music, and merely collected and edited by Slonimsky?" Exactly. One critic wrote that Brahms could not write a melody. All his books are worth reading. He really was special. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas_Slonimsky
  17. I'm tired of reading about all my heroes dieing. Why don't we post about all the great players that are just born? Oh...wait...never mind.
  18. Eddie Peobody was something! I listened to about 6 other videos.
  19. I DL the jpg(s) to the desktop and use ACDSee to view them. They are too small to read on-line.

    Sonny Rollins

Rollins is PLAYING on that clip. Wish we could hear the rest of the solo. (So is David Lee, esp. during Rollins solo)
  21. Quote: Take a look at this: Unquote Sonny sounds like he's been listening to Lester Young for a week! I never heard him sound so much like Lester. Some of the lines and phrasing. Interesting.
  22. Concerning Sonny in 1965 with NHOP and Alan Dawson playing rhythm changes By 1965 Sonny had mined this vein almost empty. I also find Dawson annoying till about 2/3 into the piece. Then he starts to relate to what Sonny is doing. The most brilliant Oleo is found on Our Man In Jazz (RCA, 1962 live), IMO.
  23. Concerning So some critics thought Kirk he was a circus act. Can't imagine why :-)
