Just heard Blues Beach from the new cd Everything Must Go. Classic Steely Dan....sounds great to me. I'm very biased. I'll buy their music until they're dead or I am. B)

Elvis Costello to wed Diana Krall
RonF replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Elvis has been seriously trying to break into jazz for three or four years. I'd say a duet or two is guaranteed. -
As I was reading and re-reading, I kept thinking, "And I've only had ONE BEER." A most disturbing state of affairs. It's understood, of course, that the media giants are, for the most part, owned and operated by staunch conservatives. Some with an agenda, religious or otherwise. We all need to scream and shout. Good post Chris.

Glad you're back, Jim.

Smooth Sailing Teddy's new one on HighNote was just released last week. Very sad news.

I'm way more sick of Rumsfeld than I am of Mike. What the hell is he doing at center court?
-
I like it better too. Thanks Jim.

Weiz, We have more in common than I thought. Not the avatar. -
Mike, You just ran through a late sixties Pentangle soundtrack for me. I also particularly liked the early ones you mentioned (I still have them) and I also have Jansch's Nicola which I played the grooves off of: Go Your Way My Love, Woe Is Love My Dear, Nicola, Box Of Love. Great songs! Great musicians.

I thought you might be talking about guitarist Royce Campbell. Royce I would definitely go see!

weizen, I had a very similar experience last year with a Fantasy vinyl of Miles's Workin'. I noticed that the vinyl was remarkably thin and mentioned it to my "record man". Not a problem, was the answer. Took it home and clunk, pop, skip...yeah, that toaster oven thang. He gave me a new one that worked but, MAN! that's bad!

On second thought. I've seen people lose their composure in a political forum when the discussion gets heated but I have never seen anyone resort, immediately, to insults and namecalling over a simple disagreement about a freaking cd! For that, Oh Great HoundsTooth, you get the Dubious Achievement Award for Bulletin Board Sociopath of the Month. Congratulations! You deserve it dude! I've never claimed to be a reviewer. I leave that to people who are more talented than I, but I do know when something I hear is good. Once and for all, folks, The Promise Land is good. It's a no-brainer. Scott Yanow at the AMG site is a good listener and a good reviewer and I note that he regards the album as "Top-notch hard bop", "easily recommended for fans of modern straight-Ahead jazz." He gave it Four Stars. But, ofcourse, Scott has to have his head up his a** because the Great HoundsTooth at Organissimo, has firmly denounced the recording, "no swing, no sparkle, no nothin'" Brilliant, Crime Dog! Cedar Walton's The Promise Land was released last year on HighNote (arguably the best small jazz label operating today, putting out consistently good music by an impressive stable of fine jazz artists) and the CD went to Number 1 on the JazzWeek national, jazz radio airplay chart. That's 85 jazz radio program directors and jazz programmers all across the United States who report to the weekly chart, but, according to the Great HoundsTooth, are also completely full of sh*t. "I would hate to see anyone waste money on this trainwreck," remarked the Great HoundsTooth. Brilliant again, Tail-O-The-Pup! HoundsTooth, not only have you demonstrated what sort of person you are; you have also revealed that you have no clue about what you are listening to and you have even less of a clue about how to behave on a bulletin board. You have a very rude mouth, you have no manners and you have no ear. Put a cork in it, stay out of Recommendations and stick to the fluffy stuff.

I'm sorry to have offended you jazzhound. I was trying to achieve the opposite. I obviously failed. Now that I've been needlessly accused of being rude and obnoxious, I think I'll bid you farewell, jazzhound. Good luck and good posting.

I was told that Rush Limbaugh has great fun calling Michael Moore "fat". Man, how quickly times change!
-
Jazzhound, I certainly respect your opinion in these matters but I honestly can't connect with any of your critique of this record. I don't know anyone who hasn't been crazy about it. I said it before, I'll say it again, I thought it was one of the best albums of last year. (I'm not the only one, BTW) No swing, no sparkle, no nothin. Agreeing to disagree isn't a bad thing.

Awesome Storm along Colorado's Front Range

The ever-otherworldly Madrid Jazz festival. Boy, did you nail that! Good memory. The Madrid Blues Festival is a pretty spacey happening too. You could have played the bar at La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe. They used to have jazz once in a while. From the Albuquerque Symphony to the rodeo. A day in the life of a New Mexico Jazzman! B) -

Jim, We were in Santa Fe until 1981. Just wondering where you played in Albuquerque and if you ever drove up north to Santa Fe to play? There was a pretty cool recording studio in Cerrios or Galisteo(?), south of Santa Fe. I knew a few jazz cats who did some work there. -

Scott, I'm down in SW Colorado but some friends of ours in Bailey emailed photos that look exactly like that. Now that's Colorado snow! -
I agree. Good post Jim. I'm not sure where Stefon is coming from in that quote. I heard him play one of his compositions - a tribute to Milt Jackson - at a festival a couple of years ago and it was as moving, full of feeling and bluesy as anything I've ever heard. Maybe he's affected by the blues more than he realizes.
