  1. Not necessarily, if the latest news can be believed! gregmo
  2. We still have time to make the list. Don't either of you leave. We'd miss ya! gregmo
  3. The shoulder shrug at the end is interesting! I don't think Sinatra thought much of the song--I didn't think much of it either--but it is cool to see the band! gregmo
  4. I put a message on his guestbook. Gotta love C.T.! gregmo
  5. Benny Carter, "The Music Master" Proper box, disc 3. I like it. Sound is good, and I haven't heard a lot of these things before. gregmo
  6. Thanks for posting this Mark. The last true collection of un-mined Sinatra is the series TV stuff. This catches him in the classic Capitol period on a great song. gregmo
  7. As I've read through the tributes on this thread, I've been struck again--as I have listening to him over the years--by the amazing variety of musicians with whom he played--every style, type, and sort. And he enhanced them all. What an extraordinarily open-minded musician he was. RIP. gregmo
  8. No restaurants? Too bad. I love eating rijsttafel (Indonesian rice with a zillion toppings) when I'm in Amsterdam. That and some Heineken makes for a very fulfilling evening, food-wise! gregmo
  9. Now Marcel, such cynicism! But, I think in this case, Loren really does want to get the music released. He's a true jazz guy. gregmo
  10. I don't think the BG estate is the only one holding it all up. Schoenberg was citing it as one of the more egregious examples. But I certainly agree that getting any of it would be great. Pretty sure Mosaic is already on board. gregmo
  11. Thanks Romualdo! gregmo
  12. The cds in the 9-cd box were fairly basic, with single-fold covers just listing tracks, dates, and personnel (no liners). There was a very small supplemental booklet that came with it with an essay on Bechet's life by Jean-Pierre Jackson, but with little on the specific sessions. I don't have them scanned, but here are the titles in order with dates covered in parentheses (apologies to my French friends for leaving off the accents!): 1: Bechet Creole Blues (1949-50) 2: In the Groove (1950-51) 3: Petite Fleur (1951-52) 4: Embraceable You (1952) 5: Nuages (1952-54) 6: Un Ange Comme Ca (1954-56) 7: Passport to Paradise (1956) 8: Premier Bal (1957) 9: Souvenirs de la Nouvelle Orleans (1957-58) Volume 8 includes the two sessions with innovative French pianist, Martial Solal. gregmo
  13. Are the Pierce and Willie Smith sessions the only ones that weren't issued in the "Essential" cd series back in the early 90s? That series had 14 cds, and this box only has 11. Obviously, dropping the alternates makes tons of room, but I'm curious how much new there will be in this box for those of us that have the earlier ones. gregmo
  14. I was lucky enough to find that set at a rack-job at Charles Degaulle Airport, of all places. Go figure! gregmo
  15. Oregon has no sales tax, so no problem here...well, except that not having a damned sales tax screws up state finances and starves important programs! gregmo
  16. Always liked Morganstern, Blumenthal, and Schoenberg. Thought McDonough's notes on the recent Webb set were pretty good. And Larry and Chris, of course. As for Green, I remember really liking him when I was younger because I thought he was sort of profound. He got distinctly less so as I got older. And even though I appreciated his devotion to the music, I never had much time for Stanley Dance's liners. gregmo
  17. Well, this thread has certainly meandered rather far from Crouch's book, hasn't it?! I picked up a copy of Priestley's Chasin' the Bird and have been reading it. The interpretations are pretty solid, but unlike what I've read people say about Crouch's book, the problem with this one (for me) is that it seems too brief. Nice discography at the end, though! Is there a good cd source for the stuff Bird recorded that was eventually released on Roulette? gregmo
  18. I can relate, sadly. Lost my wife to colon cancer at age 43. The first year was tough, but it got better. I know that is weak solace, indeed, but, beyond telling you I am thinking of you and feeling for you and wishing you had not joined this particular club, it's about the best I can do. I am so very sorry. gregmo
  19. The two Max Bennett discs have some primo Carl Fontana on them. A real discovery for me. gregmo
  20. I was amazed during a recent trip to Kyoto to find a Tower Records store in business. I thought the chain had gone belly up world wide. Did my part--bought several cds there. I think I was partly just sentimental about getting hold of one of those yellow bags. The Japanese still seem to like record stores. I found several during the trip, much to the detriment of my wallet. gregmo
  21. By the way, I appreciate the moderators expanding this thread to include Crown. It coincided perfectly for me with that purchase of those P-Vine reissues! Selfishly, gregmo
  22. I was recently in Japan where I bought three Crown discs reissued by the Japanese label P-Vine. As is usually the case with Japanese reissues, these were true to the originals right down to the LP track lineup and cheap looking album covers both front and back. I got one by Woody Herman (The New Swingin' Herman Herd), one by Bob Brookmeyer (Bob Brookmeyer featuring John Williams and Red Mitchell), and one supposedly by Gerry Mulligan (The West Coast Jazz of Gerry Mulligan). Once I got home and was actually able to look them all up, I realized that the Herman was the only one that appeared to be more or less original to Crown. The Brookmeyer was a Pacific Jazz ripoff I already had on the Mosaic Select, and the Mulligan was almost entirely a Gerald Wiggins trio date with a couple of Mulligan things also taken from Pacific Jazz. The Wiggins is pleasant but hardly essential. Has P-Vine been discussed on the Board before? And has anyone else picked up some of these P-Vine Crown reissues? They've reissued both Coleman Hawkins records as well, though, as another poster indicated, Fresh Sound has combined both of those lps on one cd. No idea what the sound is like on those. gregmo
  23. Sorry Moose. You seemed so HAPPY there! :-) Thanks for the birthday greetings. Celebrated my 60th in Japan with a trip to disk union and a lot of sake.
  24. The Monk Bliue Note set for me too. gregmop
  25. Samurai Warrior armor exhibition at Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon. Very impressive collection of gorgeous armor. gregmo
