  1. Absolutely essential, IMHO.
  2. I love the Anecdotes book. It has a quote from Zoot Sims about what it was like playing in Russia with Goodman. Zoot said, "Every gig with Benny is like playing in Russia." I know BG had his fans, but both Crow and Phil Woods were somewhat less than complimentary!
  3. Me three! I only just returned from a long overseas trip to find the box waiting for me. I've always liked Mosaic's remastering, but I have to say they've outdone themselves with this one. The sound is really wonderful!
  4. Yes, I've read accounts of his...er...eccentricity?! He was apparently a dreadful husband. We've talked here many times about artistic geniuses who turn out to be pretty lousy human beings. All that said, "Dr. Strangelove" is a masterpiece, and Sellers is fabulous in it!
  5. Saw "Conclave" last night. A bit slow, but a fine performance by Ralph Fiennes.
  6. He came late to the "age" of sincere standards singing, but he made a really fine career out of it. I like those Kapp records. RIP.
  7. He really did have a lovely voice.
  8. Ah, Rose Discount Records on S. Wabash. Be still my heart......
  9. Oddly, or maybe not so oddly? this album isn't in Lord's discography. I was curious who played trombone on the instrumentals. It doesn't sound like Dick Shearer, but I guess it could be. On a somewhat different note, I'm still exploring the later recordings of this guy
  10. I don't think Mosaic has much access to that catalog. If they did, I'd want that massive Gene Ammons set first!
  11. The chapter titles do pique my interest. Might be worth a look!
  12. Been watching "Kaos" on Netflix. Jeff Goldblum is having a very good time in that one!
  13. Went to see "Lee" with Kate Winslett. Excellent film! Then I went to see "Megalopolis." Far less excellent. Some nice visuals, but I think the Daily Beast reviewer got it right when that writer called it a "big mess."
  14. This is very cool. Thanks for the heads-up!
  15. Oh Lord, *I* had that 45 too!!
  16. A valuable record of a great, largely unremembered band. Fred Beckett was a great trombonist! I'm listening to a classic from the golden age of Columbia Legacy reissues
  17. Makes perfect sense Steve. I was being a bit of a smart ass. Actually, the walls in my music room are largely covered in posters from various concerts I've had the luck to attend!
  18. A friend gave me an LP of Sinatra's "Only the Lonely" a few years ago, and since it's my favorite Sinatra album (and I have it several times over on cd), I framed that one and put it on the wall, but it's the only one. I keep my LPs on shelves in case I want to, you know, play them.......
