  1. I thought he did his best work in Hallmark specials, especially "The Promise" with James Woods. Also "Heartsounds" with Mary Tyler Moore. A really fine actor. gregmo
  2. McDonough gave it a nice review in this month's Down Beat. Should be five stars rather than just 4 1/2, but life can't always be perfect! gregmo
  3. A truly great, exciting player, and notable too for breaking the color barrier at great personal cost with the big bands of Krupa and Shaw in the 40s. gregmo
  4. Listening to "Doin' the Thing." Horace was a force of nature. RIP. gregmo
  5. "Hankenstein" would have made a great title for one of Hank's albums! gregmo
  6. I really enjoyed my visit to the Armstrong house last fall. Highly recommended! Wish I was closer so I could get Ricky to sign my book! gregmo
  7. Yeah, I should have remembered Shirley. She could sing so slow and sweet. gregmo
  8. Andy Bey, but Scott will be sorely missed! gregmo
  9. Have a great one, Bertrand! gregmo
  10. Mine finally arrived today. Spent a wonderful hour plus listening to disc 1, the Town Hall Concert. I had the 2-LP Black and White album, but this set now supplants it. What a great concert that was! For a Teagarden fan like me, it's a special pleasure. I'm with the others, Ricky, great job on the booklet and the set as a whole! gregmo
  11. You might want to hang on to the earliest stuff. Not sure "Okeh Ellington" will entirely replace them, and there's been some debate in other threads about the sound. gregmo
  12. I also vote for the Mosaic box, which, bizarrely, is STILL in print. I wonder what the story is on that?! But either way, it's foundational. gregmo
  13. Happy birthday, boss! gregmo
  14. How did the Freshmen and Crosby sets sell? I mean, didn't the two Duke 30s sets sell really well--even better? My guess is they found some material by Clooney they liked, just like the Crosby material. gregmo
  15. I have the Concords, but don't play them much. Her voice was faltering a bit on those. I'll wait and see on this particular Mosaic, though I'll probably get it eventually. I always do. gregmo
  16. Interesting! The Strayhorn box has quite a mishmash of recordings. Most appear to be live, save for the later European stuff. Good to see the Treasury Shows continuing. gregmo
  17. Happy belated birthday Chuck! gregmo
  18. This strikes me as an odd choice. Is anyone familiar with the material? gregmo
  19. I think Allen is right on here. I don't mind the title. It's tempting as an author to look only for the negatives, but there have been lots of positives here too. Ms. Pepper needs to chill. If you can't stand the heat..... gregmo
  20. ..and the best booklet. Paul Desmond was a VERY funny man! I've always wished he could have finished and published his autobiography, which he always claimed was titled "How Many Are There in the Quartet?" a quote from a security guard when they arrived at a gig and told him who they were. gregmo
  21. I just got the email. It went fast! Another of those Roulette sets, and a wonderful one too. If there were any others that I didn't have (I do), I'd sure get them asap! gregmo
  22. The Sarah set makes a perfect complement to the Mercury boxes put out back in the late 80s/early 90s. But Ubu is right--it definitely combines the great and the not so great. gregmo
  23. It is there, but it's hard to find. Click on artists, scroll to Louis Armstrong, click go, and you'll find it there. I've pre-ordered. Looking forward to this one! gregmo
  24. Superficially, and without doing any in-depth research, it looks to me like a ripoff of Mosaic's now out-of-print "Complete Blue Note Art Blakey 1960 Jazz Messengers" set with one cd missing. gregmo
  25. Have a great one! gregmo
