Happy birthday, Mr. Shatner! While I am a hopelessly committed Trekker, I still think his best work was with James Spader on "Boston Legal"!

Yes, I loved that one, especially the ending. I thought all the best pic noms were good this year...well, all I've seen. Haven't seen "Anatomy of a Fall" yet.

I love movies and go see a lot of them, so I always watch the Oscars. Of course, living on the west coast helps. I record it and then can fast forward through a lot of the glop. Robert Downey had a cool speech, Ryan Gosling did a good musical number, and Kimmel was ok.

Me too--and in about the same year and grade! Handed to me under a desk by a friend as if we were in a spy movie!

Hmmm. Wonder what they'd pay for all my Buddy Bolden cylinders........ and those Earl Hines early 40s airchecks with Bird and Diz....

This time, an Ellington cd at random, listening to Tricky Sam Nanton playing the plunger on "Johnny Come Lately"

I loved the performances in that one, but I found the film music often kind of irritating and off-putting. Which is odd, because I generally love film music!

Someone once wrote (maybe it was somewhere in this thread) that every time OP came up, we should respond with "42." He's sort of like fast food for me. Not necessarily that good for me, but pleasantly filling.

I really want to see that, but only if I have time to sit down to a good meal at a restaurant afterwards! -
Came home from a trip to find this one waiting for me. I didn't get it when I got hold of all the others a few months back, but I'm glad I finally filled that gap. There really was some great playing on these.

It's interesting to see this. I recently got that "Jazz Spectacular" album with Buck Clayton, J. J. Johnson, Kai Winding, and Budd Johnson, and was listening to it when I saw this thread. I think it's a fun album, and Laine's voice sounds as strong as usual. He often said it was his favorite album.
