Do you buy music faster than you listen to it?
Guy Berger replied to Bright Moments's topic in Miscellaneous Music
My backlog is "only" 24 CDs at this point... Guy -
A question about "The Pez Dispenser": when Elaine, Jerry and George go to talk to George's girlfriend after the piano recital, her dressing room has a photo/painting of a jazz bassist. You can only see the headstock and upper part of the neck, as well as the bassist's head. Can anyone give more details about this painting/photo -- I'm sure I've seen it elsewhere. Guy

I don't think I've ever heard of this band. Here's the GEPR summary. Guy

Which version of "Forest Flower" do you like best?
Guy Berger replied to Guy Berger's topic in Recommendations
I didn't include it because in the poll because it wasn't recorded in the 60s, but Lloyd's recording of this tune on Voice in the Night (late 90s) is really good -- I think it captures the good aspects of the original Chico version without the "cuteness" of the original. And unlike the late 60s versions, there isn't the "uninvolvement" that Jack W was talking about. No Keith/Ron/Jack locking into a tight groove though... Guy -
Genesis was released domestically on a subsidiary of Atlantic, I believe. Chris, why don't you call the record store and ask what they were playing? Guy

I was going to do the first Mahavishnu album, but Nate D suggested that to spur interest in the AOTW we pick controversial albums. Well, here's one. I don't think this is a great or even good album, but it IS interesting. (In fact, I think it's a lot more interesting than 8:30 or Night Passage.) I'll write more once we finish up with Una Mas, but looking forward to people's thoughts on this one. Guy

Anybody have any comments on the Cannonball? How does it compare to the Jazz Workshop Revisited date? Guy

I think when I joined netflix and went on a huge queue-building binge this happened. It hasn't happened since. Guy

Joe Johnson isn't going to play today. Tim Duncan might be on the bench as well... Guy

Very cool story, Marcello. That gig must have been incredible. It's great, but I actually think some of the October/November gigs are at an even higher level, if you can believe it. This band could go to 11. Guy

Should add another one to the list of gigs above -- a May or June 1969 recording from the Village Gate. Very good sound (much much better than the Duffy's Tavern recordings) though again the drums are a little loud in the mix. Setlist is "This", "Footprints", "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" and "'Round Midnight". Guy

Marc Cuban, apparently. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! ← I actually think Cuban made the right decision, given what we knew at the time... It turned out to be unlucky. Guy

Here's a pretty good argument from ESPN's Sports Guy for why Reggie was not a "superstar".

I know what you're getting at... for some reason it rubs me the wrong way, a little too "cute" if you know what I mean. Though obviously this has more to do with my prejudices as a listener than anything wrong with the music itself. Guy -
I also find it hard to believe there are people who don't recognize the talent that Phil Hartman had. ← I think Hartman's a cut above all of these guys. His Bill Clinton was brilliant, better than Daryl Hammond's IMHO. As far as Spade, somebody must like him out there with all the movies and tv shows. I just hope I don't know any of them. Guy

Haven't heard the 1964 version, but had to include it for completeness. Anyway, I have to go with 1968 because it has such a strong groove and Keith gets into that gospel thing during "Sunset". Charles plays best on the 1963 version, but I really don't like how the Hamilton group approaches the tune. Guy

I totally forgot that was him. I'm very... badly... burned. Guy

...and we have overtime. Guy p.s. I haven't watched a Walton-commentated game in a long time. How can one man spew so much nonsense so productively? p.p.s. Alright who still thinks Nash shouldn't have been the MVP?

After seeing that show I found myself completely re-evaluating Led Zep. I never really liked them after their 2nd album. But now after all these years, I'm giving them another chance and ordered the "How The West Was Won" and "Physical Graffiti" albums. ← The first half of PG is really good, the second half sucks. I think Houses of the Holy is much better. Guy

About 325 board members younger, if the stats to my left are correct. Guy

I'm starting up this corner because I went to see "Hitchhiker's Guide" last weekend with my brother and while we were waiting we sat through 15 minutes of the "Kicking & Screaming". The rest of the movie is probably terrible but Ferrell is hilarious... that sequence with the "father-son" talk had me rolling. "What are you doing on that computer son... online dating?" It was enough for me to put Anchorman at the top of my Netflix queue. Guy

Shouldn't this be in the Emperor Palpatine thread? Guy

I regret not picking up the Andrew Hill and Larry Young Mosaics when they were in print, though I guess now that the material is slowly leaking back in print as individual CDs my choice may turn out to be a wise one. Give me individual releases over Mosaics any day. Guy

Nice choice. Maybe someone can convince me to change my belief that despite the incredible personnel, this album is more or less interchangeable with lots of solid BN dates from around the same time. Guy

I think I read somewhere that Tarantino directed the section w/Benicio del Toro. I more or less agree with Ray and Lon about this. (Though I haven't read the comic book.) They really brought the universe to life. Not a GREAT movie, but worth seeing. Not sure if I'd go so far as calling it a work of art. Guy
