What live music are you going to see tonight?
Van Basten II replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
It is a bit sad but the leader was the less interesting member of the group, most of his arrangements felt like they were going for a revival of the 50s, can't say his playing was compelling way too many clichés and when he was into something he rarely was able to pull it through , Chet Doxas joined for a few pieces and blew him into oblivion, too bad the rhythm section was cooking and Roney is an interesting guy, but the music never went beyond ok. Not a bad night but just average. Next week The Story. First gig of the year going to see sax player Jon Irabagon with our finest local players on drums Jim Doxas, bass Fraser Hollins and on piano John Roney -
Still African music but way less groovy but still with great rhythm , there will be probably unfair and uninformed comparaisons to Cesaria Evora, they are a lot of differences between them, they called this style of music maloya which is one of the main musical styles of La Réunion , although what she offers may be a slicker version of this music. Still fascinating to listen. http://www.myspace.com/salemtradition

My 5 cents, the first book is better than it gets weaker for each following effort, it's not great litterature by any means, to be quite mean you're kinda of happy there won't be a 4th volume the themes are interesting about how machist Sweden is and what really goes on there behing the cover of social-democracy , but in a way the writer makes a mess of them all. Still kudos for creating a character like Lisbeth Sallander. Wouldn't be suprised if she gets a life outside of Larsson's imagination.

Nope, looks tasty though. Here's a bit of info Like most stories involving aliens this one seems, well, made up. For a few years in the late 60's to early 70's worlds collided and aliens walked among us. And made music. Psycho African Beat is the complete recorded output of this amazing group and their unprecedented music that combined elements of American soul, funk, garage rock and psych with African rhythms and melodies. This magical moment lasted for 3 short years producing only 3 releases: 1 - 4 song EP + 2 - 7"s. Today, these 3 original releases are the most sought after and most elusive African funk records. It took Frank Gossner (Voodoofunk.com, Soulpusher, DJ Franco) 4 years, 9 visits to Ghana, and dozens of newspaper ads and radio announcements to track them down. Found a favorable review here http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/6102

This is why I don't like playoffs. I've always disliked them most of all with baseball. I think the regular season should determine who the two best teams are, and then the championship game should be between the two best teams. With playoffs, the championship is awarded to the team that is hot at the end, on a winning streak, no matter how many teams were better over the course of the previous four months. When the Steelers won the Super Bowl a few years ago, weren't they the last-seeded team? That's kind of funny coming from such a CFL fan. -
Newbie question, does these MP3 player take flac files without any much work, I always thought they only could support MP3, but if they take files that you can find on a CD, I might be interested in getting one ? Would just settle for one with a lot of memory.

Found this at the used CD store among other titles of this series, I've noticed you can find them at abordable prices on Amazon Can't say yet about the other titles but this was terrific music , some old Youssour N'Dour with his band prior he became a solo star, they seem to have really digged up some rare quality stuff , sound is a bit uneven but that's a minor problem. Can't wait to pick up the others. Here's the track list. Disc: 1 1. STAR NUMBER ONE: Faran Tamba (4:38) 2. XALAM: Daïda (7:27) 3. SUPER DIAMONO DE DAKAR: Maaduleen (4:50) 4. You are correct there is no "freedom of speech " guaranteed like in the US we do have one but it is limited by a law against promoting hate propaganda and promoting genocide. Interesting thing to note, the ruling regarding the Dire Straits comes from a non-governmental association that broadcasters join on a free basis. -

You know, I picked up a copy of that in '76, and still haven't read it... I guess it was the tail end of my Camus obsession, and I just never got to it. But I transport it from place to place rather than getting rid of it, so I guess there's still hope. It's been on my shelf for months. It's quite apt at the minute, as we are on the verge of a flu epidemic/pandemic (can't remember which) here in England, with a nice little pocket where I live, in the North West. Are you listening Bill? Indeed I am - and I got my free anti-flu injection for the over-65s last week! As for Camus, far and away the most significant one for me has always been The Outsider (L'étranger). I've read it twice in English and twice in French - its very short length and plain-statement style made the latter possible. I read L'étranger when I was in high school and La peste a little later (about two years after when I was in CEGEP) , La peste made a stronger impression on me but it maybe because I was a bit more mature. Have not revisited him afterwards.

Come again? ... I was being ironic Words are offensive because you want them to be offensive, as a French Canadian should I ask to erase the presence of Kermit the Frog on the Muppet show or anywhere else or calling him instead Kermit the Toad because the word frog is offensive to me ? As much as I support Gay rights, it has nothing to do with them, the song has nothing to do with promoting homophobia or putting in a positive fashion. And more importantly , erasing words from airwaves and pretend they do not exist is like hiding his head in the sand, it does not achieve anything. It does not stop hatemongers to use it and it certainly won't stop them to hate Another reason not to go this way is the can of worms it will open, if we start revisionning all the lyrics of past songs in the name of Political correctness we're not out of the woods. Whether it's words that are no longer acceptable or ideas mentionned in the lyrics How about You're sixteen, you're mine , looks like a pedophile credo to me or Run for your life by the Beatles. Violence towards women Am pretty sure that most of the songs written prior to the 60sand a bunch after that had some part that have contents that could be considered offensive nowadays. Making the airwaves "clear" and pretend that the world is a fairy (hope this word is not deemed too offensive) tale does not make the world better or safer, it just makes it harsher for people when reality kicks in. isn't this this what the TV Mad Men is all about ? -
While still reading Proust at work, started reading this at home It's Ingrid Betancourt tale of her kidnapping by FARC members, to the best of my knowledge it has yet to be translated in English. Don't know what kind of politician she would have made but I can tell you she's a heck of a storyteller.

The song has been played for 25 years for crying out loud, and they now suddenly discover that it has bad words in it, wait 'til they hear some Eminem or Kayne West yes the word faggot is offensive but you gotta put it within the context of the song , the character telling the story is an idiot, so I guess we should not allow All in the family to be played on the air because Archie Bunker was a mysoginistic, racist, homophobic and everything you could think. Here's a great idea let's only play Kenny G, nobody will find anything offensive about him. PS Found a clip of the band playing the song with Elton John joining them on piano, not fan of the dude but I'm pretty sure if he thought the lyrics were so unacceptable towards gay he sure would have not join them. It's cheap political correctness at his wort. -
