  1. I spent many of my paychecks (happily) there when I worked 1 block away for about 5 years. I remember Joe Horowitz as the main guy in the jazz section. Sorry to hear this sad news, but of course, not surprised.
  2. Here a kinda more postive story: My Mom's boyfriend was the pianist in what was called, I think, The Quiet Bar in the Charles Hotel/Cambridge, MA, right downstairs from The Regattabar. For those of you not in the know, the "R-bar" is one of the two major jazz clubs in the Boston area. So, Paul is playing Over The Rainbow and next thing ya know, Jimmy Smith is standing next to the piano saying to Paul, "move, over; I'm going to show you some hipper changes," and sure enough, he did and was very friendly/personable. Rare, I guess after hearing all of the above.
  3. This may be the only Al Haig video - at least it is the only video I have with Haig. I love this one despite Haig's upset because of the joy and fun exhibited by everyone else - not to mention the musicianship of all of the participating jazz giants.
  4. As of Friday, December 28, it is officially out! Paul Combs also states you might be able to find this in local bookstores and you can also purchase through Amazon.com. Or here: http://www.press.umich.edu/script/press/22963 Marla
  5. So, speaking of the 68-70 period when Mobley was in Europe...has anybody heard of (or viewed) video or know if such video exists? I was kind of hoping the jazz-loving BBC or perhaps Belgium or France broadcasting companies might have unearthed some video of Hank?
  6. Shawnn Monteiro is actually the daughter of bassist Jimmy Woode. Tom, Carmen's Live at the Great American Music Hall is one of my all-time favorites and I still listen to my scratched-to-the-max LPs. You don't need to have a video to feel how much fun Carmen and Diz have on this recording and that always makes me smile, too. I love the Denon recording and think the musicianship all around is outstanding, especially Clifford Jordan and John Collins! Marla
  7. Going Sunday. Sad that I probably won't get there in time for Lewis Nash's quintet (11 a.m.).
  8. I keep my one Ellington quarter in a safe place; strange that they are so hard to find...
  9. I believe Mel Lewis and Joe Lovano are featured in the documentary.
  10. Right there with ya, Dan! Always exciting to hear about new Mobley out there and this one seems like it is going to be a gem. So happy to finally know more about it!
  11. Thanks so much, Niko. Great to know the lineup and a treat to hear samples, too.
  12. So, we probably won't know the personnel and full set of tunes 'til 4/17? I wonder at what point the on air host received advance copies for airplay? Oh well, about 15 1/2 days to go. I'm pretty tapped out for cash right now, so I'm hoping it will make it to itunes fast (gift certificate) Marla
  13. August 30 - September 4, Ron Carter Big Band at The Jazz Standard in NYC: My link Same band as the recording, according to Bob Freedman, with the exception of Lewis Nash. Willie Jones III will be manning the drum chair. Wish I could be there and maybe some of you can! Marla
  14. I'm headed down for Sunday's festivities and hoping to make it there in time for the Mingus Big Band set; I think they are on first? Yeah, the forecast isn't looking too good. I'm hoping everyone has an umbrella handy! Marla
  15. Hmmm...I know that the great jazz pianist Barry Harris has lived at Nica's home in NJ for many years. Kenny Barron, too? I thought Kenny lived in Brooklyn or one of the boroughs of NYC. Marla
  16. I'm probably not looking in the right place, but is there somewhere to click on to make a small donation to Organissimo/the forums? Thanks, Marla
  17. My link Bob Freedman conducting the Ron Carter Big Band - June, 2011 Last one for now - the entire band posted for a picture - I think you'll recognize many of the great musicians, including, I believe, Frank Wess! Ron Carter Big Band
  18. I know this was recorded in NYC and was a collaboration between Ron Carter and the great arranger, Bob Freedman. I believe Lewis Nash is on drums. I'll try to get more information and will post again if I do. Marla
  19. Found this regarding the creators of the "JAZZ" stop design: The stamp features the work of a California artist, Paul Rogers, and was designed by art director Howard Paine, postal officials said. - Marla
  20. Belated birthday wishes to Tom - one of my favorite people (and favorite jazz photographer)! Marla
  21. I agree with Michael - it truly was a blessing that Hank even wanted to do a gig and he gave what he could - I was there and as stated previously had the incredible good fortune to speak with him for a few minutes and he seemed very happy to be there, was positive and upbeat. I could still very much hear Hank that evening at the Angry Squire - meaning his style. He was so unique that no matter how he was feeling physically, he still had his unique voice/sound/phrasing, etc. Marla
  22. The new release from Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden - Jasmine. Track I've been listening to over and over again: Don't Ever Leave Me...beautiful!
  23. Brownie, I'm sorry to be so dense, but can you please guide me to the spot I would click to hear this concert? Thank you, Marla
  24. Going to donate now. Thanks so much for everything you do to keep this great forum alive! Marla
  25. Rob McConnell was an all around extraordinary composer/arranger/musician. In all three categories mentioned, he had a beautiful style all his own and he will be so missed. R.I.P. Marla
