  1. Fun read! It caused me to take a long look at all the 78s in one of my cases. Sigh. If an entire wall full of cds is going to make my son cry some day when I depart this mortal coil, I don't even want to think about how he'll react to the 78s!
  2. Hmmmm. I'm not at all a fan of the Impulse! stuff or, frankly, of the 60s era avant garde at all, so, despite my urge to get every Mosaic set, I have to give this one a loooooong think.
  3. Yes, I've had 4 and 5 for a while, but for some reason, I didn't have the first three. Anyway, Maynard is great on all of them!
  4. I dismissed these years ago as commercial stuff but decided to return to them after all these years with this set, and there really is some fine music here! Good sound too.
  5. I've always liked these. Bought a box of the originals many years ago at FNAC during the heart of the great cd reissue era.
  6. Finishing the box set of Baker's Timeless recordings with this one. His playing is fine (though I'm not a big fan of his singing), and Philip Catherine's guitar is great to hear. Glad I got it.
  7. Yes, I just saw that email. Both are fine boxes, but the Savory is really, REALLY essential. Maybe my favorite Mosaic, and I have nearly all of them.
  8. How's the sound on this one?

    Andy Bey RIP

I'm just returning from a trip to see this. I came to Bey fairly late, but I loved the quality of his voice. There was something intensely intimate about it. RIP.
  10. Murray does a nice job of playing Murray. He's in it some, but not a lot. You can safely wait till it streams to have a look!
  11. Barrett is new to me. What album to you recommend?!
  12. Went to see "The Friend." If you like "pet helps you get in touch with your life" movies, this one is for you. I thought it was sweet, nicely acted, especially by the dog, but hardly an oscar contender.
  13. Oh, so am I. A hopeless completist, but then, I used to play the instrument, and I can still remember listening in utter awe to Big T's version of "St. James Infirmary" in the Armstrong Town Hall Concert. I tried doing the waterglass thing and quickly realized that I'd have to reinvent the instrument completely--change all the positions--to play it. I just shook my head and decided to let *him* do it!
  14. lf memory serves, this was Jack's last studio album, wasn't it? It was somehow acquired and reissued on cd by the family on the briefly revived "Teagarden Presents" label back in 2005 with "Dame Blanche" listed as a "special bonus track" and an uninteresting generic cover. I like the original Verve cover a lot better!
  15. Nice piece in the New York Times on Billie Holiday consisting of a series of short essays focusing on specific recordings accompanied by links: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/arts/music/billie-holiday-jazz-music.html
  16. Finally got around to this one. Interesting Bird. Not essential (well, unless, like me, you think ALL Bird is essential!)
  17. I liked Conclave, but I didn't think it was best picture material.
  18. I agree about "Anora." I thought several nominees were better. I just saw "I'm Still Here," which did win the best foreign film award, but it was far better than "Anora." Still waiting to see "The Brutalist."
  19. Vanguard set, disc 3. Nice Hawk on the Thompson session.
  20. As I read over this thread, I didn't see any mention of the two reissues from 1999. Four of the tracks from "Mel Powell Bandstand" were reissued on the first one ("The Best Things in Life") and one more on the second ("It's Been So Long"). Presumably, the vocal tracks Mike mentions above were the ones that got left out.
  21. Both great, but that Teagarden album is to die for.
  22. I agree it is a bit overlong. I go back and forth on the music. A lot of important things are communicated in the lyrics, and that sort of reinforces the artificiality of their existence. Certainly an interesting movie. I saw "The Order" last night and thought it was very good, especially Jude Law's performance as a slightly burnt out FBI agent.
