Hello friends of Red Garland. I agree that Red Garland's Piano is a favourite. A wonderful recording! Groovy did not really live up to my expectations after RGP. However I bought a double disc Red garland at The Prelude - Areally gret live recording recorded in 1959 and reissued in 2006. Amazon Red was a helluva player. Also please read Miles self biography for som interesting views of Red. Best of luck! /Shaft

shaft replied to JohnBlutarski's topic in Re-issues
I have the Holland 1993 CD Pressing and that is NOT a Rare Groove. However it could ofcourse been issued as a Rare Groove later and somewhere else... /Shaft -
The Brendels are truly great!!! /Shaft PS Serkin does really nice with Beethoven Piano Concertos on Telarc label. Emil Gileils is great for the sonatas on DG. Look no further!

Hi good choices! I have them both but would not like to part ;-) Anyway, I would try to order them from Amazon USED&NEW section. Pyramid is for example offered at $5.99 from Newbury Comics which has servered me very well in the past. Of course amazon is not for everyone - credit card must be had etc. and also sometimes things listed as used are nota available so you have to be a bit careful and preferrably ask by mail first if the item is in stock. Good luck Chewy! /Shaft

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
shaft replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yeah - I strongly recommend "the Singers Unlimited". There is also a great box called Magic Voices which contains all of their recorded output with the exception of their Christmas album. http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Voices-Singers...0719&sr=1-3 It's great and very informative and superlative booklet too ;-) /Shaft -
I'll second that! Very nice Japanese edition and good sound too /Shaft

Hi Guys, I have the TOCJ-4250 from 1997 and I am listening through the first song. No clicks or anything resembling clicks on that one. The sound is rather dull though - not really up to this series usual standard.... /Shaft

What's the story of Stanley on Heads Up? Don't they deal mostly with new recordings? Is it a reissue. I can't find anything on their website about it. /Shaft

Great article. Thanks! It's great to read Steve Hoffmans comments he seems to me to be quite sincere and honest. Over the years I have aquired a dozen or so of his DCC-discs and I must say I'm very impressed by his work. In many cases the absolutely smoke other releases. I was listening to some Miles DCC (Cookin and Musings) the other day and they just sound alive and "right". Not overly bright and artificial. Not bass heavy but just very very balanced and transparent. Clear and organic at the same time. Well done! I know there is and has been a very strong almost cult like following to Mr Hoffman but I do not consider myself a part of that. I'm just an music lover audiophile since 25 years who really care how recordings sound on my system. On the other hand Rudy VG has really screwed up so many of his RVG masters sometimes to an earshattering point. Very bright and hard on the ears sound and especially in the beginning of the RVG-series on Blue Note the soundstage was compressed to almost mono-sound. Didn't like that....just listen to the RVG of Lee Morgans Sidewinder or Hank Mobley's Soul Station. For me it's not so much in the 20, 24-Bits marketing thing that the secret of good sound lays - more about the skills and ears of the remastering engineer. /Shaft

Oscar Peterson-what do board members think of him?
shaft replied to Tony Pusey's topic in Recommendations
Hi again, Thanks for the thumbs up;-) Yeah you guys are so right - London House is from 1961...my bad! There are several editions from London House - both single discs on Verve and the great 5-disc box set (now OOP I think) plus a recent release on Lonehill(3-disc). The Lonehills I have so far have not been very good soundwise and I do not know if they "borrowed" the same master tapes as the verve set? I would recommend the Verve 5-disc. Great sound, packaging and booklet a bit more expensive but a sound investment nevertheless;-) /Shaft -
Oscar Peterson-what do board members think of him?
shaft replied to Tony Pusey's topic in Recommendations
Well, I really enjoy listening to Oscar. I think he combines feeling with astounding technique and joy of playing. I have a lot of his CDs mostly Verve and MPS which I heartily recommend. I lately got into The London House sessions from 1965 (Verve box-set) and the way he used the trio was really revolutionary. They were not just backuppers and timekeepers but really important to the end result. Magic.Apparently they did a LOT of practise on the side to get to this level of skill as a Trio. If I can say something on the negative side it is that I can't listen to OP for a very extended time because I find him sometimes "Overwhelming" in that sense that you really have to keep up with his technique and playing and absorb it can almost be a bit tiring He's the best when you really want to hear som hard swing and just have fun! /Shaft PS. I feel a bit sad to read comments about OP - Hitler - Canadians etc. They go over the top and do not really add to the thread. Best leave them out please -

Hi, I strongly second the statements that Caiman should not be used when you want to order out of print albums! I have gone that route several times and I'm fed up with waiting and did also have great great problems getting a refund for my items. caiman is OK if it's a new item that is in stock - that's it. /Shaft

No one mentions: What The World Needs Now: Stan Getz Plays The Burt Bacharach Songbook Some people don't like (hate it) some love it /Shaft

YEAH it's great. And what a great picture by Pete Turner on the cover. I would like to recommend the London House sessions as well by OP. Great live sessions! /Shaft

Hi Guys, I would just like to add that I have had better experiences with Fresh Sound than Lonehill releases. The Fresh sounds like they put more work in their releases when it comes to sound quality and packaging. The LoneHills are (the 5 discs I have) somewhat muddy and the source sounds like not proper remastering from master tapes but from other resources like vinyl or other tape sources. I'm quite confused about the legal licensing matter but my general standpoint is that IF there is a legit release Japanese or whatever, I fork up the money for that release and feel good ;-) If it's not available, or is not likely to be, I might in rare occasions (ie 5) go for that release. Just my 5 cents.... /Shaft
