  1. The 2-disc Jazz in Paris set offers some very interesting music: http://www.amazon.com/Anthropology-Jazz-Paris-Anachronic-Band/dp/B001PU6SYG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415058736&sr=8-1&keywords=Anachronic+jazz+band Certainly an unusual band! gregmo
  2. Much love here too. I listened to the show regularly, and that marvelous laugh will be sorely missed. Didn't know about Tom's alzheimers. We really need to find a cure for that one. I ain't gettin' any younger. gregmo
  3. "Q" always posed a problem when I used to do A to Z shows by various artists on the radio (especially singers--Fitzgerald, Sinatra, Bennett, Vaughan). I'd end up playing "Quiet Nights" a lot and pretending not to notice its more important Brazilian title! ("V" was also tough--"Violets for Your Furs" and "Very Thought of You"--and I had to cheat with "X" using songs like "Exactly Like You"). gregmo
  4. Well, I'm a historian, so I would have bought it in a minute as a fascinating historical artifact. gregmo
  5. Yeah, well, even Ellington could make mistakes now and then, Chuck! gregmo
  6. I know I sound like a broken record on this one, but Jug just SO needs a box. And deserves it. But, unless Mosaic were to get its hands on the Prestige catalog, which seems unlikely, I think we'll see the Second Coming first. gregmo
  7. Careful. Heavy ones can be dangerous. The Evans rust box would slice off your toe and give you gangrene. gregmo
  8. I like your first three. The recent habit of adding alternates at the end of the disc appeals to me. I get bored listening to the same tune over and over. To yours I'd add: 5) Ease of extracting cds from packaging that does not damage them. 6) Detailed liner notes in the booklet by a knowledgeable expert who loves the music but also sees occasional weaknesses. Mosaic sets generally score well on all these. gregmo
  9. Allen seems to have the only dissenting voice since the samples were replaced. The drums sounded good to me. If you don't like it, you can always send it back. gregmo
  10. You better hurry. Hesitation can be fatal when Mosaics start "running low"! gregmo
  11. Hmmm. So are you a fan of the Phil Schaap-produced Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert reissue? I find that unlistenable. I think one can take out the crazy noise and still preserve the music. Davies and Kendall (and others) have done it with remarkable skill. gregmo
  12. Greg, what album is that on? GA, I have it on the Complete Riverside Sessions box. Don't know if it was ever issued on one of Monk's Riverside albums, since I don't have those. gregmo
  13. I'm with Lon (as usual). I've also preordered it. While the Bird stuff is always fun to hear, no matter how often I have it (the Spotlite LPs, the Stash set, the Savoy/Dial set), I'm particularly interested in the other non-Bird things. I'm also curious about the booklet, and I'm seldom disappointed in Mosaic's remastering. gregmo
  14. The two Parker pieces sound good. It will be interesting to compare them to the Savoy/Dial set issued a few years ago by Time Warner/Savoy. gregmo
  15. Lon mentioned these, and I second his recommendation. The Happy Birthday Duke! cds have the band in some good live recordings from 1953 and 1954: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=Ellington+Happy+Birthday+Duke!&rh=n%3A5174%2Ck%3AEllington+Happy+Birthday+Duke!&ajr=0 gregmo
  16. That's a good point. They certainly did that (finding gaps in my listening) with the recent Rosemary Clooney set! I was a doubter at first, but I really enjoyed it. I too am looking forward to the Dial set (and James P. Johnson as well!) gregmo
  17. Monk's 20+ minute workout on "Round Midnight" on Riverside, where he deconstructs and reconstructs the tune several times. Art Tatum's early version of Tiger Rag, where he does the same thing in 2 minutes flat. Bill Evans on "I Do It for Your Love," Affinity with Toots Thielemans Count Basie and Oscar Peterson both on "Jumpin' at the Woodside" on their first Satch and Josh album, Pablo. gregmo
  18. That helps quite a bit! Thanks for figuring that out for me--what a mishmash this record is! I sort of enjoy it anyway, so I think I'll hang on to it, but what a mess! Thanks again! gregmo
  19. Many thanks for posting this, romualdo! I'm pretty sure most of the Blue Star material has been reissued on the Verve Gitanes Jazz in Paris series, hasn't it? And Vogue reissued the Bechet material a few years ago. My guess is that Mosaic would stick to stuff that Dial actually recorded rather than material it licensed from other labels, and given the fact that the Parker things have been reissued several times, I wonder if those would be included? Still, there are some interesting things in there! gregmo
  20. Re: James P. Johnson, Scott once told me (not *that* long ago) that Mosaic can't combine material licensed by Universal (Decca) with stuff from Sony (RCA/Columbia). I'm pretty sure that was in response to my bugging him for a 60s Hodges Verve set and suggesting he could combine them with the Hodges/Davis RCA sessions. One or the other of those companies won't allow it (I think it was Universal--memory fails), so I don't think they'd be able to put out both the Deccas and Columbias in one set. gregmo
  21. The James P. Johnson set sounds intriguing. I wonder what that would include? Maybe the stuff reissued by Smithsonian Folkways (Asch) and the old Decca GRP set?? What else? "Enquiring" minds want to know! gregmo
  22. Thanks Stompy. I think you're right, and in fact, I think there are a couple of things from the "Hawk Eyes" album on this one, but the other stuff still has me stumped! gregmo
  23. Listening to disc 6 of the new Billy Strayhorn box, "Out of the Shadows," on Storyville. Some very nice Ken Peplowski. gregmo
  24. Thanks for the heads-up on this one. It had somehow slipped under my radar. Used copy is on the way! gregmo
  25. A rather bizarre treasure I found in a cut-out bin (for $1.95 each, no less) were 5 cds on Laserlight called "Happy Birthday Duke: The Birthday Sessions" from the Bethlehem period (ca. 1953). Amazingly good stuff, and the sound was even good. Go figure! gregmo
